VR-Zone - Gigabyte X38-DQ6 vs Asus Maximus Formula

Good review of these two monster boards. I was personally expecting a little better in the OC department for the price of these boards, but I suspect bios updates should help.

Not much of a fan of Gigabyte's Crazy Cool, but the Gigabyte board will probably be cheaper everywhere... (if both boards could be $250 that'd be perfect)

You can take off the Crazy Cool plate on the back of the processor socket. The manual even has instructions on how to... or at least that is what I have heard.

yes, it is really easy to do so.

hopefully as BIOS matures on both platforms, we will continue to see performance increases.

Excellent review for the short amount of time they've had.

Clubit has gigabyte dq6 board for $299. Prices should fall. Also in gigabyte line up there is x38 ds5.

I own the Gigabyte P35-DQ6, and it is quite a wonder. With the latest BIOs, not a single problem!

But, I am DIGGING that Asus Maximus Formula block.
I think I just like water cooled chipsets, even though it's overkill.

And that LED function? They should make it Xtreme to be honest. Crazy? Eh.
But, I am sure the amount of times that I stick my head down my case to stare at LEDs is definitely going to increase.

And after seeing the benchmarks, I am going to purchase one.

What do you think the chances are of the Maximus Formula having that option that the P5K Deluxe has that eliminates, is it VCore droop or VDroop?

(or the DFI X38-T2R for that matter)

The X38 range from Gigabyte has vastly improved BIOS's, no longer hidden memory timings and voltage settings are better.
Unfortunately i managed to kill their X38T-DQ6 (DDR3) last night, blown mosfet while on LN2.
As for the CrazyCool gardbage on the Gigabyte boards, you can easily remove the backplates and they supply screws to reattach the NB with. Removing this plate does not void warranty.

The Asus offering should be a strong as ever

its a heatsink attached on the backside of the mainboard, what makes it bad is that its get into the way of backplates that come with cpu coolers, so, either you have to use the pushpins or, remove the heatsink on the back of the board.

The main problem is that the chipset block is attached to Crazy Cool, so if you remove the Crazy Cool system u need to find a way to atach the chipset....

Don't believe so. The P35-DQ6 comes with 2 little bolt things for the heatsink if you remove crazycool.

And as long as there isn't a backplate needed for the heatsink you don't need to remove CrazyCool. I never removed it when I used watercooling.
