    naked w3520

    almost there at last!

    my high-tech holding tool

nearly done, still need to get rid of a thin copper layer and the solder

at first i didn't want to remove the copper surrounding but i removed it after all

    done!, will it boot?

of course it still works, i can't believe you doubted

the IHS have been sanded down totally using power tools, the only problem is the heat generated by the sanding action.

I've tried everything i had under the hand:

Belt sander > generated lots of heat, probably the worst of them all, but the sandpaper was done and didn't bother changing it to see if it helped.

Grinder/flapdisc > did 80% of the job with this, generates LOTS of heat. 20sec sanding/2minutes off

8" disc sander > with 60 grit that thing works really good, no to be used toward the end tho, or with very little pressure

orbital sander > than thing amazed me, even with gritty sandpaper it doesn't leave a mark and doesn't generates heats like the other tools. you can literally sand without stopping. But it's slow compared to the hardcore sanders
Next time i lap a CPU i'll use this to get the top off and finish by hand

hand> works good as usual but not fast enough for me

    why i did this?
just for the hell of it
cpu is damaged, but still works see sig for what it can do, but can't stay on without a bsod for a more than a few hours in a row. He deserved some punishments after so many hassle

don't try this at home, dangerous procedure!

    Nice job!
How come it is damaged, though?

    That is insane dude!!

I would like to know how it got damaged in the first place also?

The die on these chips is quite large.. though the only chips that I have seen without IHS is the old Athlons..

i don't know what happened to this CPU, but it's messed up

i'm explaining more in details what it does here > http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=231367
short story is, i changed every pieces of hardware and still had those bsod, changed the cpu, and wokring flawless since that.
I, like most of you never thought about a faulty CPU when having bsod. But eventually it came clear it was the cause

i didn't played with it much yet, it was geting late yesterday
I didn't do it for temps because it can't be a 24/7 chip anymore. It's running on AIR into the BR and I can't really compare because i never run this cpu on air before
But i plan to put that biatch under dice for sure I'll come up with some kind of spacer to absorb some of the weight of the CPU pot. Especially if my "new" w3520 can't reach the same OC under cold. If my new one can match this one under cold i'll be more than happy

I wonder.. how much it can help with air cooling and i7 920 C0? I know that i7 doesnt scale with temp.. but still.

Depending on the particular IHS, sanding it to half-height will give you best temps on AIR, but you will lose the retention off the cpu and have to be careful with mounting it. Sanding it all the way to the die won't gain anything according to my research and for me it worsened temps by cca 1 degree, but temp spread was different.
Sometimes a good slap in the face is all you need

I can fix this problem with a hardware mod....

temps looks to be normal if not worst for air, idk i never run this i7 on air before
i admit that mounting the cooler to get a perfect mount is a . Each time i reseat it i get differrent temps on different cores

like i said i didn't do it for temps, and i wouldn't do it for a daily clocker, not worth it.

here's 2 screen i made, without anyform of comparaison it doesn't tell much

Nickel plated copper if I'm not mistaking

ALU would take only a few minutes to sand off

it was with a true and a 120mm fan on the mobo blowing some air into it

    yes it's full copper plated

the remaining copper is really easy to remove once you have the top off, just use a thin blade to carefully cut the glue under. It's really soft and easy to remove.

umm isnt the True 120 a push pin locking system? your not going to get anywhere near enough contact force with the reduced processor height i imagine, i would try it with a cooling solution that uses adjustible spring applied tension...

i'm not using the orignal mounting, and it's screws with springs not pins
    i'm using right tru bolts
