    Talking Commando takes on Wolfdale 45nm - E8500 -> 5104Mhz at 1.60v !

    Commando takes on Wolfdale 45nm - E8500 -> 5104Mhz at 1.60v !

    Let's see how the old 965P C2 chipset holds up for E8500 Wolfdale

    Asus Commando takes on 45nm Wolfdale E8500 cpu. I decided to go back to Asus Commando as the motherboard was already prepared and insulated for Kayl Black FrozenSS 1/4HP phase change cooling.

    First I installed my E6700 cpu on Asus Commando, so I could flash the bios using biso Ez Flash from 1501 bios to 1605 bios. Then I installed E8500 but system wouldn't boot - stuck on CPU INIT on LCD display. Then I decided to reinstall E6700 cpu, and flash from 1605 bios to 1604 bios, then reinstalled E8500 and now it booted up!

    Not sure if it's bioses issues with E8500 but when I play with high FSB, only the first reboot from setting high FSB in bios will load into windows, subsequent bios exits result in system boot hanging with DET DRAM displayed on LCD display ? Never had such an issue with E6600 or E6850 on Asus Commando with 1501 bios. Definitely, bios and/or memory related I think as I got a higher FSB with 5-5-5-x than 4-4-4-x.

    Anyway down to fun stuff

    System
    • Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Q740A493T
    • Kayl Black FrozenSS 1/4HP
    • Asus Commando 1604 bios
    • 128MB Gainward FX5200 PCI
    • 2x1GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer PC2-8500
    • 2x1GB Team 6400C3 Micron D9GMH
    • 160GB Seagate 7200.7 SATA
    • Pioneer DVR-08 Burner
    • Sony FDD
    • 620W Corsair HX620 Modular PSU
    • WinXP Pro SP2

    Some CPUZ max capture screens

    570FSB not stable, still have to figure it out - memory or bios related issues.

    @4800Mhz at 1.480v idle

    @4940Mhz at 1.528v idle

    @5003Mhz at 1.560v idle

    Kayl Black Frozen SS 1/4HP power! Bios says -25C evap says -42.2C heh

    @5104Mhz at 1.600v idle

    Loose memory 5-5-5-18 Super Pi 1M

    Kayl Black Frozen SS 1/4HP power! Bios says -21C evap says -40.2C heh

    --------------------------
    Some Super Pi 32M action

    @4850Mhz at 1.584v idle

    Bios says around -24C while evap says -41.4C idle and -39.8C Super Pi 32M load. Speedfan 4.32 takes too long to load, but did do a Systool dual 32M Pi load test and reported cpu temp as -37C idle and -10C load.

    Not bad for 1:1 on 965P C2 chipset compared to my E8500 @4791Mhz - 9.5x504FSB 4:5 630Mhz 5-5-4-9 run @9m 48.360s

    Nice work as always. What was maxFSB of this chip on air and on SS Phase?

    On water around 535-555FSB for 32M to cpuz validation on Asus Blitz Formula P35 board. On SS is what you see above but could be bios issues holding me back on Asus Commando 965P C2 chipset.

    Very nicely done George! Did you mod MCHBAR registers?

    Thanks guys..

    before, yup did the usual tweaks of mchbar unless you have some new ones to share ?

    E8500 @5282Mhz at 1.704v idle / 1.696v load

    E8500 managed max CPUZ Validation of 5282Mhz at 1.704v idle! Bios set vcore was 1.75v. 1.7625v and above vcore jumps in vcore alot i.e. 1.7625v bios set = 1.808v vcore and scales up from there so dangerous territory for E8500 i suppose ??

    Max 1M @5104Mhz at 1.704v idle / 1.696v load

    Max 32M @5033Mhz at 1.704v idle / 1.696v load

    Thanks - yeah probably a good 8-16 seconds slower than P35 DDR2 ?

    1605 bios won't boot my E8500 for some reason stuck on CPU INIT, 1604 works though

    how does this FSB compare to newer chipsets
    there seems to be something odd going on with this C2 revision chipset as per loco's thread

    try that 1605 bios again
    maybe second time lucky since it works lol

    great results and fairly decent speeds i must say

    what's this MCHBAR stuff you guys are talking about again heh

    Thanks to Kayl's Black FrozenSS 1/4HP to think this unit was originally created for FX-60 s939 days to be tuned for high heat loads but not too low temps to combat FX-60 s939 cold bug hehe

    So far FSB for me hasn't changed much actually a bit lower on Commando than Blitz Formula for max bootable cpuz validation 540FSB vs 555FSB on Blitz Formula. Mchbar tweaks been documented on i4memory.com for past 6 months dinos http://i4memory.com/showthread.php?t=4268 thanks to JP's research

    Not really; I'm focused on P35's. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...1&postcount=48

    BTW, I'm sure you know that, but offset FED1403Fh set to 23 is the most important; and still is on newer chipsets.
