I'm testing a system with a 955BE on this board with 2x2GB GSkill PI 6400, aiming for ~3.8GHz with 225x17 for 900MHz on the ram (PI 6400 usually does 900-1000MHz) on this board, in short I'm struggling with it. I've tried CPU voltages voltages between 1.35 and 1.55, changed the RAM. Which BIOS would you recommend for this system (not sure which one it currently has)?
    Intel i7 920 C0 @ 3.67GHz
    ASUS 6T Deluxe
    Powercolor 7970 @ 1050/1475
    12GB GSkill Ripjaws
    Antec 850W TruePower Quattro

Is it normal for this board to not allow flashing back to an older bios?
Ive tried AFUDOS, EZFLASH and ASUS Update in windows, all give the error incompatible due to older version.

803 or the Beta 902 will work.

Keeping things simple ...Dial the ram first

Does that ram run as good as it can with 955 or is that what it did with your old chip?

If it can clock 1000mhz like below,

    800@HTTx250. = 1000mhz @ 6-6-6-15- (800ram divider)UNGANGED

should be easy doable @3800mhz with timing tweaked and or HT,, i suspect HT/NB/ram/timing problems are holding you back.

Evenn my 720 did not hit 4ghz right away with 1150 on the ram ,,because the HT and NB didnt get along at the Same speed. So i had to offset it by uping the HTT and Raising NB above Ht speed. 1240+ is what i max clocked the Ram before i even started with the CPU/NB.

ALWAYS See what your ram can do ,,then find the Max CPUxmulti .You might want to run whith STOCK volts and 800ram multi (timing loose). Once you get somewhat dialed in probally 3700+ with that chip... then you Start adding tinyVolts as you go higher( just a little ) 955 should do 4.0g's at close to stock volts with good Air.

Keep the HT and NB around 2000 untill you get things stable.

Also VDD @ 2.8v and ACC to Auto when Raising VCORE and NBvolts to find a somewhat max clock. I use ACC to help get things Maxed then dial it down a hair untill stable.

    What i run Volt wise(24/7)
Only thing i change is ACC if needed andVcore for CPU/NB or Ram volts. every thing else stays the same.

I have run 1200+mhz with the 720 @3900/2700nb on this Mobo Easy..PatriotViper can be very fussy too . @ 4'ghz 2200nb i run 1157mhz on the ram. I run my Ram very loose then tighten up things once i get my Max clocks i want to use.

    720 using X20cpu multi and 1066divider.
    803BIOS

720 using 18.5cpu multi 217 htt and 1066 ram divider for 1157mhz ram.
    902BIOS

    VOLTAGE USED on CHIPSETS 24/7
    (NO matter the CPU used)
CPUvcore and CPUNBvolts will vary Depending on what each CPU needs , Same goes for ACC.

ACC is the Same for my 720 as was the 9950 (+4). or Auto works fine for either chip. 955 shouldnt need it actually.

Last make shure you Disable Temp Monitor and VcoreVoltage. or youllg et boot warnings in all Bioses.

Use the AFUDOS ,, like below and at the end use( /pbnc ,,this will force flash)

Below is using a Floppy Drive letter

Dont forget to use( /i )before the BIOSromname.

Ahh yes. I dont really like to force a flash, I've been burnt before with that. But while this issue is highlighted , id just like to say that asusupdate needs a fix the options menu has check box to enable flashing old rom, but as mentioned comes up with an error.

i had the same issues with my m3a79-t and a 955...
it wasnīt even stable at stock clocks. prime would either give out erros within 5minutes or just bluescreen. no matter if i set the ram to 1066mhz or 800mhz or below. tested on the 803 and the 902beta bios.

did u try to prime it at stock clocks, or did u start right away with 3.8ghz?

Flashed 902 last night, same results....
Bios and AOD show the setting for the 4th core but it doesn't function at all.
Version 803 did unlock it, but would never run stable when stressed.

I just installed Win7....So far i have 9.4cat and the New Beta for Audigy working 100% @ 2.8ghz...

Gonna reboot and double check My VistaSoftware Install/ I did dual boot pain in the A..

