    Infinity can't take the pressure (mount)

    Well, it was bound to happen... The BeaverTooth X-bite mod was too much for the Infinity to handle. Hopefully, this is why my temps weren't any better than with the push-pins, although the temps didn't jump 6c until 3 days after installation.

    I'll post pics of my home-brew brackets when (and if I survive) they are done-hopefully in a day.

    I was wondering if something like that might happen. Not having a flexible couple in place to absorb the thermal expansion is bound to place stress on those clips. In my first bolt-down mod, I used spacers under the clips to maintain the same distance, (and pressure), from the motherboard that the pins do.

    I switched to the use of springs because it allows the system to flex during warm-up. There still is some torque being applied to the clips, and I’ve considered putting spacers under the clips to limit it.

    One mount fabricated (warning-agricultural)

    My first attempt was much uglier than this!

    But this should allow me to get the pressure I want, without having a bracket failure.

    It's all about temps, baby!

    There is so little thermal expansion happening I think you'd have trouble measuring it with a micronometer.

    All along the watchtower the watchmen watch the eternal return.

    that thing is a monster

    ive never seen those brackets break before..

    I love it!

    I was just starting in one of those this weekend. Are you bolting it through the aluminum block with threaded stock?

    I'm planning on using 1/8" x 3/4" stock. Your looks like the horizontal pads are closer to the mounting holes than the original. I’m planning to try to maintain the same geometry of the original because I like the springs I’m using and need the additional length.

    Do a thread on it with some photos/drawings and a material list.

    I'm just sliding #8 x 1.5" stove bolts into the finned aluminum HS, where the original brackets clipped into. They will be kept in place with electrical tape wound around both brackets, until I can find some screws long enough to fit all the way thru that finned alum. top piece.

    You are very observant! These brackets are mounted further away from the mobo. Two reasons why-interference with the capacitors underneath them, and my back bracket bolts are quite long (they stick thru the backside about an inch with the stock mounts).

    I'l like to see pics of what you end up with, too!

    Since it’ll probably be awhile before I get ready for the “L” bracket mod, (my next project is to replace my back plate with a ZALMAN ZM-CS2.), here is what I have so far.

    The original idea was to bolt two machined extruded “L” channel clips through the finned part of the HSF.



    Here is the prototype along side the original. Ignore the finish on the L-clip, I was sanding off some of the tool marks and got curious about what kind of shine I could put of the part. I don’t plan to do the same thing to the real thing, (besides, we all know that putting a finish on HSF retainer clips beyond 600 grit is just a waste of time.)



    The raw stock cut to length waiting for me to do some test fitting with the prototype before I commit to the final geometry. Next to yours, it’s starting to look dainty. I’m interested in seeing how much material I can leave on it, (and still clear obstructions on my AW9D-MAX).

    An alternate design I considered, (before I got to see the prototype in real-life), had even less material.



    I still may need to remove some material near the ends of the vertical side for clearance for the knurled nuts.

    Finally, are some of the parts assembled in a “test” rig. The ZALMAN backplate is going on this week, and I’ll take the opportunity to test fit the prototype on the motherboard and HSF before I start on the final parts.
    The springs are from the Danger Den WB kit, I'm actually using the EK CPU in production, they're a bit larger.

    The back bracket you are using... How well does it control mobo flex? I've got an X-bracket that keeps the mobo flat no matter how much pressure...

    This one is pretty stiff, but I don't like the fact that it is metal and touchs back of the case. (I currently only have cut-outs in the motherboard tray for under the 72mm holes.)



    I haven't mounted the ZALMAN yet, but it does have some flex. I won't know if it's issue, until I hang some weight on it.

    By the way, did you find any threaded stock for mounting your clips?
