Cat 6.6 = No dongle, no bridge Xfire up to X1900GT

For those that think Crossfire (and SLI) are where it's at news is that Catalyst version 6.6 (next release) will make Crossfire possible without need for master card or dongle/bridge up to a X1900GT (which means necessarily everything but the X1900 XT/X):

Oooh tasty! Now I can get another X1800XT seeing as they are so cheap right now
<eMesreveR>Do "girls" ever appear outside the Internet? Can i randomly encounter them?
<Aleph-One>I believe they are a fabrication. Most of the evidence would suggest that they were created in a studio during the Cold War to display our industrial superiority over the Soviet Union.

what about improvements for last gen cards

any ideas on release? ive come to learn, that ati driver releases are nothing like nvidias, always a perfomance upgrade, and something new for last gen users.

Sorry but if there's no dongle nor bridge, which thing is needed in a CF board that isn't in a SLI board?

Or said inversely, which prevents 2xX1900GT from running in my SLI-DR?

What if you change device ID of an X1900XT(X) in the bios to X1900GT? Should be interesting to see what kind of performance hit it takes with such powerul cards.

I believe you'll still need a crossfire board, correct? This was mentioned higher up in the thread. Anways, this is really nice. I was wondering if they would ever do this (eliminating the need for master cards through implementing it into their drivers). It's certainly a logical move for ATI, just makes their crossfire solution simpler.

This is always good to hear, especially for current x1800 owners.

This certainly makes a couple of configs such as dual x1800xts or unlockable HIS x1800gtos seem like a good deal. It also at this moment makes crossfire now look like now like a nice option compared to a single more expensive single card.
    That is all.

    Peace and love.

    Yes, but my question is:

If now you don't need (up to X1900GT) dongle or bridge, what's in a CF board that isn't in a SLI one.

What I really mean is, as fcg said in a thread, I think it's only something in the drivers that prevents SLI in CF boards and CF in SLI boards. And the bridge/dongle thing is now proved as only an excuse.

Ahhh, I understand now. I hadn't really thought about that before, but that definitely arises an interesting point. Only incompatibility I can think of is drivers, but maybe I'm missing something.

Hicks, the jury is still out on that 1 due to the vague wording of the statement. It could mean everything up to X1900GT, ie X1300 X1600 X1800XL X1800GT X1800XT X1800XTX X1900GT, or it could mean everything up to GT level in each series.

is there anything in sli boards that isn´t in CF-boards???

on motherboard-site it changes nothing, same restrictions by drivers, i believe that it´s only a matter of time to see crossfire running in nvidia boards as some of us are running sli in intel and ati boards

The only reason for them not being cross-compatible is drivers. Both Catalyst and Forceware run a check to see if the motherboard is crossfire/SLI enabled and if it isn't the right brand then it won't work in dual gfx mode. Of course there are probably ways around it but I recon that you'd need some serious coding skillz to work it out

And who's to say this means no dongle but still needs a mastercard?