Im using 902 Bios ,, Now time to Bunp up the clocks again but NOW 64bit Instead of 32bit

CATALYST version 0665 9.4 was BSOD my sytem @4ghz and 3.9ghz2600nb
64bit WIN7 gets me 100+ MHZ( lower Clocks)...I havnt even tried the NB yet. I believe it is Due to Catalyst9.4.

ATIDmag BSOD(darn Cat driver. The 64bit pushed the IMC a little to much@4ghz WIN7...

OC Win7,,64bit first stable Clocks ..Had ram way loose an stock NB...The Cat driver is wreckin everything above 3.88mhz

UPDATE on Catalyst driver ,, use the one dated 5-5-2009 WHQL Version 0662,, No more BSOD ATIDMAG @ 3900+

    Ok.9.4catalyst Version 0662

Im back @3900mhz2780nb again. Turn out the first Win7 driver for 64bit isnt to stable. So i installed the driver Dated 5-5-2009 over 9.4. Made Huge Differance in stability on Win764bit

    This Mobo just rocks..for DDR2 and SB750 ...
I didnt expect to get this high on Win7//64bit....For using a New OS RC at that and Beta Drivers i cant complain to much.

Sorry for the big SS, but this 720 is a killer chip for $140 and I wanted to make sure it was readable...

I really tried to push the memory this time and it did quite well! Almost 1200 Mhz on DDR2 with pretty tight timings...

Maybe I'm easily amused, but I was pushing the system REALLY hard...
Five pass IBT, listening to some tunes, surfing the net and checking E-mail with all the sidebar apps running at the same time...

Nice IMC/HtRef clocks too, and the V's are within reason with sweet temps...

I'm gonna put the 940 back on this rig this weekend, but the 902 bios has fixed alot of problems and I really don't think you could ask alot more from a $140 chip (720be)...

I was reading the Xtreme News secton tonight at work and reading alot of the hardcore Intel guys knocking AMD's PhII chips...

I just don't see them being inferior, they take a little more work to tune, but if you take the time they definetly hold their own...

I hear ya on that one.

These chips are fun to tweak. Once you know what they like , the numbers game dosnt do it justice.

Ive set many Intels for friends and when they sit at my PC ,, there like yours is fast.

I laugh and say," But your Intels @ 4.6g's and im only @ 3.6g's with da Old 9950".
Its funny ,, the price is like that too

    Hi,
i am just trying since two days to find a stable setup (on vista64 ultimate) to run i.e. super pi 8m & 16m without errors using the 902 bios with Mushkin DIMM Kit Black Ascent XP2-8500 4GB PC2-8500U CL5-5-5-15 (DDR2-1066) and a 955.
tryed multiplicators from 13x up to 19x,with different volts,ht & nb combinations and different ram timings.
any advise what could be wrong ?

I have a question for you folks....

I put the 940 back on the Asus today and I thought I'd push it a little harder since the new 902 bios is installed.

I'm running into a problem I haven't experienced in quite awhile. It starts with little sparkles (video corruption) on the Win7 load screen and sometimes during regular operation.

I've had this happen before and bumping up the HT voltage has ussually gotten rid of it although I've never had to go over 1.3v to fix the problem.

The bigger problem is LOUD OBNOXIOUS audio corruption! So bad that it scares the hell out of my cat (and me too)...

I've had the noise problem happen before as well, but I could never figure out a way to fix it other than just lowering the clocks.

Seems like these 2 things may be related, and could very well have something to do with the HTLink (or SB voltage). Does that make sense to anyone else?

I'm kind of a wimp when it comes to just throwing voltage at a problem unless I know I'm throwing it in the right place.

Does anyone have any idea what may cause these symptoms and what the solution may be? Or have I just reached the limits of what my system/chip can handle..

Heres an AOD SS of my current setting (with the 79-T ov actual core is 1.54):

Disable auto express in the bios, 117mhz on the Pcie is a little high IMO. I have noticed Video corruption when its running too high.
Try that, and see if the Video problems go away.

Thanks Raiderman, actually I don't have Auto Express enabled. It sets it at 124 and I did have some trouble with it in the past. It does seem to improve video performance to some extent so I manually set it to 117 and haven't had any problems with it since (with a slight bump on HT v's) ...

