Are there are any current aftermarket air coolers that will fit the 4890?
cheeers![]()
4870 and 4890 are really the same so what ever worked for the 4870 can work for the 4890, T-rad2 is probably the best one
how bout scythe musashi?
The musashi would work but its a bit weak only having 2 heatpipes and all... the t-rad or the xigmatek battleaxe are the ones to go with.
Dunno, the Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo is $44 at PCCG and the TRad2 is $79. No idea about other etailers but damn, cheap is cheap.
[Just don't forget the added hight of the AC solution, it is like 2 slots or something, making your gpu take up 3 slots.]
The stock red heatplate + an Accelero S1 + a couple of 120mm fans would be the cheapest route, if you have a reference HD4890. It doesn't look pretty but works. If you go with something else, just be sure to take card of those VRMs. They need a substantial heatsink on them (like the new Zalman or TR VRM heatsinks), with some proper airflow. Otherwise you're just asking for trouble.
stick with stock cooling the core doesn't care about your heatsink...
your ram/VRM will suffer though
Yeah, the stock blower heatsink setup does work fine when tuned to the right duty cycle. But it's the damn noise it makes in some cases that is the problem. But with the quieter aftermarket heatsinks, then you have all the heat pumping into your case.![]()
The Zalman VF1000 the best cooler I found for 4870/4890. Check out the picture below, I used a VF1000 and some Enzotech bmr-c1 sinks on Sapphire 4890 Vapor-X and it ran much cooler (10-15c) than the stock Vapor - x cooler. I was able to OC even higher 990/1180. VF1000 is very quiet and it's slim so it fits in 2 slots easily.

are you sure that's got the ability to effectively cool a 4890, especially as there doesn't seem to be a way to cool the vrm's (or blow air onto them if they are sinked).
personally i use a scythe musashi, but i replaced the fans with 100mm x 25mm versions (instead of the 100mm slimline), and also put a cut down Zalman ZM-RHS90 on the vrm's (doesn't nearly fit at full height).
having said all this, i'm sure there's a more effective and easier solution.

Thermalright cooler is decent, so is Arctic artic Cooler stuff... Just make sure your VRMs are sufficiently cooled, this is very important.
Zalman has got a VRM solution too. The ZM-RHS70 and it works well with their VF1000 GPU cooler.

I used the VF1000 with the backplate on my 8800 GTX. Great cooler. Everyone disses Zalman, but they have made some really nice stuff in the past. This is one of those things. I just wish it was cheaper. I have a couple 4850s that I like to change.
This is cheapest e-tailer I found to get them for just $40.49 http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=CA-VF1000L
