Hi eva, or anyone else here. I am getting finally tomorrow my P5K deluxe. And I am pretty new to Intel ( currently got a AMD s939, didnt tweak anything for like 2 years:X) So I want to prepare myself for it. I see that u run memtest 86+ for testing ram first. I remember that it is not neccasary to run all tests but just some of those ( 8 test if I can remember ), so which of them u often run and how many loops( or hours) will give u a good indication of stability of RAM, and what are actually SPD timings and what values should i set them, got btw a Mushkin XP2 Pc8500 5-5-4-12 @2,1-2,35V rated (D9MGH). And I know the Vdamper works pretty well on this board, so none vdroops ( or lil bit), but how are the vcore in real time , compared with what u set in BIOS?, did any one measured it with a Multi-meter? Any help appreciated

Just got mine set up after dead BX2.

    Initial findings:

    CPU: 3800 MHZ, 475x8 @ 1.46v
    RAM: 1:1 4-4-4-10 2T @ 2.1v

Looking promising. Getting some strange program errors, particularly with ZoneAlarm - going to have to try iron that out but I suspect it is the RAM. I might loosen it to 4-4-4-12 and see if that helps any.

Also feeling this strange OS "lag" where things jump around a little bit. Going to have to figure that out.

But so far, things are looking up!

EDIT: Bah, ram didn't like those settings. Backed it down to 422x9 4-4-4-10.

ASUS should be releasing 0403 for the P5K-D shortly, it has improved 1T operation and FSB straps. Overclocking is looking a little better in the mid-range now with tighter memory timings.

gives me hope that i can get more out of my OCZ Platinum chips which have turned out to be pretty disappointing. cant run DDR2-1000 4-4-4-15 with 2.35v or 5-5-5-15 at 1200mHz at same vDIMM. think its safe to run 2.4v w/o active cooling on the chips?

time to try the yellow slots
i wouldn't even try 2.1v vdimm without active cooling

It's not a stability issue, it's something else, like the BIOS is just stopping for no reason or something. I'll be running Orthos for awhile, and the OS just sorta stops responding. Orthos continues to still run, passing tests, but AI Suite/Core temp just stops updating, Orthos timer stops, the "GO" flashing stops, Tests continue to pass, can't even push the Start menu, Mouse still moves, but everything sorta just hangs there. I can't even turn the system off using the power switch, I have to turn it off using the switch on the PSU. After letting it cool off a bit, I go back into the BIOS, and the clock is behind, as it seems the time stopped after the "hang" occurs.

Anyone experience anything similar? Really need to figure out what's causing this. This is happening on stock settings even, it's really strange. Got a 40gb IDE hooked up, a sata optical drive on the black slot, both controllers running IDE mode. PSU is Corsair HX520.
what keyboard/mouse you using PS/2 and adaptors for PS/2 to USB ?

memtest86+ v1.70 usage guide applies to DDR1/DDR2 still in most cases http://i4memory.com/showthread.php?t=6

haven't measured with DMM as my board is in corner of the room which is hard to position myself to do something as delicate as shoving a DMM probe around the board LOL

As to what subtimings you should set there's no hard or fast rule, test in memtest and then windows whatever works stably for your memory. Loose sub timings to start with would be 10-42-10-10-11 and tighten and test from there

oooooh sounds good... 1T is something i haven't looked into much after hitting a wall around 350mhz 1T with 0311 heh

I got mine a few weeks ago and after gathering parts last night I tried to turn the system on - tried as there is no video display at all, no post no nothing. All the fans, hdds, cdrom start up but thats how far it goes.

    I have tried:

removed all devices but video card, memory, CPU
boot with one stick of ram (GSkill 8500)
move the stick of ram to different slots
another stick of ram (GSkill 6400)
    different PCI-E video card
    PCI video card
    generic 667 DDR2
    different power supply
    different CPU (celeron D)
moved the mobo on my desk
    clear bios
USB bios reflash (thought that bios might be empty as I get no post at all)
    battery out

Is there anything I missed? Contacted supplier and I will have to see what he says tomorrow (I hope Nigel is a nice guy).

