I thought using the latest floppy driver from Intel would be better. I will try the CD driver too.

I thought I had the latest. I will look for a more up to date version.

I had to run in comatibility mode for Vista as well. But my XP results are the same.

I am not going to bash Vista at all. I have been very satisfied with the OS as a whole. Obviously with every MS release they rework the entire GUI, but once you get passed the nuances the OS is fantastic and REMARKABLY stable. Getting drivers out of the kernel is one of the single most important design changes.

I have NOT been satisfied with vendor driver support for Vista, especially when it comes to Nvidia drivers. The DRM crap is a bit annoying, but that's what a secondary/virtual machine is for!

    Hello!

I was thinking of replacing my P5B DLX with one of these Abit boards, but I have a few questions first.

    1. Is the 4pin molex connector between the PCI slots nessesary even though I only have one graphics card?

    2. What memory would go good together with this board? I was thinking of 2x1024MB PC6400 sticks, cause PC8500 is still a bit expensive imo.

    3. How do you flash bios on this board, is there any easy option like Ezflash2 on Asus boards?

    4. I read something about some PWM thing getting very warm, what is this anyway? :x

is not normally needed unless you have every slot occupied by a card.

    2. What memory would go good together with this board? I was thinking of 2x1024MB PC6400 sticks, cause PC8500 is still a bit expensive imo.
crucial is very good...i would buy that kind.

    3. How do you flash bios on this board, is there any easy option like Ezflash2 on Asus boards?
you can flash within windows desktop but i do not recommend it...to many people have had bad flashes from windows....the other way is to do it with a floppy or USB (thumb) drive thru a DOS prompt...Abit provides the "BAT" files, flashing program and "BIN" file in all-in-one download for the official bios releases....DO NOT FLASH IF YOU ARE OVERCLOCKING

    4. I read something about some PWM thing getting very warm, what is this anyway? :x
that all depends on what kind of processor you are going to use and how high of vcore you will use.

you can minimize the temps by doing my easy to do heatpipe mod: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...147163&page=76

Many go for memory based on Micron chips. I like this G.Skill that isn't:

    G.Skill 2GB DDR2 HK PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS4

Tighter 4-4-3-5 timings, overclocks past its rated speed nicely, and uses less voltage, 2.0-2.1v.

There is a very good sticky, including user approved memory, for the IP35 Pro at, of all places, abit forums:

Hi , this board absolutely loves my 4 x 1GB Crucial 10th Anniversary. Am able to run 1000Mhz 5-5-5-15 @ 1.825v , fast enough for me

1T doesnt seem to offer improvements over 2T , tbh i didnt think 1T was possible with 4 sticks .. perhaps thats why the performance gain isnt so high.

Things i think could have made this board better

    1. Less vdroop .. nearly 0.9v on my quad xeon 3210 (B3)

    2. Intel Gigabit Controllers on PCI-E

    3. Bootmenu

    Amigan.

Can you please explain why you can't flash if you are overclocking? I'm thinking that you're OC settings will simply reset and you have to do it again, unless there are other problems?

always reset everything to default settings before flashing from windows or DOS...the other thing that i advise to do is set your memory to the voltage that will make it work properly...i always set mine to 2.1v even though it is not overclocking...just to be sure proper voltage is getting to the sticks.

the real reason to not flash when you are overclocking: if you have a overstessed system where you do not have enough voltage supplied, that's a sure way of getting a bad flash and then the board is "dead"!

my HDTach are done in vista 32 bit (top pic) and XP SP2 (bottom pic)...both OS's reside on the same two drives (Raid 0) attached to the same Areca controller....they are configured for dual booting.

it says to me that vista is a "dog" of an OS when it comes to benches....i'll wait for SP1 to roll along before making the decision to use Vista full time...but...SP1 has to prove itself to be GOOD!

Ace, are you using the most recent chipset/RAID drivers for Vista? Once again the VENDOR is at fault not MS or Veesta.

It's tough to make a comparison from an OS with an established 5 year life span.

yes, using current drivers for vista Areca card...vista was rushed out the door...never seen so much negative feedback for vista...when XP came out, there was hardly any negativity with that OS.

I think you missed the millions of gamers who refused to use XP cause it was slower

Seriously there was thousands of posts all over the web about how XP sucks, it's slow, it has bad drivers etc. Now look at it...everyone thinks XP is god's gift to the PC. Well guess what? Vista will be the same way. You may not adopt it early, but soon enough (sooner than it was with XP over Win98) it will become necessary.

Vista has it's problems but to be honest, I find less problems with Vista now than I find with XP after all the service packs and hotfixes it had. Xp gives me more headaches than Vista ever does. Plus I can actually use 4GB in Vista while still remaining compatable with all my software. Xp x64 could never do that.

Going to use my E6600 and not too high vcore since I was only hoping to reach upto like 3.5GHz.

EDIT: Would these be any good? As in, will I be able to get my E6600 to at least 3.5GHz with these? http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/part...2KIT12864AA804

i seem to remember about the gaming issue between XP and Win98...but they worked that out and everyone made the transition over...vista is totally a different bread where the kernel can no longer be impacted by drivers...i presume this is why video drivers and games are going to be a long time adjusting to the vista code...this is going to be a bigger jump than XP.

AND...when Intel weighs in and says we are not transitioning until at least SP1 arrives on scene...and...the Olympics is going to rely on XP SP2 instead of letting vista screw the pooch!

i jumped to XP right away and i loved it over Win98 and ME...vista is hard to love!...to many idiosyncrasies!...i am going to take my time making the transition...XP STILL works!...IMO, an excellent OS.

Ram has nothing to do with "Clockability" of your CPU. Fast Ram will however help your overall System Performance. Your Choice of Ram is not the fastest available!

XP sucks totally...I hate it so much. I had huge headaches with it all the time. I almost bought a mac laptop because I hated XP that much.

You'll never ever ever ever ever ever convince me that Vista is a bad OS. It's 100% more stable for me and I haven't had ANY issues gaming. Drivers will be released and improved and MS is pushing it pretty hard too which means developers will have to get to work.
