Depends on which project(s) you're running. DDDT tends to do well with Ubuntu x64. If you are running all the available projects, a quad-core would probably get a couple thousand more points per day with Windows x64. Doesn't matter which version. The 64-bit versions of Vista, XP, Server 2003 & Server 2008 all do well with 64-bit clients.

I have DDDT and fight against aids selected, should I just choose DDDT only?

Well, you could try running both for a week, then switch to only DDDT. See if you notice a difference. DDDT tends to generate more points per day than the other projects. At least that has been my experience.

Since they fixed hcc for linux it looks like that you get a fair amount of points there, too.

When did they fix it? I was told a couple of days ago it was still messed up?

One other thing. You can download a free evaluation version of Server 2008 (RC1). If you register with Microsoft, you can get a product key that's good until June 30th.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/audsel.mspx

There's also a 30-day free trial version that requires no key.

Edit: Will the drivers for my 2900xt be on the disc that came from ATI?

Driver support for Server 2008 x64 is very limited right now. I have it installed on two machines and mostly use Microsoft's default drivers. But both machines are used only for crunching, so it's no big deal. Also, a lot of programs that work on Server 2003 x64 won't run on 2008 unless you disable driver signing.

I had no problem with the motherboard (ga p35 ds4) drivers or 2900xt drivers, they installed from the disc fine. It was my wireless network card and none of the 64 bit drivers they offer would work....

Server 2008 and Vista SP1 use the same kernel. The security is very similar, which is a good thing or a bad thing depending on your point of view. The 64-bit versions of both operating systems require kernel mode code signing. You can disable driver signing during boot-up by pressing F8. The advanced boot option menu will appear. Just select "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement".

There was a utility called Atsiv that allowed users to load or unload unsigned drivers. But Microsoft considered it to be malware and yanked its digital certificate (I believe it was Verisign who actually revoked the certificate).

I had to take 2008 RC1 off my gaming rig. After 2-3 days, everything just slowed down to what my dad's 2.4ghz celly w/ 512mb ram computer runs like. Not happy with that. Installed Vista Ultimate x64 and everything is back to normal, except for my HD3870 being dead. Tried it in several different computers, and everything lights up, the keyboard LEDs flash like they do when it POSTs, but no video signal. Pretty sure it has something to do with my MCW60 mount.

So I'm using an X1900XT I used to fold on for gaming.

    I miss my 3870.

I reinstalled server 2008 again, the driver installs with no problems and shows to be ok in the device manager. It is disabled as it was the first install and will not enable when I enable it?

Make sure DirectX is enabled. Also, under Performance Options, set it to Programs instead of Background Services.

In order to convert Server 2008 into a workstation (i.e. running like XP or Vista), you have to do a few things. Below is a link to an old guide for Server 2003. Some of the same things apply for Server 2008.

And this could be why the wireless card is not working? I have got linux back on again, but if thats the reason I will put server 2008 back on again...

Your wireless is probably not working because Server 2008 does not support the driver, at least not yet. At this point, you may be better off sticking to Ubuntu.

Thats what I was thinking also, and I only have one card out of all of mine (gigabyte) that even offers 64 bit drivers. I had to take it out of another rig to try to get server 2008 working. Server finds the driver and installs once I point to the drivers I downloaded but it will not enable the card...

road-runner, just a quick google search and I came up with this. I hope it helps.

Windows Server 2008 (”Longhorn”) Wireless Gotcha

Well, it seems that yesterday’s issue was not hardware or driver related at all (sorry Asus!). Windows Server 2008 (”Longhorn”) does not install wireless networking support by default and you must install it by adding the Wireless Networking feature (details at http://blog.kirupa.com/?p=99). Although I do feel a little stupid (especially after buying a second wireless adapter) it would have been nice if the Network Diagnostics told me that Wireless Networking had to be installed rather than suggesting a hardware/driver issue or a missing TCP/IP protocol.
