Damn thats a bummer. I was thinking about removing the IHS on my 6400+ BE for the chance of lower voltages with lower heat. Not sure if I should give it a shot or not.

I think lapping the IHS would be a safer idea. You can still get down very thin without running the risk of crushing the chip.

That's beyond naked. Was it a 9600 BE? What killed it in the first place?

I wouldn't say soldered, very likely looks like a heat activated glue pad. Either way it wouldn't make it any easier, you'd still have to find a way to introduce an even heat, hot enough to deactivate the solder/glue/epoxy without frying the chip.

Yeah, I saw one a while ago posted online comparing Intels MCM with AMD Native, but that showed the cores cleanly without heatspreader..

It's not intended to be taken off - why would AMD be bad?
btw FYI Intel has been doing this for longer period.

I think AMD shoudn't solder indeed.

From one point if view it's understandable, people can crush a core way sooner if they remove the IHS.

On the otherhand, which fool would RMA his CPU without IHS because the core is crushed and except a new one... As soon as the IHS is removed it's very obviously so the increased chance of broken CPU's wouldn't cost AMD any RMA stuff. Actually, people would buy a new one so it's only better

@ BrokenWall, 6400+'s are soldered too! Not sure but I think almost all AM2 X2's are soldered.

    [EDIT]
Just saw the pic, looks like glue pad yeah. Like used on RAM heatspreaders whicxh tend to rip off IC's. If another one dies, try to heat it and take it off :P

Bah. Pansies. CPUs don't need the silicon die to run, they just need MOAR JIGGAWATTS.

    How come?

What error is it showing (does it start briefly and then keep restarting before POST)?
Is it by pushing 1.8V into it trying to match early review oc's?

I heard ovens work perfectly fine for baking dead CPUs...no really

If you're wanting to take top off, it looks solid glued that won't weaken off till plus 150C, some heat gun exposure and then dipping it in acetone based nail polish remover will weaken that adhesive quite a lot. I used to use Z-7 Debonder after this to totally get rid of it, softens it up and lets you sludge it off. You'd need to dip it in there whilst hot though.

i took the soldered head off mine x2 and it still runs, but not any better then before, no better temps as well...

if you want i can post pictures of the process, looks horrible

as far as i know only the f3 windsor are soldered.. and i think its good as it really optimizes the heat transfer... as long as the ihs are even.. but this way amd is better off then intel..

Better tell me how you unsoldered the top

BTW the oven idea sounds cool - need to make a retention so the HS will just fall off when it's ready

Actually this solder is really soft - I can remove it from HS with my nail

used a small heatsink, put it onto the cpu's top with as5 and then burnt it with a pocket soldering torch..

before you have to cut the glue and then use 4 razor blades stuck under the ihs to hold the cpu such that it can fall down when the solder is melted..

it melts the moment you really think now your cpu is burnt to dead..

Gently cut the epoxy all the way around.....Then get acookie pan and heat it up on a stove burner say 350 to 400 should do it...

Put on lots of thermal paste on IHS and then holding sides of the PCB with Long Plyers/BarBq Prongs work too IHS DOWN set it to the Pan...The IHS should fall off in about two/three seconds...make shure yo pull it straight up and then turn upright so heat can rise away from core....Clean up excess solder with razor very carefully...

Note: do not spill Beer on hot chip or use breath to blow on hot chip ..Whereass you can crack the Core....dOnT AsK
