I think Greyskull owes us a little explanation here. I don't think it's right to show these cards true potential under extreme cooling via Sampsa & macci if every other bencher cannot even run a retail card under -0°

I'm sorry to take your thread off topic Sampsa but this is something that needs to be addressed.

It's a nice card. does around 720-830 def. volts with cool air blowing on the card and I know it has a ton of potential for xtreme stuff. Grayskull has been responsive to my pm's so no complaints there really . Just no solutions yet. I really want to let er' rip.

Several people have contacted me and asked about cold problems with Radeon X1800 XT. I haven't had any but apparently everyone else is having them with retail cards. I've used beta-drivers so far and haven't tested overclocking with Catalyst 5.11. It can be the card itself, drivers or a bios. I'll have to ask this directly from ATI.

Radeon X1800 CrossFire Edition in 2-3 weeks? We'll see..

    Sampsa,

I know your a busy guy but if you had a minute to test the Cat 5.11's that might help us find an answer to this problem.

    Thanks,

Well .... yes is far better than XL cooler .. XT is a mixed bag for me.
Idle and most load are better, but playing FEAR which really pushes my temp up, the Zalman runs at about 4-5 deg more.
The major problem with the stock cooler, is even when its not spun up, its got a whine to it that gets on my nerves, especially as my tower is on the desktop.

I am considering getting the Zalman Fatal1ty, as its all copper (mine has a copper centre strip and the rest aluminium), AND it runs a faster fan speed.
That will mean more noise, but if its a whoosh instead of a whine, thats bearable
I can also plug a fanmate inline for a bit more control.

Really ? .. well I feel better now TBH getting 725 from the core is fine, just a tad dissapointed I can't get the memory to 800 on the XT, but thats life

I got myself the Zalman Fatal1ty. It looks sweet, red heatsink, red ram chips and red led on the fan

It also much quiter than the XL cooler which also drove me mad.

I thought the XL cooler was noisy ... but in comparison to the XT one its a :banana::banana::banana::banana:cat !
Anyone know what the maximum is for the core temp before it starts to throttle ?

    Serious! Thats shocking
If thats the case then the zalman is definitly better.

Im not sure about the throttling tho. My guess is above 70c.

80's would be my guess since thermal throttle is 88C or something around that.

    Edit: Ment throttle

The thermal limit must be higher than that, thats very low for a GPU ... IIRC X800/GTX are around 115 ?

    Ment throttling point, my bad.

My X800Pro that I had would freeze, shutdown, lockup, do VPU recovery what ever it needed to do if it hit 82C.

Ah, well this has been up to 85 playing FEAR for a couple of hours .. no problems ... TBH I am not sure its reported correctly, as the card and HS were not hot to the touch, and the stock cooler still hits 80 without ramping the speed up from normal gaming mode ... but to play it safe I have a Zalman Fatal1ty on the way

Well, if its cool to the touch the HSF might not be making proper contact.
BTW 80c is still acceptable. I remember ATi saying that the x800 series could run into 90c and be safe.

Yeah, I think its not in danger until it hits over 100 TBH.
Fatal1ty fitted, and I plugged a fanmate inline just to take the edge of full speed, even at full speed its a damn site less annoying than the whine of the stock solution ... and temps now are down by 8 deg load compared to the alcu version, 10 deg less if I run the fan full speed.

I did make up a patch lead to run the Fattal1ty from the card (and making use of thermal control) but that underpowers it a bit.

Yup, the Fatal1ty is pleasing to the ears compared to the stock cooler.
I would get it for that alone.

The black power connector is the 12V right? I'm just making sure i connected mine to run at full rpm.

    Yep, black=12v white=5v
I am actually just trying a new method ...
I have plugged the Fatal1ty to the mobo on a connector that is run with cpu temp ... the theory being all games use the cpu so when that hits a certain temp the fans will spin up to cool it down, also spinning up the graphics card fan, but while the cpu is not being worked, then the cpu and gpu coolers are running slower and quieter.
The only downside to that is I cant get my bios to up the fan speeds at any lower than 51 deg cpu temp ... and even running prime atm, its only hitting 49.
As I have just been trying to heat up the GPU by running benchies and playing fear ... and only succeded in maxing at 77 deg on 5v with the Fatal1ty ... it looks pretty safe.
I am keeping a watchfull eye on the GPU temps and see what happens ... but it looks like even 5v is enough to match the stock cooler ... and in virtual silence too

the cpu temp never gets high enough to wind up the fans atm ... so I have it on a fanmate running 3100rpm, I found that to be a nice compromise between noise and cooling.

Pretty poor as those overclocks are on the edge for all my hardware .. but it looks like I got a poor clocking XT to match my CPU
