Havok isn't "open" at all. It's just as proprietary as anything else. And right now there's no public GPU implementation. For it to work on all GPUs out there it would have to be ported to OpenCL (which could very well be happening behind the scenes right now).

Havok is going to use OpenCL so any OpenCL compatible processor should be able to run it (including AMD and NVIDIA GPUs, and even CPUs...).

There are already demos of Havok running with OpenCL, like this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daZoX...layer_embedded

EDIT: Here's a little read about Havok and OpenCL: http://www.pcper.com/comments.php?nid=6954

I was looking forward to having a cheap Nvidia card as my CUDA accelerator alongside my ATI 4870 or 58xx series. Well Nvidia then if they want to do stupid stuff like this. They just lost a bit market opportunity because of their ego.

Either way, it's a stupid move by Nvidia. Almost seems like they want people to skip PhysX entirely, rather than at least buying 1 of their cards for it
I would've baught a ~$100 Nvidia card just for PhysX atleast, but I'll stick with ATI so I won't change to Nvidia just for PhysX.

Well, I've been holding onto this GTS 320 until evergreen comes out, and was going to use it for physx. Now I suppose I have little use for it. Nvidia isn't going to stop me from buying an evergreen based card when they come out, but now anytime in the future, if performance and value between their card and ATI's is at all similar, I'll go with ATI.

Are there older drivers that I could use to still get my old Nvidia card running physx until Nvidia gets their head out of their ass?

There is nothing wrong with closed standards, how its implemented is what's important.

This is pretty dumb, but I doubt it's an issue that'll come up very often for most people.

Well, I guess I can stop eying that 9800GT for some physx glory in my system.
Thanks Nvidia, you just made that buying decision easy AND saved me money! What a great company, making sure I don't waste money on something I really didn't need.

With 7 being the first OS that could successfully deal with 2 GPU drivers, this was an oppertunity for Nvidia to let some new potential customers play with PhysX.

With the PhysX lockout being engaged if the system even sniffs an ATI GPU in your system, Nvidia is going to miss the boat on this one...

They should have all but given PhysX away, and if you baught an official Nvidia GPU, it should be guaranteed to work. It shouldn't matter to them so much if you also opeted to run an ATI GPU too.

    Again, this is just sad.

I wanted more PhysX fans, not less. So should have Nvidia.

They could do the same thing even if PhysX was written in OpenCL. The standards discussion isn't relevant. Look at Batman, AA option is only available on Nvidia cards and that's just "standard" DirectX.

This is just typical Nvidia really.

You kind of have to wonder if they care even slightly about their image. Because as far as I've seen, for the last few years their image is of the uncaring soulless money machine.

Which is of course what every company really is, but most at least try to sugar coat it somewhat.

My Point was propriety in the wrong hands & how it is used & by whom.
I'm not anti propriety, it can be good or bad.
And i knew full well of NV intentions for its propriety standards based on there past records.

Not necessarily. The smart companies actually give a crap because in the long run a squeaky clean image makes far more money. That and not pissing off your loyal customers.

With what they have gotten away with in the past they seems to think they can get away with anything.

What past events are we talking about? Rebranding GPU's?

I have to wonder if this implementation is something that can be made permanent with your Win7 install? Or, is this implementation uninstalled each time you update drivers? It's important to know because if someone decides to use a Radeon card (from a nvidia card) and don't know were to delete the file(s) a there is no telling what kind of effect it will have on Radeon card. A complete format/OS reinstall maybe needed.

Yep & besides that & the re branding as you mentioned & the driver that forced lower quality when the bench mark of a particular AAA title game was run no matter the in-game or control panel settings & the patching out of DX10.1 on assassins creed.

Yes, as much as I like Nvidia GPU's, I can't defend any of thoes actions.

I do still think they make great GPU's, but don't think they always make the right moves as a company.
