this is my current rig:
GA-MA790XT-UD4P with latest bios from site (F5)
sapphire 4890 vapor-x
4 gb dd3-ram (kingston value) rated @ 1333mhz
X4 945 (3ghz, not BE so locked multi of 15)
corsair hx650 power supply
i have been out of the oc-realm for a while and have read up on it yesterday and i know the basics of phenom II oc'ing; last night i started with 3600mhz (stock 3000) and it ran stable for 8h (prime95 with 4 cores running) which is not bad as a start
these were the settings i used / changed from stock settings:
15x240 = 3600
9x NB = 2250
9x HT = 2250
PCIE = 100
memory at 3/8 (so running just a little below spec @ 1280)
ram @ 7-7-7-20-27-2T (auto)
NB voltage = +0,1 (1,2 total)
SB voltage = unchanged
CPU NB VID = +0,075 (1,2750) (not quite sure what this does though)
CPU voltage = +0,150 (1,4)
cpu temp in de gigabyte monitor were around 53° (case 42°) at full load
idle temps = 39 / 43
any remarks or advice? I want to get good overall and stable performance (not that into benchmarking), especially for gaming. How can i push this a little higher ? What settings are too high / low or don't really matter. I'm ultimately aiming at 4ghz if possible but will sacrifice some mhz for absolute stability and silence :-)
It's now running at all the same settings as above but with 15x250 = 3750 but according to my gf, it has stopped rather quickly ... see below for screenshot of those settings (when still at idle)
also, with this setup (3600mhz and 4890 running just a little above stock) i get around 18k 3Dmark06, does that sound about right?

Make sure your RAM timings are running at the OEM specs. And bump CPU NB VID and Vcore a bit - should stabilize things. I'm thinking +0.100V for NB and +0.250V for CPU.

haven't really paid much attention to the ram (was running auto) but i now only see the ram is running at 7-7-7-20 where specs are 9-9-9-24 (for 1333)
i'm guessing the performance difference between the two isn't that big and that the latter will be heaps more stable?
Also, the ram voltage is at 1,6 (on auto) so i'll lower that to 1.5 as well

Not especially. I'd just advise not jumping straight into high overclocks - work your way up slowly. Try finding your FSB max and at which points it will need more voltage to the NB chip (not the same as CPU NB). To do this, drop your CPU multi and RAM speed to below stock so that when you raise your FSB, neither of those two things will be responsible for causing instability. Isolate the one thing you're testing so that you know what's causing your system to crash.
Once you've got your FSB all figured out, then you can try messing with memory and CPU separately. When working on the memory, I'd advise trying to get the tightest timings you can as opposed to higher clock frequencies. Do this at your max CPU overclock.
thanks, you're absolutely right and that's also my normal approach, unfortunately right now, I haven't got much time to invest into this so i'm looking for a temporay quick and dirty overclock :-) , come september, i'll really venture into getting the best performance out of this baby; right now i'm already aiming for a 90% performance without "too much" of a hassle ;-)

Any idea what kind of problem they had with F6? Seemed to work well enough for the hour or so I had with it last night.

Yeah Gigabyte is cranking em out...
I just loaded the F7 for 790X-UD4P and it Rocks..
F6A/F6 it seemed slow in comparison especially response at loading apps ..at the same settings.
I decided to flash with my OC enabled so i was shure i flashed @ the Same speed as Older Bios .. F7 really speeded this chip up..Even with low NB @ 2400+ my Everest is faster now with just under 1195ram instead of 1200mhz.. 1066divider works a treat still too...
They are really tweaking these Bioses good for the New Chips,,it shows indeed..We just need Ram drive strenths ADDed and well be set.
Have you tried a Lower Ram divider and lowering your HT to 9x or 8x
If your chip is buggy in X4mode it usually wont like High HTT because of the IMC and 8gigs..
720's unlocked are hard to get up past the 3.7ghz barrier..Especially with lots of ram...Great cooling is a must with those..But think you have more left..Its just being Finicky

Ok , now I need to order more stuff for my reeftank..
I have to admit this is a very solid board. I have had VERY bad luck in the past with GB, mostly at the bios level and was hesitant to try another. I took out a perfectly stable M3a78 780g board to see if I could unlock my 4th core with the ud4p. Not only did this board unlock it, it's every bit as stable and possibly more. I think I've thrown every conceivable bios setting at this thing in the last week and after clearing CMOS, countless BSOD and no posts, it bounces right back good as new. Stability wise it reminds me of my never EVER die volt modded Abit Nf7-s.
The UD4p did get me a higher clock than the M3a78 but then I had the crippled bios (EM) version and only 1.45 vcore. I could do 3.6 there and 3.7 on the ud4p, the difference is not the board but vcore limit of the em.
What surprised me was how high I could get my ram on this board vs my Asus. I was at 833 5-5-5 on my m3a78-em, and this board does 940 with the exact same ram and settings and voltages. It was also interesting that I could do 800 at 4-4-4 but not 801 at 4-4-4 on either board, making me think GB is going for bandwidth not tight timings.
Anyway and after all that, I have to say I'm pleased and I think the reason I can't get past 3.7 is most likely a limitation of my CPU and ram and not this board. I didn't think I was going to say that when I bought the ud4p but the so far, it has been a very nice surprise.

all of this is 1h occt-stable and several hours prime-stable, cinebench-stable and 3dmark vantage stable so that seems good enough for me
if i'm looking for real-world gaming performance, what should i still try to change or increase? Also, do some voltages seem to high? Which ones can be lowered without hindering performance / stability too much (or which ones should i start playing with...)

Oh, and bladebel, i think the CPU NB VID raises the amount you can clock the NB, NB voltage is just the chip on the motherboard?
I'm just taking a wild guess. Hopefully chew* or someone will come to correct me...![]()

there is no 11x for the NB ;-) so upping the fsb and lowering the multi is my only way to get a higher NB-speed
i'm fiddling with other settings (eg 14x268=also 3750 and 10x NB=2680) but can't get it stable yet... maybe i'll need the 1.3 v on NB ? i'm putting HT at 9x
yeah, i like to make things a bit more difficult ;-)
also if i push my NB and/or cpu too high (still have to figure out which), one of the 4 cores craps out in prime95 after a few seconds while the rest seems to be going on ... is this normal ?
yes, i thought it was always core 4 that failed on me, i'll try the ACC-thingy...
anyway, i'm still pretty happy with my 3 --> 3.75 ghz overclock (not as good as the E6600 running at 3600mhz percentage-wise though :-))
