Id assume its more to try to block third parties from selling "quad core" systems at almost quad core prices, but only paying AMD for the cheep locked dual core. But then again if their doing that they probably dont care if they sell them with the newest bios and its various fixes.

Yeah it's actually good PR for both Gigabyte and AMD.

if amd really wanted this to stop they would (and can) force their partners to use this.

but why would they? they sell a dual core cpu at the price of a dual core, they get rid of their broken inventory, they get marketing value, their sales numbers increase
they do lose some people buying unlocked cpu instead of quad core, i doubt that's a lot of people

agree majority of people doesn't know what BIOS is,a and how to get in to BIOS... and unlocking is nuclear science for 95% of people

Personally I am with AMD on this one and agree that the disabled cores should not be tampered with .

This is old news, Gigabyte has had dual microcode selectable in BIOS for quite some time already (on MA770T-UD3P and other AM3 motherbords).

Does this board unlock cores?

There was an article on unlocking the 720 in PCFormat so a significant proportion of the UK gaming & enthusiast market now knows about this. I expect other UK PC magazines to follow it up as well.

It doesnt make a lick of sense for AMD to do this. I can guarentee that the only people who buy the cheaper AMD CPU's cant afford the quads. If you have the money you buy a 955 be, especially with the top of the line chip being a mere $245

I agree with you, but clearly, by them releasing the micro code to block it, they don't want people to be doing this for one reason or another.

Maybe they want people to remember about the unlocking, all websites have this news up again.
