Battlefield 2142 With a Dash of Spyware!!!

    Source
Tipper Nic directs our attention to this forum post, where we read of a disheartening little slip of paper that suggests some seriously gross spyware will be installed along with Battlefield 2142, all in the name of in-game advertising

    Can we say boycott?

i hope Bf2142 sales will be a good bit lower then what EA is expecting.

If they are low maybe EA will learn that customers dont swallow all of their crap.

the only good bit i can see in this is that a paper mentions that the game contains spyware, so EA aint trying to sneak it by their customers.

BF1942, Desert Combat - Those were the days BF2 is still fun. But thats it EA you are not getting my $ this time

If any of you have not heard of quake wars then check it out. Allot more orginality and detail put into this game, no stupid unlocks either. Theres a demo coming out soon

It's probably the company Massive Advertising (I think). It isn't new and has been around for several games. What it does is monitors when you're playing your game and can/will change those advertisements. Open your hosts file and add the IPs of Massive to block their asses.

What's more upsetting to me about in game advertising is the lack of a discount. If they are making money from advertisments they need to lower the cost of the game to consumers. Or if we don't want that in our games then charge us the full price of the game.

Quake wars does look good, but what's wrong with unlocks in BF2? Other than the fact that the game will be forever buggy (lol, EA claims 2142 will not be the same, yet they can't even fix an older product, and the demo for this game crashed on me like three times...go wonder) the upgrade system kinda works out good, and gives ya something to work and look forward too. It gives the game a RPG dimension. But. If they start changing the damn system every update, to where nubs get every gun in the game, then they might as well scrap it.

I think something EA really needed to work on was the sniper rifles. Only a hs, with an upgrade rifle can kill a dude in one shot? Just so nubs won't cry to EA. this company, every single one of their games are buggy. They don't make bad games, just incomplete ones.

Everyone hold up your anti-EA signs and chant: "EA, WE WON'T PAY...EA, WE WON'T PAY...EA, WE WON'T PAY!!!!!!!"

if it's outright spyware, then EA is shooting themselves in the foot with this.. really bad! If it's just the same in game advert stuff they've had going on for a while then I guess it's not too big of a deal.. but I am -still- not a fan of that. Either way I am getting increasingly more reluctant about giving any more of my $ to EA for any games.. that is for damn sure. they're just getting overtly greedy, much like an evil empire. I don't want to help them go any further!

I too am excited for Quake Wars.. I hope it kicks BF2142's beeeehind in sales.

I hope it cost alot less, 20 dollars for the game wouldnt be too bad, I could handle the advertisements for that low of a price.

Run the programs and see what remote servers BF2142 is getting ads from. Then go into the windows/system32/drivers/etc/ directory and open up the file called "hosts" with notepad.

    127.0.0.1 madserver.net
    127.0.0.1 ad.madserver.net
    127.0.0.1 imp.madserver.net
    127.0.0.1 media.madserver.net
I can't take credit for it but by the looks of those addresses that is for Massive and not IGA. I'm sure more will follow after the game is widely available.

isn't the use of ads in this fashion create a well known open gate that hackers can use to gain access to your computer while you are gaming?

F'in right, look what happened to Sony + Spyware = OMG Sue!

I'm sure they'd much rather not tell anyone, lest their product not sell as well. This is another instance of a company inadvertently promoting piracy.

depends on the data form and what mechanism is used for the push/pull. but if this is not implemented well, there could be a large vulnerability...
