E6600 @ 3GHz idle @ 71°C ->WTF??

Hi,

I just pushed my E6600 from FSB266 to FSB333 and from 1.325 to 1.4 Vcore. I'm on air cooling with a Scythe Mine and Everest and CoreTemp show me about 71°C idle!

Perhaps there's something wrong with the cooler? I already disabled the CPU Q-Fan control...

Plz help, I'm afraid of frying my brand-new C2D

Touch the heatsink. If you burn your fingers its prolly 60-70.

bad contact?, is fan spinning, and the kicker, did you remove the plastic coating on the Mine (I know I didnt at first and experience your exact situation.) Also theres some black caps on the inductors on the edge of the board, that seem to interfere with the base of the mine, check to see clearance.

Try remounting your heatsink, if that doesn't change temps, ignore them. Few of us really trust coretemp, it reports temps way too high IMO.

core temp gives me 60c idle 65c loaded, its 25c too high for me than actual temps which are in the high 30's

you probably need to lap your IHS. If you use a heatsink that covers the entire IHS surface from edge to edge, then consider lapping the IHS.

A mistake people make is putting a rice sized grain of AS5 on the IHS when mounting their heatsink and assuming everything will be fine. To test to see if your IHS is concave and needs to be lapped, spread a very thin layer of AS5 on the heatsink, mount it, remove it, and see where there is contact with the CPU.

If it's just on the outside edges, you have a concave surface and need to lap it. Happened to me. Lapped mine... load temps dropped 15 degrees.

What mb have you got? Bad Axe is known for reporting temps way higher than they are.

I definitely removed that blue plastic under the HS. I'll remount it tomorrow and see if the thermal grease covered the die completely and then check if anything interferes with the HS! The damn thing is that the HS is that big that I a) can't mount it on the unmounted mobo and b) can't see anything in the upper area around the socket (when mobo is mounted in case)...

For the moment I reduced vcore to default and I think the temp of 60°C idle now is ok, since a couple of other guys got the same strange temps (as you said). Priming over night will see if it's stable at stock vcore...

I think all stepping 5 cpu's are out in comparison to stepping 6 retail. I think mine are out by + 10 degrees (stepping 5).

B2 stepping E6600 running at 3Ghz here aswell. Around 50C with a CNPS9500 running at only 1700rpm instead of 2900rpm. So I bet its your cooler thats the problem or contact. Even with 1.45V I dont go beyond 60C.

Also dont worry about your CPU, it will trottle unless you disabled it.
Do you have C1E/EIST on? If so the idle temp is just even worse.

purely depends on what stress apps you run...
try S&M short cpu test @ 100%load with 1,45 and let us know again..

cause mine (B2 6600) hits 62+c during that test (3GHZ/1,45V)
outside a case... with tAmb~ 25C

rite now i'm using ninja and while running orthos, speedfan 4.29 report my temp as 55C while CoreTemp report the temp as 65c.

i believe i have a concave ihs, but i'm not sure bout lapping it since i will lose all the marks on the processor and since mine is retail, surely it'll CLEARLY void the warranty (yeah i know we're at XS :p)

I had 7 here just and all were shocking! Have sent a stinking e-mail to Intel about it as i don;t see why i should have to sort them out to geta working system and safe temp!

Intel could have these concave IHS designs done purposely, encouraging those who overclock to lap the heatsink, thus voiding the warranty. Save them a bit of money from having to deal with dead chips due to overclocking.

Their heatsink design is what makes me think that, as it doesn't cover the edges of the IHS, where the problem is. Whatever though.
