    2x 4870 watercooled: 31.2k 3d06 done with cascade

After a disappointing session last Friday with 2x 4850 we (Hoschi and me from BenchBrothers) had another try last evening. This time we changed nearly the whole setup: motherboard, cpu, psu and graphic cards. We took 2x 4870 from PowerColor. The cards were watercooled (only gpu) and vgpu-modded. Unfortunately they didnīt switch voltage into 3d-mode and so we had to deal with that.

    Our setup:

    • qx9650 @ 1.82 volt
    • ultramarine blau cascade built by piotres (-100 degrees)
    • ASUS Maximus Extreme (unmodded)
    • 2x 1024 mb Cellshock pc14400 es (thanks to saaya )
    • 2x hd 4870 by PowerColor (watercooled gpu, 1.28x volt)
    • OCZ EliteXStream 1000

OCZ sent us a new psu for our benching-rig which had the first use yesterday. Thank you guys for sending this psu – it did a very good job.

By the way: Every picture and screenshot can be clicked to open a larger version.

    Preparing the motherboard:

    Setup-pic:

During our initial testings with watercooled cpu we got 25.7k 3d06 with just 4.4 ghz. Raising clockspeed by another 1 ghz+ we should get a respectable performance boost, shouldnīt we? And yes, we got it:

    3DMark06

Benching without ln2 is kinda boring….

    And our final score:

    compare-url

After our initial testings during this week we wanted to reach 30k. But that barrier we smashed with our first run at safe 5.4 ghz (30.3k). After raising clockspeed to 5.6 ghz (keep in mind: 1.82 volts and only cascade-cooled!!) we got another ~900 points. This should be one of the fastest 2-gpu-scores on the orb.

Cheers (Hoschi on the right side and guess what - me on the left side ):

And guess what: This cpu isnīt maxed out yet. Because we could benchmark all other benchmarks at much higher clocks:

    3DMark05

    compare-url

2k5 at 5.7 ghz isnīt to shabby. And what about 2k3 at this clock?

    3DMark03

    compare-url

112k with 2 watercooled gpus – not too bad. Peak in gt1 was 6,910 fps.

    3DMark01

2k1 was a "must have". Lod +3 and no special benching order gave us this score. After another run of car low we got 107,280 points. Unfortunately our rig crashed after this run so that we couldnīt capture a screenshot. But here is the orb-link:

    compare-url

And what do you say about am3 at 5.85 ghz?

    Aquamark

Performance is poor at this clock. Something eats up performance and we donīt know what it is. In our opinion the score should be 5k to 10k higher at this speed. But today we donīt care about – we are happy that we could complete that benchmark at 5.85 ghz with 1.82 volt.

Thatīs all for now. Maybe we can run singlecard-benchmarks today. And if we have enough time we will put the cards under mach2-units. With this cooling and about 5.650 mhz cpu-clock we should be able to break into the 32k-zone.

    Thanks for reading.

Impressive! Those GPUs are just crying out for a little more voltage, 950MHz should be easily do-able on water

Congratulations guys, absolutely amazing scores ! Especially 06 and 05 are sick !
What a great cpu you have Have you tried raising the Vcore more ?
CPU @ cascade, 4870CF @ Mach2, and 7-6-5-15 (although the last one, won't improve the score as much as the first 2 ) and you will easily get 32k

Keep up the good work guys !

    Nicely done guys!!

    Beers were well-earned

I bet you know how crazy the scores would be if the cards were frozen too

    Good work looks good...

These cards will really shine with cold and more juice, with a 5.8g+ quad...

    Keep pushing it...

I like what I'm seeing here. My vote for more voltage to the GPUs also.
The little air system that could.

Yes, this setup cries for ln2 on cpu and mach 2 on gpus - and for more voltage.

For the moment itīs a matter of time. But maybe we can have a killer-setup in a few days.

When we tried higher vcore the last time on our Maximus we couldnīt get better results. 1.82 volt seems to be either the sweetspot of our cascade or of our Maximus. Maybe we need to mod this board....

Yes, I love this cpu. Funny thing is that this is our replacement-cpu. The first one we tried did also 5.6 ghz under cascade and 1.82 volt through 3d06. This chip had no problems booting at -100 degrees while the one we used for these 4870-benchies did have a problem once. So we made our decision to put this golden chip in a daily rig and keep it as replacement.

In the last few weeks we got problems with our setup and so we tried this replacement-chip. And as you can see it was the right decision to keep it.

Results arenīt that high like yours (congrats for your cfx-benchies ) but we work on that.

No need to feel small. I think itīs 90 % luck that we found this cpu.

Yesterday I had a little time and I did some singlecard-benchmarks with nearly the same cpu-clocks. And here they are:

Als screens can be clicked to open a larger version.

    3DMark01

    compare-url

LOD +3, high priority and nothing else - thatīs it.

    3DMark03

    compare-url

For 2k3 the result is ok but we need more gfx-power.

    3DMark05

    compare-url

32k with watercooled single-gpu is ok too.

    3DMark06

    compare-url

    21.7k singlecard isnīt too shabby.

    Aquamark

Unfortunately I couldnīt break into the 320kīs but we will work on that.

    congrats!
nice cpu! nice 2k1! nice Aq3!
so did you use both cards under mach2 for this?
what gpu temps did you get with the cards under load?

you guys def need to dig out that "Wandfluter" again for the nice light effects, with the light like this it looks quite crappy :P
with the light from an angle elike the last time the walls looked really cool and stylish ^^

Both cards had watercooling on the gpu. Mach 2-units werenīt used.

so this was with water only? nice!!!
so when are you going for the mach2 units?
4870s are burning up around 170W at stock already iirc... so those mach2 units will be quite busy removing all the heat, especially when oced!
but im curious how well the rv770 responds to low temps, maybe its mostly heat limited and doesnt need that much extra vgpu... but im affraid it wants volts... lots of volts

and then the gt units are too weak and water might get you better results at high vgpu than mach2 units LOL

    Very nice results guys!!

have you managed to get 900+ GPU Mhz at that Vgpu? also did you try 1200Mhz mem speed? cant wait to see some vmoded 4870's i think their begging for it !!

Our mach2-units had their first use with our 2900xtīs. With 1.40 vgpu we had ~0 degrees under load with these cards.

I donīt know if the 4870s produce more heat or not. But I think that shouldnīt be a major problem.

We tried them under cold a few days before. Unfortunately we hadnīt luck.

We flashed 950/1100 and started 3d06. In gt1 we got a nice increase in fps but during gt2 the system freezed. Since then, both cards never booted up again.

No condensation, no damage - something went wrong but we currently donīt know what.

Next step is to unsolder vgpu-mod, put them under stock cooler and try to boot up - letīs see what happens.
