Cooling doesn't matter. The most commonly argued theory is that voltage alone without the help of heat or frequency will break down the dielectric gates over time.

Also keep in mind that the DFI SLI-DR boards come up with 0.025 volts more than you set in the BIOS when the CPU is busy. I measured that on several instances yesterday, the effect is for real. Luckily my Infinity doesn't show any of that.

is that true of the Expert boards as well?

Don't know. I only have a SLI-DR and just bought an Infinity SLI.

how short of a life do you think a 4400 will have using 1.55v 24/7? now youve got me worried......

Nobody has any hard data on this, at least nobody outside the chipmakers. You can try to gain some estimates from general EE journal articles but that won't get you far either.

but i mean a normal cpu might last for 15 years or more correct? i mean with proper cooling and no overclocking or overvolting........... so if the default vcore of a 4400 is 1.35v then 1.55v is about a 15% overvolt. I guess thats a lot but its not a ridiculous amount. I mean normal tolerances allow for +/- 5% usually anyway. do you really think It would shorten the life by a drastic amount? I would hope that the chip will last at least 3 years, because by then I would have gotten a new cpu anyway.....

Well, as I said, nobody has any data on it. Personally I expect it not to be a drastic reduction of lifespan, certainly still worth the extra performance for less money. But this is simply a guts statement.

I also think that you should use 1.4 V as a base for your calculations for all AMD64 E revision CPUs.

yeah 1.35-1.40 is what AMD has on their site so I guess you can use 1.40. My asus sets it to 1.35 if I use "CPU Default". I think maybe the Optys get an additional 0.05 for some reason.

On another note when I was browsing the AMD site, I found there are apparently 2 different variants of E6 4400+ :

    http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desk...=ADV4400DAA6CD

    http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desk...=ADA4400DAA6CD

So one is an "ADA4400DAA6CD" and the other is a "ADV4400DAA6CD". What is the difference? I see one is 110W and the other is only 89W. Can someone tell me about these?

Martin are you saying you see + 0.025 from what bios reports or supposed to deliver

623-2 bios ....ie I have my vcore at 1.35*110%=1.485v...bios reports 1.46v

so I am giving the chip bios setting1.51v(1.485+ 0.025) or bios vcore reading1.485(1.46 +0.025)

early reports were a little higher at DFI street 0.05-0.1

this is a real concern as I really have no idea what the chip is getting....

man how the heck did you get a 0530TPMW
do you guys think newegg resells OEM cpus that come back from RMA or do they send them back to AMD? im just wondering trying to speculate where the heck this chip came from.

Ji 4Tze did it look used at all when you got it? any scratches or anything on the IHS? did you see any evidence of prior installation (heatsink grease etc)? very odd

LuckMan212 - that was a critical assumption and i figured out that much smaller portion of buyers is taking OEM version, most of them will go for BOX/Retail and that there is a better chance to get good stepping (like 30. week) with OEM package. It's working good for me, two 2.7GHz cores vs. one 2.7GHz Venice got me ~90% gain with rendering, I'm more than pleased. Just hope that MOSFETs will not burn out since they tend to heat up quite a bit in full CPU load (can't hold my fingertip more than 5s on them or capacitors).

Ivan - no, it's a scene from evermotion.org forum, this classroom scene was something like a testbed for GI renderers.

Hey, so I got a 170 (0543 TPMW) a few days ago. I'd really like a 0530, how do you guys go about this situation?

HMM..I have not seen a ecent 170 0530 hit 3Ghz(at least on air)..most reporting 2700-2800..which is nice 30-40% overclock but by %my opty 165 @>45% is doing better..I just can not get 2700...my goal...

Are you sure? I could have sworn I've been seeing the 170 0530 hit 2950 or higher very often on this thread?

That kind of speed not attainable with air or water. Well you can, but most likely it wont be stable. You gotta freeze it.

Just wanted to post pictures of my stable 2,750MHz. It is also 3D stable since I've played Battlefield 2 online with it for many hours.

    What about this one?

I saw a few others too, I thought it was 0530 hitting roughly 3000 and the rest finding between 2700-2800.

got my Opty170 (0546) running 2600 (vcore=1.50) on stock cooling - dunno if that is good or bad..?
Noticed that the cpu temp rarely goes above 50C under full load on both cores...so was wondering if temps are limiting my overclock or is it just the chip that maxes out at around 2.6?
Gonna move it to watercooling soon to see if that helps, but have my doubts...

thats not a good overclocker, you should be under that
im currently trying to get stable with my 170 at 2600 1.45, so close

"should be under"? ...so my OC IS ok then?
    Is temps an issue?
And how much voltage can these chips handle?...
