cooling performance doesnt matter i wont put something like that in my case. also it doesnt look it is easily mountable
When i'm being paid i always do my job through.
That thing is obviously designed for passive operation, and might even get the folks at SPCR excited, they'll definitely be more excited than the OC crowd here at XS...
The should call it Medusa imho, but Chaos also fits nicely^^
Might be interesting still, fanless heatsink for i7 relying only on case airflow?!

I'm not surprised about that first one, it's basically the same idea as the Spitfire, which seems to have great cooling performance even with little or no direct air flow.
It's not single slot, and it's not new.

I wouldn't say that they stopped trying, I think they're on to something with many small heatsinks in the first pics, Spitfire showed that this design is very efficient.
But yeah the first one must be a prototype, the base looks horrible.
I don't see any prices so I don't know where you got that from?
My first thoughts on seeing the first pic was "That's got to be the ugliest thing I've ever seen".. BUT it might be effective with all that surface area..

dont confuse efficient with horribly expensive. i remember the heatsink swiftech made that was a bunch of aluminum pins scattered in pattern that made it look "fluffy". this one with each tower having to be put together must take alot more time and effort than just a big tower with twice the surface area
o and how does air go through the fins, they are facing sideways, so is this expected to work only for towers that have the motherboard on its side, and a powerful top exhaust fan?

I'm more interested in the giant 'orb'-like cooler. Look at the size and depth of that radial fan! Certainly an intereting take on the cylindrical heatsink concept.
Look closer, there is a giant radial fan that appears to run *the depth* (edit: on closer inspection more like 1/2 to 2/3 of the depth. You can see where the fan ends in the picture from the underside) of the heatsink. It looks like it would push a lot of air, and the radial nature means all of that air could moved can potentially carry A LOT of heat away. A delta probably wouldn't improve upon that monster that is in there now.
if that fan does run 1/2 of the depth, maybe it's possible to get a 2nd fan in there so that you're pushing air throughout the entire depth of the heatsink. That could be pretty awesome.
