    Laing D5 dead?

Ok, I'm a long time lurker that got back into watercooling after a pretty long time on air. (In those early days the blocks were made of steel and the new cool things was radiators, most people used a PBB (Pretty Big Bucket) instead of a radiator )

Yesterday i got my package that included a Fuzion, PA120.3, a res and a Laing D5 vario.
I assembled the stuff, filled the loop and all was good for leak testing. Then i started the pump and it spinned as expected, there was a nice flow in the res so it seemed ok .. for a while that is. After 3-5 minutes it just stopped, no strange sound or anything. I cut the power and switched it on again and it started again, this time for about 2 seconds then it died again. After that it's totally dead, no amount of tapping get it starting.

I have opened it and the rotator is not stuck or obstructed in any way i can see or feel. The only thing i can think of is that it was loose in it's box on delivery and may have got damaged by "careful" deliverygoons.

Are there anyone that has experienced anything similar and have a solution or am i getting a ticket for RMA train to boredom?

Sure you haven't got an airlock that it can't push past, thus giving appearance that it's stalled?

Yeah, i'm pretty sure, there's no natural place in the loop where an airlock could appear.
I have also tried to start it very briefly dry, without the front with the inlet/outlet, just to se if it lived but it didn't even move.
One thing i just remembered is that it died 10-20 seconds after i changed it from speed 5 to 3 but there was no effect in setting it back to 5.

Well, I was going to suggest inverting your molex pins but the case you describe doesn't seem to match up with the solution. I'd try testing it again but this time with just a few feet of tubing attached and a reservoir/T-line to feed it (you can empty into a sink). If that doesn't work, then you sir have a failed D5 and most likely need to RMA.

I will test a different PSU as soon as I'm finished with my failing webserver... The journaling tables decided to corrupt so I'll have to fix that first.. Life without redundancy is thrilling isn't it?

I saw that the psu i used was just below (1w) the pumps rating.. Shouldn't be a problem though but hope is not dead.

Guess my luck is finally back! It was the psu.. It's a lab psu i have used for many years and it has been great but it seems that it doesn't have the punch it used to.. Maybe the electrolytes have dried up or something..
As soon as the pump got a taste of the Corsair psu it just jumped of joy!

    Thanks for the help guys!

Wow, and I thought my Luck was bad.

    A dead d5!!..

    Anyways, RMA it!...

I guess, If it ran for barely 3-5 mins, then 20 seconds, your PSU over-volted it or somthing?

Yeah up and running just fine.. 34C crunching on default speeded E6400.
For some reason the cpu didn't like the 3.2GHz overclock that ran fine on air but I'll dig into the overclocking tomorrow after work as i need the sleep.

Ok bad luck is back.. This morning when i started the computer i heard a loud humming and the cpu temps skyrocketed.
The pump has failed i think as it wont spin just hum.. if i help the rotor it spins slowly half a round or so but stops right away.
The rotor itself can be rotated easily with manual labour so it's not stuck or anything..

I don't know if the corsair psu sent a spike through it or anything but i'm beginning to think the pump got damaged when delivered, it was loose in the box and had no padding.
Before i send it to RMA do you have any suggestions and is it possible to open it to check the electronics without the store noticing?
I repair 3G base system boards for a living so the pump electronics shouldn't be that hard to figure out.

Yeah, it's easy to take apart some of the pump. The top and impeller come off very easily by simply spinning the casing wheel off. The impeller then easily comes out with a little force that's magnetically holding it in place. The back cover to the electronics pops off easily which give you access to the back of the PCB...you just have to carefully move the large capacitor out of the way to take a look.

But if you heard a knocking that should be on the impeller side....maybe the ceramic bearing pin gave way or something? Not much for moving parts....just the impeller.

No it's not the impeller that makes the sound as it makes it even when the impeller is gone.
Hmm i will contact the store tomorrow and see if i could replace it. I'm getting pretty tired of this pump. Hopefully the next one will behave.
