Where To Look For Imformation On Phase Change/cascades And Any Other Question

i am making this a sticky.

now anybody can put GOOD links in here

for information on how too build a system,

    on where to buy parts,

and any other question that is asked on a daily basis so new guys can find it fast..

still the search engine works great if it was used.

but maybe this will be easier.

As sais before, my website contains the progress description of my cascade.

Project 210K: R507 high stage, R410A low stage

Project 173K (using R507 high, R1150/ethylene low) will be started soon

What I consider to be the best first project for a phase change noob. Transform a window A/C into a chiller, then add a piercing valve and start learning (by reading and doing) about refrigeration.

    http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...threadid=22968

And here's a good starting place for learning refrigeration theory:

    http://www.refrigerationbasics.com

    Look for the "Samples" button.

And then if you're really serious:

    http://www.techmethod.com

Look for a book called "TECH Method Lesson Series: ACR Trouble Shooting".

Here is a PT chart for a variety of refrigerants:

    PT Chart

Also i think it would be a good idea if we list what cap tube sizes we use/recommend for the different refrigerants and setups.

I'll start. Im using propane with 180" of 0.031" cap tube on a direct die setup. Seems to work for me

Here is a quote from Gary on cap tubes:

You will need about 7 feet of .026 (.6mm), 10 feet of .028 (.7mm) or 16 feet of .031 (.8mm). A cap tube is stable between 5-16 feet, so .036 (.9mm) is not a good idea, and best would be in the center of the stable range. In other words, 10 feet of .028 would be best.

This is assuming about 150 watts of heat load and R404A/R507. A higher heat load needs less restrictive cap tube and vice versa. A lower pressure refrigerant also needs less restrictive cap tube, and vice versa. In order to get the right cap tube size, we need to know the heat load and the refrigerant, and to a lesser extent the compressor size.

Thanks for adding the extra info Gary, I got a bit excited and just pasted that stuff in there.

I'd like to add some links for refrigerant properties calculators:

    Forane

Nice and simple just give a temp or pressure, gives saturated values and superheat values. Gives enthalpies and a bunch of other stuff.
    Forane

    Coolpack Refrigeration Tools

Draws charts and does cycle calculations and has alot more refrigerants than Forane. looks nice too

I copied this from phase-change.com, I'm sure its here aswell somewhere but quicker to find over there. Its a quote from Gary(who else)

When I check out a system, I am monitoring a minimum of 8 temperatures, and sometimes as many as 12.

For those who may be interested, here is what is needed:

    Low side:

    CPU temp
    Evap temp
SST (saturated suction temp) or low side pressure (and type of refrigerant)
Suction line temp near compressor inlet

    High side:

    Condenser air in temp
    Condenser air out temp
SCT (saturated cond temp) or high side pressure (and type of refrigerant)
Liquid line temp near condenser outlet

It's not a one time deal. Each time you change something, the entire list needs to be reported again.

That's what it takes to do it right.

And if you haven't insulated yet, don't bother. The system should not even be started until it is insulated.
Thought it might be worth stickying this info, as I know I am always looking for it.

I found some pressure/temp charts for some of the refrigerants we are using that go down to -150F/-140F.

    R134A

    R404A (aka Suva HP62)

    R410A

    R507
