Asus P5K Deluxe or Striker Extreme?

Like the thread title suggests i need help on which mother board i should buy, I will be upgrading from a DS3 with an E6600, 2gb G.Skill 2GBHZ and a Gigabye 8600GTS. My plan is to do some overclocking with a Ultra120 Extreme and buy another 8600GTS. Which motherboard do you recommend?

want SLI go 680i. 9 x 400 isnt hard for a E6600, and the 680i has exceptional ram overclocking possibilities.

if you stick with a single card, and want the highest easy OC potential, the P5K would be best.

P5K-dx supports crossfire but not SLI. 4ghz is a little too optimistic with an air cooler, granted a TL Ultra 120 Extreme. 3.6 tops is what you should expect for 24/7 use

680i memory controller isn't superior by far it's even slower at stock speeds than the Intel chipsets... it has better and is easier to set ram speed indeed but even with the fixed dividers of the P5K you achieve same great speed too... you just need a good set of ram for both if you want to achieve high bandwiths...

Secondly 680i boards have evolved , but they are stil very hard to setup and can damage hardware very easily, if you are not really into digging into 100 page threads and a bios optimizer aka wizard opt for the Intel chipsets man...

Also man SLI with 8600GTS is worth nothing in fact it's a waste of money, better buy directly a 8800 GTS card, which will perform faster then 2 of those 8600GTS', or you can buy an EVGA 8600GTS and do do the step up in the 90 days

So to sum it all up, if you need SLI (plz not with the 8600GTS card) go for 680i, if not required go 200% for the P5K Dlx...

If you really need 4ghz wait for the upcoming 50 series CPU's around July, 3.8 or even 4ghz of you are lucky is doable then, at much lower volts than now....

screens have been taken of a penryn sample running on a 680i chipset...but whether a suitable bios becomes available to support actual retail penryn chippies on 680i is yet to be seen/proven. seeing is believing. i 'll believe it when i see someone go to the shops in late 07 and show test results of a penryn working on a 680i.


...and as for the 8600gts gefArce.
8800ultra>8800gtX>x2900xt>8800gts>x1950xt>x1950pro > 8600gts.

i hope it does, that would be sick for sure!!! and i would say good job for nvidia, intel even had to update their own chip to work with their new cpu, if nvidia doesnt that is something else/

well what if i save and get 2 8800gts, is it worth it then to get the striker? Or get a P5K with x1950pro crossfire?

depending what res can ya monitor handle ? if you do not intend to game at eg 1600 x 1200 SLI is really not worth it , even so 2 gts models cost a lot more than a GTX. So you better go with one powerfull card and leave SLI or even Crossfire alone... It's a nice feature SLI but I think it's more a show off then a real gaming necessity....

If you do most of your gaming at 1280 x 1024 one powerfull card is the way to go ....

i have 22" widescreen, native res of 1680x1050 and i would like to be able to play most games with really high settings at that res, so should i get SLI 8800gts 320mb or 1 8800gtx?

at that res forget 320mb, 640 mb will be the cards you need, as the 320 drops too much in performance at high resolutions...
I would get one GTS 640mb and test it out , maybe settle in some games at 1280 x 1024 gaming at high detail, you can add a second card later on if the prices drop when the 8900 will be out end of this year or so....

8800gts320 -> gts640 -> x2900xt -> gtX -> price & performance ascending.

I bought a Striker Extreme 1.00G that wouldn't POST with RAM over 667 and still failed Orthos.
RMAed...
Replacement Striker Extreme 1.00G was dead-on-arrival.

So I'm rather unhappy with Striker Extremes.

What would you folks recommend?
A different 680i? EVGA? I do have 2x 8800GTXs I'd like to use.
Perhaps a p35?
Wait for a p38?

Bad luck Zero there, pretty happy with mine thx to Eva2000's and Raju's tips...

If you don't need SLI you will be pretty happy with a P35 and some nice DDR2ram , DDR 3 version seems to expensive for the current performance benefit...but like you said with 2 x 8800GTX maybe an EVGA latest rev is a good option....

I had both striker and p5k deluxe.

I don't know why everyone's saying the 680i mem controller is so much better cuz my ram clocked way better on my p5k than the striker.

But as everyone else said if you NEED sli then go striker otherwise just stick with the p5k deluxe

only one way to go then, get an EVGA latest rev board then or the latest DFI release 680Lt... I'm pretty happy with my striker but I don't do 4 gigs nor Raid or any fancy stuff... just choose ya ram wisely and it will be fine..

I could confirm for today that Pendryn/Wolfdale cores are supported by current generation nF680i motherboards (reference and striker as well).

But as CPU specs could be changed before NDA, - this could be changed as well.

Still haven't installed 1202 bios , very keen to do so when I get home some testing to do as some peeps have inferior performance on eg aquamark and 3dmarks with this bios...
