Joining GPUGrid the easy way

Stick with one of the 6.12 versions (I'm running 6.12.34 which was the last "stable" release) as the 6.13 are the start of a complete re-write and have had many probems, especially in the GPU areas.

In the newer versions of Boinc Manager (6.12.x) the message are nw in the "Event Log" wich can be found as the last item on the "Advanced" menu.

Please keep in mind that if you are only connected to GPUGrid I think you will still get this message as they do not yet support ATI cards.

While BOINC Manager should recognize FireStream dirvers it is p[ossible that it does not but that's just speulation on my part.

I'm planning on rolling back to 6.12.xx

I can copy/paste the event logs but they're going to show pretty much "No usable GPU found."

Note on the GT240. This card presently works on most setups, but it does not perform as well with the more recent 6.14 and 6.15 apps. It is expected that CC1.1 and CC1.2 cards (such as the GT240) will no longer be usable whenever a CUDA 4.1 app is introduced. The GT240 has therefore been moved off the recommended list. Ditto for other CC1.2 cards such as the GT340.

The GT240 was a good card for the earlier 6.05 and 6.12 apps. These were replaced with the 6.13 app and then the 6.14 and 6.15 apps because Fermi cards would not work on the earlier apps. Apps tend to be upgraded to introduce support for new cards and improve performance for high end cards. The project can only support 2 apps.

*The Tesla and Quadro cards are very expensive compared to the GeForce cards, so these are only really applicable to business users.
Any mobile cards are recommended rather than highly recommended because they could cause heat issues with the notebook - it's up to you to determine if you want to use them or not. Only CC2.0 cards are Highly Recommended.

The Highly Recommended cards are most suitable for the long tasks. Other cards will also run them, but you should reconsider your system usage and Boinc cache settings.
Non-recommended cards should not be used with long tasks.

No, Quadros have the advantage of more VRAM and better double precision, but since this particular application is single precision and designed to fit in the RAM on consumer cards, these benefits are moot.

Then it has no use, just read on the Gpugrind.net website forum that AMD/ATI Cards are not gonna do anything.... so if someone has some Nvidia cards laying around doing nothing...my ATI cards will be back on the market and i'll go look for some Nvidia cards...

Idk about a 580, but my 570 at stock speeds will net just south of 160K ppd. I know - stock, but it's not really mine so yeah...

As far as we can tell, next to nothing. It's well within the variation caused by the different WCG projects themselves.

Unless you're running something crazy like 4+ GPUs per mobo, I'd be shocked if you could notice the difference in performance.

Might let someone else chime in and confirm, but I ran 2 GTX 260s on a 920 with no noticeable difference... and a single 470 on a 2600k- same thing.

yup it uses at most 2%-5% of one CPU core/thread most of the time

Third chime .... GPUGrid does a good job of processing on the GPU and leaving your CPU for WCG
Just don't sign up for the betas at this time as they are still working out a few things but it looks like we're going to get another 10% (at least) improvement.

Hey guys, need some help.....

I re-installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 and BOINC 7.0.25 (x64), then installed latest WHQL nVidia 301.42 drivers. Now it says "No usable GPUs found"

On my other rig with a GTX470, Windows Server 2008 R2 and nVidia 275.33 I get the same thing - "No usable GPUs found". Not sure how to resolve this?

Did you install Boinc as a service? If so, it will not recognise any gpu's with W7.

OK Snow Crash, here I am. Thank you for the invite. I am currently working with the Pre-Release 7.0.58. Is that a problem? The GPUGrid.net showed Download and install the recommended BOINC client (6.12.34) as recommended but not required.

Since the imaged procedural Post above is a few years old, I've got a few questions.

I am currently supporting WCG. Am I suppose to reinstall BOINC over my current release so that I can Add Project rather than replace WCG with GPUCrid.net or is there a way of adding a Project without reinstalling the software.

I am migrating to 7770 GPUs. Is that a problem? I just looked at http://www.gpugrid.net/ and saw where they support both NV and ATI. One question answered.

As I'm sure you know, WCG has a web page the provides a Team with a weekly Point and Result listing.
