I don't even see the point of having SecuROM in the Steam version at all. What are they trying to accomplish? Steam requires a login so you can't share the game with ten of your friends. The Steam version doesn't have a CD so no CD-check can be performed. Unlimited installations are allowed so no need to keep track of that.

It's kinda ironic when companies are deliberately pissing off their customers for no reason whatsoever and then complain about people who pirate the game to get rid of all the DRM crap.

there are ways to crack steam , if it didnt then have securom it would be much easier to pirate it through steam than a retail version.

No need to resort to cracks/emulators/bypasses because I am willing to pay good money for well implemented software.

None of this DRM SecuRom ROOTKIT crap. Are you kidding me? I did not just fork over money to have this done.

Steam rocks. SecuRom is horrible. More companies should take note of that.

I think that this whole SecuRom is just pissing off legitimate computer-literate customers.

I'll be Happy to install steam because it's not INVASIVE.

The fact that I can uninstall Steam without DRAMA is a huge plus. I can go to my other computer and log in, and boom.

I'm playing TF2 on my other rig.

Having never played any GTA game, are they any good?

The only console games I was seriously hoping would end up on PC are Gears of War 2 and The Force Unleashed.

Its geting to the point where Valve is the only company that Im willing to buy a game from. Just instal Crysis and look at the changes made to your registry.

You should have this game already. You are denying yourself some pretty serious fun by not having it yet.

I'll end up buying this through steam. No disks to worry about messing up and no need to put a disk in the drive to play. Whats not to like?

With -some- games you can register your cd-key on Steam.

CD + Steam would be a win + win situation if it worked.

For those who are interested, there is a pre-order on Steam with Vice City for free.

Did you guys read the IGN interview (that n!Cola posted) at all?
    http://pc.ign.com/articles/934/934268p1.html
I see a lot of people that are probably planning to miss out on GTAIV simply because they read "SecuROM".

    ...

Will I need the disc in the drive at all times?

Rockstar: To launch and play the GTA IV retail version, you must have GTA IV Disc 1 in the drive. If you want to play without a disk in the drive, you should buy the digital version of the game.

Will the downloaded digital distribution version of the game come with any different type of DRM than the retail version?

Rockstar: All versions of the game will use SecuROM for Product Activation. Downloadable versions of the game will have additional code if the vendor requires it, such as Valve's Steam program.

    ...

I have several machines, including a large rig at home, in my office, and a laptop that I take on the road. Can I install the game on all of my machines at once, and if so, how many?

Rockstar: Yes. If you have the retail disc version you will just need to take the disc with you and you can play on an unlimited number of machines. For the digital download versions, each digital download vendor has its own policy on the number of installations that are allowed. Check the vendor's policy before you purchase.
So from what I understood from this is that:
    1) the number of reinstalls on the same PC, and
    2) the number of PCs that can use it
depend on the vendor, ONLY for the downloadable version.
Considering Steam is one of the vendors, I would not be surprised that their policy will be the same as Valve's games (unlimited installs on any PC, as long as you're logged in your account). So in other words, it's not really Rockstar's fault if it's not the CD/DVD version and your vendor restricts the number of installs.

IF Steam puts a limit on the number of installs for GTAIV, it's not the end of the world. You could still emulate the CD/DVD with a disk image emulator (like Daemon or Alcohol). As quoted above, you have unlimited reinstall and you can install on any PC, as long as you "have" the CD/DVD in the drive.

its not the limmit of installs its that securom 7.x (or anything above 4.6) allows for remote root access to your computer and is constantly doing things when u are idle and is running through hidden processes and drivers

would u purposely install AV200x or join a bot net, becouse if u install anything with securerom past 4.6 then thats what u are doing, and while its not like starforce that will flash your dvd drive and stick it permanent PIO mode with non printed disks or kill the drive out right, its still bad and a huge problem

then requiring win live login is another huge problem since that is glitchie and has its own spy ware built into it and when they use it exclusively for saving like GOW its just ridiculous, that is when i decided its not going to be a perches of mine ive looking foreword to this game for a long time and now i cant buy it if not out of principal becouse the retail wont work on my computer since live breaks things and if its like GOW i dont want to go through a day of arguing to return it. and i heard that the new POP is doing it also and i was looking forward to that one as well but i wont be buying it now, and that leaves kingdom hearts:CoM for the ps2 and new phone and no pc games (and thats disappointing)

with the required specs and securom i cant see this game selling since most people with comps that can run it wont be using anything with securom 7

Heres my thought process, its $29.99 used at GameStop for the Xbox 360, I can buy that and since its not a graphically intense title and not have to worry about having a worse experience than on PC. That way I wont screw my computer up either...

Damn, you have to have Windows Live account to play online?
That is woefully narrow minded. I have a mate and he has a PS3, we were hoping to be able to play online in GTA4.... I guess that will not be possible now?

I'll probably end up buying this, I just want to wait and see how the reviews turn out and if many people cry about bugs etc... I have bought all the other GTA games and loved them.

Why is everyone crying over SecuROM?

I've had games which are SecuROM protected for years, Crysis, F.E.A.R, Bioshock...etc no problems at all. SECUROM DOES NOT EQUATE TO STAR FORCE.

STAR FORCE IS THE AXIS OF EVIL!!!

SecuRom is only a tool for software developers to protect their copyrighted content.

If you don't like it then....use Steam as Steam rocks the socks off

I've been using Steam since 2004, although you must keep a careful eye out on Prices, FYI Left4Dead (good game by the way), is actually cheaper in the shops than through steam. (You only have to enter your CD-Key into Steam and then you do not need the Disc).

Perhaps Rockstar should have gone down that route as SecuROM with it's spinning Discs can be a bit annoying at times!

My experience on xbox360 was very unsatisfying. All the pop-up objects, stuttering and freezes just mess up the fun. And I was playing this on brand new falcon console which i got with gta4 on day of release...
I really hope PC version will be lot better and with the help of modding community graphics should be amazing.
