    P5N-E SLI & Wolfdale E8400~!!!

Sooooooo, I picked up an E8400 through my company from a wholesaler and threw it in today.

    Batch: Q740A523
    Packdate: 12/20/07
    Version: E27439-001 1.225V max.

So let's see what she can do now.

Here's the story of getting her up and running.

Threw her into my P5N-E SLI board and started up to only be greeted by ROMSIP Table Update don't restart/power off.

Never seen that before, so it kind of freaked me out. I reset cmos before throwing the cpu in of course since my previous e6420 settings might mess things up.

So I get into bios and set everything to my liking and save, only to get the same message as the first cold boot, but in the bios.

Everything saved fine, get out of bios and it posts, stops at windows load.

I get back into bios and notice I left spread spectrum settings on. Turn 'em all off and save, same romsip message and this time it loads windows and I'm typing to you from my desktop.

Default settings for cpu for now. Going to play with it as soon as I'm done writing this.

I think I'm the first person, in the general public, to slap one of these puppies into this board, no?

Will post back as things progress.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Anyways here's a shot from my desktop.

So far I have her running at 4050MHz (450x9) with 1.36vcore.

Dang, doesn't look like such a great chip so far.

Both cores are way off each other. At idle they're at Core 0: 33, Core 1: 36-37 and at load they hit Core 0: 54-55, Core 1: 57-58.

Then just in windows doing random stuff they will be up to 8 degrees off of each other in temperature.

One will spike up and down while the other core sits idle.

I checked system monitor and both cores seem to behave similarly so loads should be pretty equal just from watching the graph.

    All subjective of course.

    I'll keep you guys updated.

Orthos running 10mins so far with Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme with vantec stealth fan open case at the moment P182.

Edit:: The little message goes away after saving to the bios once. It only comes back when replacing the cpu, so each time you take it out to reapply thermal paste it comes back.

Oh, that was a mistake on my part, haha.

    Didn't notice until later on.

The vcore was on AUTO in the bios, but it came up like that. Strange, I know.

Sooooo, I've decided to wait for an official bios release or go get myself an Asus P5K-E board.

This board doesn't officially support the Wolfdales for a reason, no bios release, means no stability.

I couldn't get my system stable at stock settings, so I threw my E6420 back in and packed up the E8400 wolfy.

I think I might just go out and get that P5K-E board.

Let me know what you guys think.

Just "dropped" my SLAPL 0745A367 - E8400 in my P5N-E SLI.

Pretty much the same "scary" startup as reported by threadstarter.

My board proved earlier with an E6420 to not be ecpecially good FSB-wise.

So far it runs OK at 425x9 (1.31 load).

    Update:
    Found a preliminary 24/7-setup.
3R-System R310 "Air Khan" (mAtx with room for ATX-MB).
MIST 120mm - cooled by 1000rpm(max) fan (included in case)
    MIST pump/reservoir.
    AC Cuplex Pro CPU-block
    Thermaltake NB-block

    NOTE:
Vdrop is massive (as usual with these boards).
    1.40 in Bios yields 1.33@load

    This "budget combo" rocks.

TL1000S> Have you got it stable?
Like I said I couldn't get it stable at default settings (stock).
So I'm curious as to how you and the other thread's OP got it stable.

Maybe the those cpu settings are the key? I never thought virtualization, etc. in the cpu settings would have anything to do with system stability since if it isn't being utilized why would it have issues?

I dunno, but I'm gonna give it another go over the weekend.

    Cheers,
    Mike

As stable as it gets I think.
That's why I posted a "OCCT Stable screenie" previously.
As current Bios probably will need some more tweaks/updates with this board, I think this is as good as it gets with "Wolfie".

Popped in a Asus 8800GT(256MB) today and beat my previous bests in 3DMarknn except 06, where my Q6600-rigg(G0) still leads (with HD3870).

Screenshots from todays testing(3DMark01 really rocks):

Just wondering if you ran orthos or prime (latest version) for over 40mins.

If knowledge serves me right, OCCT only runs for 30mins right?

I could run Orthos stable for 48mins, then it would crash, and hang my system.

I'm really starting to think it's because the cpu isn't fully supported with a bios update yet.

As soon as the bios comes out I'm running out to pickup another cpu and test things out some more, since reselling these cpus shouldn't be a big problem lately.

    Yeup, I'll keep you updated.

One forum member is spreading false information saying that the latest 0803 bios for this board supports the "new" 45nm cpus.

He is mistaken, and I hope he realizes this before people start running out and picking up these cpus for this board and run into stability issues and can't install Oses and such.

Some have it stable, others don't. I don't know what "stable" is for them, but I couldn't get my retail E8400 stable at stock settings on my P5N-E SLI board.

Just waiting on the Asus engineers to come out with a bios release for these 45nm cpus (wolfdale only on this board) for this board.

    Should be very soon.

Sorry, i have to say that if you could not get your chip stable on this mobo, that doesnīt mean that others wounīt. Every board oc differently and you should equally ask them which bios and cmos settings (mem timing, voltage etc) they are using.

I am making the move from AMD and decided on the P5N-E with teh E8400 as I have a budget.

I do not have any other intel chips never mind one that is compatable with the board. Is the E8400 only working under the latest BIOS? Or would it work (enough) to update the BIOS to the latest version? I don't want to buy the chip and board and then not be able to use it because the board has an old BIOS revision. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi,
    try out this link.

I presume most owners of this mobo and E8400 chip are using the 0803 Bios and the good news is, itīs so easy to flash a new bios on this mobo
In case you run into any problem with ocing your chip, just write the dude that started the post on the link i pasted he is always there to help
Meanwhile welcome to the intel camp, i use to be an AMD fan too(wise move for now)

Okay so Asus finally updated their cpu support page for this board.

E8400 is supported with the 0803 bios. Wow took 'em long enough to tell us that.

Also a new bios is out.
    ftp.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socket775/P5N-E%20SLI/0901.zip

not listed on their support downloads website.

I just installed it and so far so good after a good cmos clear, etc.
Release notes say more memory compatibility fixes. That's it.

I have to get my hands back on one of those E8400s to test this puppy out.
