I'm gonna Lap my QX6700 Quad Core Extreme Edition but first I will practice on a Pentium D 550 3.4GHz.
No sense screwing up an $1100 processor on a first attempt.

The square "frame" of thermal paste is where the CPU was making contact with the HSF (in the picture: the bottom of the HSF).

Lowes and walmart in my town doesn't have smaller than 600grit. I checked the local advanced auto parts and they have 1000 and 1500 but it has cars all over the package. Is it just as good as the stuff not made for cars? I dont wanna buy it online.

Lapping with wet sand paper actually helps to prevent fine dust(fine dust will gather on the IHS instead of flying around) from going into the IHS... and why we use wet sand paper? Because it's made to lap metal, giving it less friction while getting the job done!

I just received my lapping kit today and will lap both my heatsink and IHS but need to get some things clear since this is my first time. The lowest grit the kit has is 400 but I have some 320 grit lying around. Should I just start with the 320? If so, should I go up to the 400 grit next or skip it and head for 600?
When lapping with the figure 8 motion do I still have to turn the heatsink or cpu 90 degrees every couple of minutes?
After I'm done with the lapping should I use ceramique or AS5? I still have half a tube of both.
Lastly, should I use the same piece of sandpaper to lap the IHS after I'm finished with the heatsink or use a new piece?

lapped my e6600 after much debate,,,, no noticable difference with my watercooled setup, but i must admit - it looks damn good haha

Not a "lapper" myself, but as far as I know, it seems "the more, the merrier", when it comes to lapping (referring to the number of different sanding grits, of course).
Theoretically, you could even only use 1000 grit for the hole thing (or 2000 grit, or -insert value above 1000 here- grit). It would be, however, a MAJOR pain, both in the aif you were sitting down
AND in your hands and arms, as it would take forever to even everything out with such a fine grit...
As I've been reading in this post, adding to the little I know about sanding, you ideally would want to start with like 400 grit (320 seems a little too much, if I'm to trust what Eastcoasthandle said a couple of posts back), then go to 600, then 800, then 1000, etc.. This way you have a lot more control of what's going on, and how much you sand. It may also alleviate some of the "elbow grease" necessary for the whole processe, as it is much easier to sand down to 1000 grit from 800 than from 600.
Well, at least that's what it seems logical to me. Just my.

i started off with 600 then went on to 800 , 1000, 1200 and 1500 =) the whole thing lasted almost an hour. Goodbye Intel warranty! yeah!

Seems like my assumptions were not that off after all...
Shame lapping voids the warranty, though. I know it is very rare to have CPUs dying on you, sometimes even with horrendous amounts of OC. But it would be nice not having to worry about it...
Maybe we can talk Intel (and AMD) into having two lines of CPUs... One with the normal IHS and the other reserved for "lappers" or OC'ers. Less warranty (though here in Portugal you cannot go under two years in any circumstances for new non-consumable-non-battery products), cheaper (one step less on the production chain, though it would be necessary some other kind of CPU marking to know what it is...
One can only hope...
Btw, I'm celebrating my 100th post. Maybe now I can see all os the XS forums... hehe Not that this was the original reason to join in the first place, but it is a nice bonus
