Absolutely not. Crossfire is not so different from SLI. It doesn't really mean anything besides the fact that ATI is adopting a new name. And maybe getting rid of the pointless doggle.

They are trading in the dongle for dual bridges similar to Nvidia's single SLI bridge.

Yeah...No doubt X1950pro will be $199 MSRP... Which means more-likely $170-180 before-long once the market floods. It makes sense they'd be competitively priced.

Considering the 7900gt/x1900gt are fairly equal depending on individual priorities, I personally think a higher-clocked x1900gt, which the x1950pro is, will excel past a 7900gs, which is a 7900gt after a mild stroke. Granted, we've still yet to see overclocking on the new ATi pcb or with the new quieter stock sink and should reserve judgement until price/performance can be compared...but I, like ya'll, imagine x1950pro will clock similarly if not slightly better than the current x1900gt and drive up to 1280x1024/1600x1200/1680x1050 decently enough depending on what frames you can stomach. Throw in Avivo, IQ, HDR+AA, future GPGPU functions available for it during and after you grab that/those shiny new R600(s) via the crossfire bridges('cause you know you're going to get one eventually), and it really doesn't sound like a contest...But that's just my uninformed opinion.

Sticking points for me with ATI: drivers(familiarity breeds contempt; I'm using them now), high power usage.

I think only the x1950xt and xtx have GDDR4, the pro comes with 1.4ns GDDR3 IIRC.

true 1950Pro will clock further in general and will perform better when overclocked (most likely).
And ATis card will likely also drop in price at a good pace.

Problems are that Nvidias 7900GS is already out ATIs answer stil has to.

But most people that buy likely wont overclock but are simply looking for a good card in their budget and its likely that X1950 will cost more then the 7900GS most of the time (if nvidia plays it smart) so the question ofc is if ATIs car fits inside peoples budget as most people i know are very unwilling ot go outside their budget.
The Poeple at XS will likely overclock and are more likely to go outside the budget.
but people at Xs arent the majority.
(ofc i only look at this from a Profit and market share point of view form ATi and Nvidia)

When Perkam says SLI-able, he means MGPU config with bridge(s), not an external dongle.

x1900 AIW is $199 and it is a X1900Xt with lower default clocks... must be faster than a 7900gs!

then ATI came with the dongle and now copys Nvidia.

We should build a time machine pick up ATIs PR team of a few years ago and show them ATIs new Crossfire solution.

Yep exactly agree. SLI was/is a far better design than Corssfire. That's why SLI is in laptops and Crossfire isn't. People who put in two 1900XTs in CF never got as many framerates as people woth two 7900 GTXs in SLI. Hopefully now the frames rates for CF will go up much more.

Dammit Perkham...Renaming my thread and confusing people.

I agree with ya'll about heat, but rgw rv570 die should hopefully be more competative to G71 than R580. Surely the 7900gs G71 will still be cooler than rv570, but it should be much better than the R580 in the x1900gt. I also think StarScream made a lot of good points that can't be denied if you look at the market in general. The thing is, we arn't the market in general, as you noted.

nah there are games i were crossfire is able to use most of its power and outdoes an SLI combo.
And the reason we dont have Laptop Corssfire yet is i think mostly cause either ATIs mobile GPUs arent designed for crossfire or they simply havent pushed it yet (market for it isnt big anyway).

and ya for the eye an bridge is nicer then a dongle.

btw anyone help me with building a time machine?
