I think a lot more electricity would have been wasted on the SLOWWWWW transfer of 5800rpm or so (which WD does not want to disclose, trying to claim that it is truly variable "somewhere" between 5400 and 7200rpm), on the hard drive being in load (not idle) state for so long, and having to keep the rig powered on (wasting more electricity) during the "Green" transfers, and having to waste more of your "Green" time not burning much calories sitting in front of a file-transfer window.
Last time i checked the WD green had ~70mb/s avarage transfare rate (at least mine has :p), a Cuda 1TB 7200.12 has 80mb/s avarage... i dont call that a massive difference.
If you transfer 500GB is would be 13min more on the Green, but only if your backup disk is capale of that transfere rate.

And since most powple use external USB2 .0 disks for backup purposes they are limited to 40Mb/s anyway.

Evergreen just sounds awful, period, and I hope the nickname does not have any literal meaning to it.
Evergreen is actually a tree/plant type and the other names are all trees which belong to this tree type. The other known names so far are Cypress and Juniper. Cypress is what we would have considered to be RV870 and Juniper is something like RV840, although that's all a guess.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evergreen
I like this quote from Wikipedia though:
    Idiomatic use

Owing to the botanical meaning, the idiomatic term "evergreen" refers to something that perpetually renews itself, or otherwise remains steady and constant (it does not suddenly halt or "die off", as leaves on a deciduous tree). An evergreen market, for example, is one where there is a constant, renewed demand for an item or items, as opposed to a market which is expected to saturate eventually.

Let's not forget that the original demo videos had a "Broadway" codename in the top left hand corner.

So something screwy is definitely going on.

I initially thought that had to be a specific board design, although I have my doubts about that. Broadway is not related to trees though....

I do agree that it actually is a very good motherboard, it's a bit old and there are no worthy CPUs available for the platform. With the Bad Stuff I mainly meant the parts that need to be replaced in my point of view.

the x2 3800 is a great cpu for its age

    perfect for a HTPC

call it old stuff but bad stuff is an insult for this type of hardware

it's still faster than 95% of all other pcs out there

nvidia went for the wrong route with their huge monster chips and will pay for it sooner or later
Ahhh, didn't think about that. I was thinking that since a 180mm^2 40nm chip would hardly be any faster than the 4890, Nvidia shouldnt have too much to worry about. Yeah, Nvidia will have to be pushed into 2nd place for a few months, which is so hard for Nvidia to bear. Heck, the almighty Intel was pushed into 2nd place for a while against the new Athlon X2's, and Intel lived.

LOL, true.. which is why I'd never ever use USB2.0 for hard drives!!! I have an external Blu-ray player and it's almost too fast for USB2.0! LOL..

Thanks for the encyclopedia glance! What a strange code name for a fast GPU. Maybe ATI is just so proud of its 40nm power-saving features that ATI wants to call it something green or plant-related! The 4770 is rather impressive, consuming only 30w at idle and 55w at full load, and it's faster than a 9800GT that eats nearly twice as much power.

    Not gamers.

There the crossover from singel to dualcore has already happend, even quadcores have a nice adoption rate.

For gamers it seems like dual core adoption rate have slowed:

yeah because they now go for quads, why go for duals when you can go from single core to quadcore.

If the trend keeps going, at the end of the year, there will be more quadcores then single cores.

For me it seems like the quad cores are eating into the dual, not single.

I am not seeing what you are seeing:
Dual core CPUs from Valve's stat survey grow from 52.07% (Jan) to 56.70% (May) which is a 4.63% increase

Quad core CPUs from Valve stat survey grew from 11.58% (Jan) to 16.06% (May) which is a 4.48% increase

Single core CPUs decreased by 8.79% during the same time frame. Which tells me that:
    A. Dual core adaption rate has not slowed
    B. Both dual and quad core CPUs are eating into single core segment according to the data.

    "Back at the ranch"
I am beginning to wonder if we will see a summer release of the their next gen video card. That's one way to get a jump on the market. Time will tell.

Interesting, only 1 PCI-E power connector was being used, it seems.

And the heatsink looks like a spread-out fin heatpipe one similar to Zalman VF-900, probably with a regular 80mm fan in the middle, but with a shroud covering the card. If it's anything like Zerotherm Hurricane, I'd be happy because I think this cooler is so cool!

AMD has said it before, with their GPU-line they don't focus on the high-end market and to totally crush Nvidia with raw performance.

They will still be focusing 100% on price/performance, and will continue with it's plan to use multi-GPU for high-end segments with small chips.

And for all we know that Wafer that shows 180mm^2 chips might just be the Juniper "RV840" and not Cypress. In my book it looks as if AMD is going for lower specced GPUs hardwarewise and instead will focus on higher clock-frequencies and perhaps 1GHz GPUs will be normal when the Evergreen Family arrives?

Just an idea of mine, just look at what AMD did with RV770 when they made RV790...

I'm personally more for AMDs current approach myself. Now if they can sort out their drivers (mainly catalyst control center and its blatent suckage factor and the lack of profiles for games ) and actually use a heatsink thats not made for 12 cents, I'd be happy as hell.

I am looking forwards to the HD 5800s myself more so than GT300 oddly enough. Hopefully AMD don't let us down.

They call it "RV870" so maybe it's just to not confuse readers. And that Evergreen or whatever the codename is will be released in October was not exactly new information...

Where have you seen this information before? I never saw it in any threads... shame it's that far away, I was really hoping for a September launch.

Yeah, kinda dissappointed also if this baby would be released in October timeframe, that's already Q4 09. It might miss the biggest computer expo in my country, the usual time for me to make big upgrade out of my gaming system. But i think this can be blamed solely on TSMC borked 40 nm process.
