    Redline Water Wetter...

I know some here use products like HydrX, Zerex, Pentosin G11/G12....but all of these, while providing corrosion inhibition, also reduce the heat transfer capability as compared to straight water.

So, does anyone here use Redline's Water Wetter? According to Redline, this product provides the corrosion protection like Zerex and the other glycol products we seem to use around here, but does not reduce the heat transfer capabilities of the water it's added to due to it not being either ethylene or propylene glycol based.

It's also supposed to control foaming and reduce water's surface tension which is supposed to help enhance heat transfer by water.

For corrosion prevention, it would seem that Redline's product would be much preferred over glycol-based solutions.....we really don't have to worry about our loops freezing or boiling over, so no real need for glycol at all.....and we wouldn't sacrifice the thermal carrying capabilities of water for corrosion protection.

Just curious.....it runs around $6-$7 for 12 oz. in auto parts stores.

Redline has a two page .pdf of technical info on the product.....but it is after all an auto product, so their research and focus is on how this product helps in auto cooling systems.

Link to Redline's White Paper on Water Wetter.

I used to use it a few years ago. It can really stink. Better with Zerex IMO.

It used to be sold in watercooling shops a few years ago but (correct me if I am wrong here) it was pulled from sale at request of the manufacturer for use in PC watercooling as it was untested.

I also heard that it builds up a thin film on parts each time the loop is rebuilt/refilled, eventually it builds up to the point where it hurts temps. I've never used it so, I can't say if it's true or not.

WaterWetter was the only choice years ago... then PurpleIce came along, then Zerex, then HydrX and so on and so on... others were discovered / presumed to be better... WaterWetter lost favour, and also copped a lot of flak for it's effects on certain materials - Zerex kind of replaced it (PurpleIce foamed too much), then Pentosin etc all popped up...

S'just another piece of watercooling history. Asetek's Pinky Red colored additive that they (used to?) sell as anti-algae fluid was just WaterWetter...

Do not use waterwetter.... I made that mistake and had to replace nearly every component in my setup a few years ago. It will create an ugly, waxy, insulating surface on the inside of all your parts. Bleh!

ww tends to get gunky. but if you changed your loops often, its fine.

why not give it a try.

dont think I have ever seen a loop with WW and any Delrin in it. Not that i think it will have any effects, just curious.

Have you ever used it? The more you change out your loop the more fresh WW you get in there to build up. Refer to my first post in this thread as to why not to give it a try. It provides NO increase in performance short term, decrease long term, handicapped parts, and very little anti-corrosion properties.

This verifies what I stated earlier.

I will say that redline left a film on all of my components.

    yes.

what I meant was to try it if the loop is only to be run for a little while.

he can then clean the gunk and use something else, but he will have used it at least. experience is better than word-of mouth...and these days EVERYTHING gets recommended word-of mouth.

Well, as I said, I was just curious. I have seen WW for sale with a DD label on it at MicroCenter and at a couple of web retailers. Was curious to find out if it had any advantages over glycol-based additives.....and it appears to have none while having rather bad disadvantages.

And Senater_Cache, while true experience is sometimes the best teacher, at my advanced age of >50, I've finally learned to take other people's experience in things as fact...esp. when more than two repeat the same experience using something like this product.

Suffice it to say I won't be introducing WW into my loop. Thanks to all for your valuable input.
