Seriously, getting sick of checking this thread for updates just to find more useless bickering.
Keeping the CPU cool, it is not the biggest challenge. You can always use some big-fat-noisy fan and get it done. But getting it cool&quiet on air is a bigger and more interesting challenge.

I would like to see some benchies with the original fans and with other more powerful fans. Also it is why we have fan controllers. You can turn them down and turn them up at your leisure and it is the reason why I like higher powered fans.
Not my purpose to "help him derail a thread". I'm simply saying you shouldn't criticize a product (the Noctua fans) for something that they weren't really meant to do - like very high CFM output.
In their range of operation re CFM vs. noise, they do a fine job based on my experience. IOW, stick to the intended purpose, not what you wish they would do.

Yeah, but there is a fine balance there. I personally have been playing with several fan-options lately, including a "higher powered" 38mm Scythe Ultra Kaze (2000 RPM).
I used it on a Prolimatech Megahalems, connected to my DFI's own fan-control (a good one with both auto and WS control). That fat-thingy was making too much noise (even on reduced speed) without effecting the temperature as much (at least compared to my 2xScythe Slipstream 1600RPM push/pull which I'm using now).

Try the Gentle Typhoons too. They are great fans in themselves for performance and silence. I do not use them myself well because I am half deaf anyway so I don't even hear my San Ace fans at 2500 rpm. I definitely hear them though at 6000 RPM.![]()
I wonder why there is such a problem getting the 1800 rpm models? Seriously if I was a company and had an item that sold like hot cakes I would make sure that production like would get priority. It's weird. But oh well to each their own and how they run their business I guess.![]()

i think its interesting to see how well this does on its own fans, and other fans of similar speeds. heatsinks are not simply the "best" in all cases. if we see one with very tightly packed fans, and needed a super high pressure fan to move any air, it could just be designed to cool an i7 in a small space with a little noise. while others could have open fins and designed for medium wattage cpus cooled with dead silent fans.
id like to see more HS/F combos built to work well together, rather than "another" tower cooler that looks like the rest
"Litle" NH-D14 in the house. We will start extensive testing against IFX-14 and Triton 88 (which have similar design), and of course Megahalems. This time it will take a while, since we will be trying to test it as thoroughly as possible. The first contact is promising if you ask me

I have great success with the ENERMAX MAGMA 120mm fan. It has good cfm and very silent. 69cfm and 18db at 1560rpm There isnt any bearings on this fan.
For some reason I hear people talk crap about these fans, I dont know why though.I have 3 of them in my case and 1 on my megahalem. They are the quietest fans I have heard, I have them run full blast at all times and my refrigerator runs way louder than them. I think people try to use them as a intake fan without a controller and complain that there too loud. Any fan that is intake will almost always make alot more noise because of turbulence, the rpms are more important when using a intake fan. It is really nice that the fan blades are detachable on the fan, it is really handy cleaning the heatsink.
it will be curious to know what the HS performs like with 2 / 3 fans or even fanless
You can run a Intel Core i7 920 @ 1,2V @ 1,25V QPI semi-passiv without problems. Hottest core became only 71°.
Also it performs very good with two fans, far better than with one fan.