After alot of tweaking I actually did get things up to 19x207 (3933 core) and was pretty close to having it Wprime/IBT stable. That was at 1.575 Vcore and 1.35 Vimc.
    Then I smelled something burning...

Scared the crap out me! Turns out the ceiling fan on my Antec 900 case died, so I just went back to my known good settings....

I'm sure there is more in this 940, and the fan dying had nothing to do with my OC, but I'm kinda buzzed so I'm done for the night...

I'd still like to know if anyone has a fix for the Sparkle and audio corrution though...

As for the Video corruption and the PCI-E bieng 124........

    Try this ,,

    Set HT to 1.28v

Go into te PCI bios menue where you set the Lanes and PCI-E slots.

Press f4 to access Lane #2 and Lane #11 these are the 16x slots..

Set both to 200 and 16x and Autonogotiation.

When overclocking i can run 3870x2 @950mhz /4850 @800+mhz and /9800+55nm 800mhz+ /260-216-55nm 750+mhz with zero problems @ 290+htt.. The windos load crap happens when the CPU isnt Stable. Youll barely se the dots (when they get spinning bigger in Win7) then wham(reboot). 64bit will do this sooner than 32bit with Catalyst Driver before 5-5-2009. Use the one dated 5-5-2009 for best stability. Ive ran so many other cards for friends but those four have been in an out at least 60times haaaha. So i know all about what the 124 pci does. Its most likely not the coulprit .

STOCK PCI @100 = (in AOD ,Why 124, AOD why) PCI in BIOS i Keep @100 24/7. As for the sound..It sounds like you own a Creative Audigy or X-Fi pci... You need the Most recent driver That out. I have had that pop and High sqeel with frozen looping sound while gamming . The newest driver fixes the Vista borking. If it crashes with On board Audio get the Nwest ACL Realtek codec for what ever Os.

Had both of your problems before on this MOBO.

Press F4 to access Hidden menu when your in CHIPSET menu.

    Then choose PCI EXPRESS CONFIGURATION.

You should now see PORTS #02 - #12.

#02 and #11 are the 16x lanes or ports. The first option is to set AUTONonomous or Autonegotiation.

    Then set lanes to 16x

then I Set lane watts to 200(default is 75)..I do this no matter what card i Run ATI/Nvidia. This helps alot When overclocking or pushing a 3870/4870/4890 Set to at least 150watts if your gonna push the Cards and or the HTT.

Mine has been 200 from day one.

As for the L1 to L0..
Leave the L1 and L0 on auto. you never need to touch it.

I have a PCIE x4 ARC-1210 RAID controller, and a PCIE x1 TV Wonder 650. Will increasing the GPP wattage from 25w to 75w hurt anything? Also I made the change and switched my PCIE Ports #2 and #11 to 150w. I only have the first PCIe x16 slot populated with a 4870. Will I blow up my rig changing these settings LOL? They're new to me and this post got me curious as to what the advantages and disadvantages of raising these wattages are.

The watts for Raid and Sound cards PCI-E up to 4x should be keept @ 25watts . Thats all thas needed. For 8x 75watts - 200watts depending on Videocard. Most cards that pull 150watt plus under load will do best with 150-200watts. This will not hurt the Mobo ,it adds stability to allow the card to stay more stable under 100% load even @ stock or Overclocked.

Youll notice that when overclocking a videocard that the Higher lane watts allows the Card to achieve a higher Overall Overclock with out causeing the Driver to error.

Ive tested this with many cards and 3870/4870's @ 150- 200watts in the slot. Allows much higher OC on the Cards with better driver stability.

9800+/260/280/ and so forth like arond 150watts any Nvidia Dual GPU card 200watts will do.

When not overclocking or pushing the HTT/Southbridge 75watts is fine for the 8x and 16x slots. I have found that even with my 3870x2 that @ 75watts it maxes @ 880mhz both cores . When i run 150+Lane watts for the 16x lane I can Clock 945mhz both cores. The chip set and mobo seem to like this with power hungry cards.

If i was gonna hurt anything ,, would of toasted this M3A79-T long ago.
Trust me ive pushed every limit possiable

gOtVoltage: Just wanted to say thanks man!

I only have a 4850 in the main slot, so I just raised the voltage to 125w, but it did eliminate the sparkle problem....
