Talking TUNIQ DESTROYED! Project_Infinity Triumphs! *56k*

Well, since my friend was upgrading his cpu, ram, cooler and video card, I asked him if I could borrow his new tuniq when he got it for testing purposes. He said yes, so now I dont have to buy one for testing . This is the MOMEMT of truth for some people here. Here, we find out if all the work I put into modding my scythe infinity was worth it.

The goal of this experiment was to see if I could modofy the Scythe Infinity to be better than the tuniq at the same noise level. This is important to me because anyone can slap on two 220cfm delta's on the infinity and have the best air cooler, but kill his/her ears at the same time. So the noise level of two yate loons at roughly 1300rpms is 30dba. the full 2000rpms of the tuniq fan gets around 40dba. The fan controller on the tuniq was a bit odd. The rpm's didnt smoothly increase or decrease with the roatation of the knob. 60% of the dial will give maximum speed. I dont know why it does this...but Here are the settings I measured the speed at.

The low speed setting gave roughly the same noise as two yate loons. I still tested medium and high fan speed since I wanted to see the max performance this cooler could yeild. If the speed was turned any lower than *low* it would be almost too silent, and probably would barely spin. So I didnt test anything lower.

When I was installing the tuniq, one of the screws decided to snap so I used the screws I mounted the infinity on the tuniq. Everything is screwed in until the bracket bends, and the motherboard is bending as well, maximum pressure everywhere.

Here are some pix of the tuniq with the modded infinity:

Alright..enough talk, lets get to those temps...

temps measured using TAT, dual sp2004 load, 65f ambient.

    - Modded Scythe Infinity, x2 1300rpms Yate Loons Push/Pull Config, As5, Custom Mount

    2.4ghz, AUTOvcore
    Idle: 28c
    Load: 36c

    3.6ghz, 1.6vcore
    Idle: 43c
    Load: 59c

    - Tuniq Tower, as5, custom mount

    2.4ghz, AUTOvcore

    -Low
    Idle: 30c
    Load: 43c

    -Medium
    Idle: 29
    Load: 41c

    -High
    Idle: 29c
    Load: 40c

    3.6ghz, 1.6vcore

    -Low
    Idle: 49c
    Load: 71c

    -Medium
    Idle: 48
    Load: 66c

    -High
    Idle: 48c
    Load: 65c

SO! Based on the results, the tuniq pretty much gets its A55 handed to itself, especially when pumping high amounts of heat into it. Im feeling pretty good right now..beating a tuniq at full blast with something MUCH MUCH quieter.

Well...thats it for me tonight, hope you have all enjoyed the destruction of the mighty tuniq tower.

not expected results IMHO to see the modded infinity beats the Tuniq by this LARGE margin

You have 2 fans on the scythe and 1 on the tuniq. Of course there is going to be a difference. Is the infinity lapped? Is the tuniq? I wanna see the complete test bed

if you want...yes. The infinity is lapped true, I didnt have time to lap the tuniq, but perhaps today I will come home with a new lapping kit and try a lapped one with two, three fans on it. I was surprised be the large margin as well, especially under high heat loads.

not surprised myself, i have both tuniq and scythe infinity and infinity wins under load by 1-2C but tuniq is 1-2C cooler under load.

I think one thing to consider is that wide spaced fins like on the infinity are better for low rpm/cfm fans while the more densely packed fins on the tuniq do their job better with higher rpm/cfm fans as more pressure is needed to push the air through. Obviously the Infinity is much more adaptable in respect to the type of fan that can be used.

    Interesting project though

    hmmm Interesting!
However, I think your test setup for Tuniq is seriously flawed.
To be fair, there should be an exhaust fan, which is the typical installation of a tuniq 120.

I think my tuniq 120 installation is a typical one. The tuniq fan blows to a exhaust fan.

Would be interesting seeing a 3fan tuniq vs. 2fan infinity.

My point here is that the OP should compare his custom cooler to a typical tuniq setup a least. The tuniq is so big that it is very close to the exhaust window (as shown on his picture). It's natural to put an exhaust fan there.

The tuniq is crippled in his tests.

i would like to see the tuniq with the dual fans and how well it does. also with it lapped to the same quality. im thinking about trying the tuniq but need to find out a little bit more info and see if i can still fit my HR-05 cooler on my northbridge. the tuniq would be interesting with 2 or 3 fans on it

I don't know much about this cooler other than getting mine yesterday and the reviews that inspired me to buy it but, this is indeed one bad ass cooler!
Beside the fact that this thing is huge and looks like Big Foots left shoe in my case and is louder than hell turned all of the way up the results are very impressive indeed! Here are my results without lapping the Tuniq base and the Artic Silver 5 just applied , compared to my old cooler.....

2 fans on infinity only give ~1-2C better temps than 1 fan on infinity from my experience so factor that in, and infinity would of still won by 2-4C at 3.6ghz load

infinity wins under load by 1-2C but tuniq is 1-2C cooler idle.

so basically the infinity works better under high heat loads? Anyways..I home depot's highest grit sandpaper is 600 so Ill lap that tuniq soon. Im going to smother thermal paste in different parts of the base as well (just like the infinity). Going to try to make this more of an "apples to apples" test...

The contact between IHS and the cooler base is critical.
That's why people are reporting big decrese of temperature after laping IHS and/or cooler base, or using better thermal paste, Coollab liquid metal for example.

Make it a apple to apple comparison by all means before you draw any conclusions.

I do think the infinity should work better under high heat load because it has more heatpipes. An overclocked quad would probably show this.

lol..I know its critical man... I have the IHS already lapped, my question is if a finish with 600grit will be enough for now..I dont have anything higher atm.

I think you should lap it to the same finish as your custom infinity.
However, I think lapping the cooler base is much less effective/important than lapping IHS.

gee, a heatsink with two 120mm fans does slightly better than a heatsink with only one... WHO KNEW
