Morning gentlemen. Today I come baring gifts After much research into why both my HD4830s become massively unstable in CF I isolated the problem to the BIOS on the HD4830s. This shouldn't come as a surprise.. XFX suck. Anyway, with the problem eliminated I thought I would share my modified HD4830 BIOS with other XFX HD4830 owners, and those who just want to mess around a bit.
Notes;
- No more BSODs / random VPU recovery messages when overclocked and in CF.
- This BIOS should work on all Wekiva B50102 boards (some Asus, XFX), if you use this BIOS on Wekiva B50110 boards or any other HD4830 varying Wekiva boards it would be interesting to know how it works out.
- New Signature has been injected in the BIOS. The new signature changes Overdrive limits to 750MHz core, 1100MHz memory. I think this is a perfect balance, many manufacturers overcook memory limits (1200) and undercook GPU limits (650-700)
- (for me) Better GPU overclocking. I could only do 680MHz on the stock XFX BIOS and that was just single card. Now I can do 730MHz on the GPU, memory I haven't tested yet so is on the books as unchanged atm (1025MHz)
- Power saving now works properly. Yet another borked feature from XFX, what quality Anyway, as power saving features now actually work and don't make the card go on the fritz when you underclock it for desktop use, the clocks have been changed to 325MHz, and 500MHz core / memory respectively.
- Voltages changed to 1.25v. This is a flatline across all clock frequencies, I haven't tested using, say, 1.05v for desktop, but I'm sure it would work fine and you can easily adjust this yourself with RBE.
- Fan ramp curve adjusted. The ramping has been adjusted to a gentle curve, so its as least offending on the ears as possible as and when the fan needs to ramp up.
Obviously before flashing uninstall the Catalyst drivers and CCC.
How to flash this BIOS:
You will need to make a bootable floppy / USB stick / CD / DVD, whichever takes your fancy, and place the BIOS and ATIflash on your selected media of choice. From pure DOS, type ATIFLASH.EXE -f -p 0 A4830NS1.ROM and press enter. Wait for the message to say the BIOS flash is complete, and restart.
Lastly for those wondering, I done a single card Vantage run and at 730 / 2.05 (effective), I got a score of 8500ish, not too shabby.
Just done some more testing with one of the HD4830s, heres the result I got in Vantage @ 730/2.2. 100% certified this BIOS allows me to clock +50MHz on the core and memory
