I see thats the complete line-up, so no mATX?

Thats quite a lot of model to choose from. But fewer than Gigabyte's, with 9.

so the pro and the evo are the same pcb, only diference is one missing nic?

so of those 6 boards, there are 5 diferent designs...
LOL... isnt that a huge waste of r&d resources? 5 completely diferent pcb layouts?and they all seem to have diferent pwms... so if one of the asus boards has a nice pwm, like the dlx, the evos pwm could be bugged or suck for some reason...

and no usb3 and no SATA 6gb/s which asus was yelling about standing on a soap box just a few weeks ago :P

the boards look not bad, i gotta say... but i wish the heatsinks would be more functional and focussed on actually cooling the hw and not on trying to make a dirt cheap heatsink that looks "ok" ... the sb heatsink on the rog board is good for that matter actually, but the pwm heatsink is almost a flat piece of alu :P

im curious about the usb extension on the ROG board that lets you control the volts and settings through a laptop or another pc, that sounds very promising!

EDIT: does anybody else thing the DLX sb heatsink is the worst of all of them?
seriously, even the LE and vanilla heatsinks look better and are probably cooling a lot better cause they dont have a piece of plastic bolted on top of the heatsink...

The D version without false 3rd PCI-Ex looks good, could be better with angled sata...already took my decision:UD4 or GD65
Is there only a sata port difference between the pro and the evo?

I do like the Maximus III Formula, nice design and good colours.

One thing is bugging me though; why are the SB heatsinks so big? Are they covering more than just the SB (e.g. vregs or something)?

possibly... but most likely they are big to hide that the pcb is mostly empty
it makes the boards look less cheap... on that i agree... though you can do much better than just slapping a big square piece of metal on there

So far I've only been able to play with the Evo. Working on getting 4GHz stable on a 750. I like the board and can't really see a compelling reason to step up to a Deluxe or Maximus, all they really add is toys.

    I don't think it's worth upgrading to another board that doesn't have sata3 & usb3.

Is the Plug in Soundcard on the Maximus actually any good?

If it isn't that much better than the integrated onboard soundcards on the other boards, it seems like a terrible waste.

Nice looking boards there. Personally I like the darker look for the M3E even thought he black and blue color schemes are very nice.

yeah... good point... nowadays even entry level boards offer bios features and voltages we used to have to buy a premium board for before...

i do like the usb connected external tweak thing, but yeah, its more of a toy than really useful... only useful if you bench and oc a lot and want to push things the extra 5% or so...

Quote Originally Posted by OBR View Post

true... it would still be some feature that would make it possible for people to justify buying the highend version though... at least something, even if its useless for the next 6 months or 1 year

idk, some raid chip or better nic or something else... there should be something on the highend boards that is missing on the entry level and mainstream boards that really adds a useful 24/7 feature imo... even better fanspeed control would be a useful feature that would make it worth it to buy a more expensive board than a cheaper one for some people!

atm what you pay extra between most of those boards is for what?
    1 more nic
    1 more sata
    1 more pci
    2 more usb...

thats not really that motivating for most people i think...
not a good way to diferentiate the boards...

on the premium boards you get
    better bios
    better pwm
    remote toy
    better sound

    whats missing imo is:
    more sata
    better raid
    better nic
pciE switch (to allow sli+raid and xfire+raid or tri sli and tri xfire)

especially the last is what id expect for a 250-300$ board...

i dont know what chips this one uses... but previously asus used the same chip they use on their xonar soundcards iirc, and those are very good...
not the best soundcard you can get but close afaik