    Nigel's a nice guy AFAIK

i had no video display once when i changed from PCI FX5200 card to 8800GTS PCI-E card... had to clear cmos to get 8800GTS PCI-E to work.. other than that no more video display issues.

what bios you using ? celeron D as in 533FSB cpus ? they aren't supported by P5K P35 chipset so you'd have boot up issues with 533FSB bus cpus on P35 chipset.

Trying another hard drive now, hopefully it was a HDD issue. Would suck if the mobo is just plain faulty. Really strange issue though, never ever experienced something like this before.

    I have a noob question...

You guys are running the 6600 at 400x9 on air, to make your memory ratios good (right?). Chip prices aside for a moment, is heat the only reason you don't use a 6700 and go to 400x10?

FYI: This P5K Deluxe doesn't support 533 FSB CPU anymore. Since Celeron D is a 533 FSB CPU, you are out of luck on that.

I was hoping to use my Celeron D 356 on it until I read Asus' FAQ section.

Starting to think my board is faulty. It has trouble booting after a forced shutdown. My Sata drive didn't get recognized just now, it's just acting really weird. If it fails consistently, I wouldn't be as confused, but why is it able to do Orthos for 4+ hours, then as I Shut Down from windows, it just hangs there, eventually being forced to turn it off from the PSU. Really weird. Time to RMA me thinks.

Edit: Board won't even POST anymore. Great...

Yeah I red about the CPU. Tried an X6800 same result.

EVA! a little feedback on the Abit IP35 Pro.

the only difference was higher FSB (495) for my Q6600 and higher memory bandwidth:

still about the same performance as the QuadGT which was limited to 410 FSB...except...the memory bandwidth.

with the same nb voltage i got pretty much the same temp as you as soon as i start pushing the ram a bit 37 iddle 46° after 5+ of orthos
i manage to reduce it a bit by replacing the asus tim under sb and nb by AC mx-1 tim now running at 44° max after 2hour+ of orthos.

for your S/B cooler you could try the HR-05 sli, its the only one i could think off that would fit with your 8800 gtx.

after reading all the great infos posted by eva i decided to test my ram while waiting for my WC parts :
iam using crucial pc8000 2*1gb did all my test with 4-4-4-9-2-25-2-2-4 @2.20 with HR-07 and a 80mm fan on top, OS : (vista 64).

yellow slot : max stable with orthos large fft(2hours+) 510 mghz
back slot : max stable with orthos large fft (5hour+) 528 mghz
black slot 1T : max stable sith orthos large fft (5 hour+) 444 mghz.

i'm still using stock NB heatpipe heastink with stock TIM unchanged... just a fan over NB and cpu socket area will so drops in temps but depends on your room/case ambients.. i get MB temps between 27-36C load with 15-28+C night/day room temps.

with sata disks disappearing also check the PCI-E frequency that is set is 100 on reboot/exit from bios

Are there any workarounds to the onboard crackling problem? In some games, such as Serious Sam 2, I get godawful crackling and would really like to find a way to fix that.

Thanks to Crucial PC2-8500 Ballistix's ability to hit 640+ mhz 5-5-5-9 3-30-3-3-3 at just 2.35v, I've managed to beat my personal best <3600Mhz Super Pi 32M time by ~4 seconds

1 second behind best 32M time at <3600Mhz.

    Straight boot from bios @7x510FSB 4:5 637Mhz 5-5-5-9 3-30-3-3-3 at 2.35v

New PB for 32M at <3600Mhz.

    Straight boot from bios @7x510FSB 4:5 637Mhz 5-5-5-9 3-30-3-3-3 at 2.35v
    - Setfsb bumped to 7x513FSB 4:5 641Mhz 5-5-5-9 3-30-3-3-3 at 2.35v

Next setfsb step from 513.9FSB is 514.7FSB so just overshot the 3600mhz mark for this run.
