    7900GT artifacts, replacement with gt620?

    Hello,

I have an old nvidia 7900gt 512mb and it started showing artifacts. I am thinking of replacing it with a new low-end nvidia gt620. I have researched about gt620 and they say that has poor performance.

I want to ask if the performance will be better than my old 7900gt card. I don't want a high-end card because of the cap of the rest system(Athlon X2 4800 dual core, 2gb ram)

Because the 7900GT is such an old card, it is hard to find a comparison, but I think that the 7900GT is probably a little bit better. According to the futuremark site the 7900GT gets about 6500 points in 3Dmark06 and the GT620 5500 points. Unfortunatly there is no information how they do in newer benchmarks.

I would try to get a slightly better model if I were you.

Maybe you should look at some ATI offerings like a HD6670. I believe ATI offers some better cards in the lower/mid end category cards, but I don't know much about this segment or ATI. Someone else can hopefully comment on this.

Also, you should try to bake you 7900GT in the oven before writing it of. I fixed some old cards that gave artifacts like this.
Remove everything you can from the card (all heatsinks/rings/thermalpads) and put it in the over at 200C for 8 min or so. Be careful not to touch any components when its hot and preferable test it in a PC that is not important to you before trying it in your main computer. And of couse this is on your own risk

Sure it is, but the more I research i find more alternatives.
People suggest the HD6770 over the GTS450. Both have the same price.

Do you have any opinion about the HD6770?

I don't know where you are buying from, but it seems that the HD6770 is faster in some games and a little bit slower in others than the GTS450. If they are the same price for you, the HD6770 might be the better buy.

to be completely honest you need to get at least a mid range card or you will be sad. you system is old but the cpu dose not mean much when you are looking at IGP class or low end cards.

    i would get a 6850 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102908 or 560 se http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130770

those are a little over a hounded but if you go lower you will not be happy as it is a steep drop off and the 550 that is not gimped is the same price and so is the 67xx.
