@ LennyRhys: You have 680i chipset based mobo, i've not heard good things about that chipset, try 750i EVGA FTW if possible. a friend had one and he was very pleased with it, he had Q9550 quaddy.

SO who actually cares except the few fighting about who has a better CPU???????? You all are pretty much fighting over something that does not actually matter. The person that started this thread just wanted your opinions not your stupid comments on whose is better and blah blah so come on and drop the egos. Give up, dual cores are good and so are quads. I have had both and I love both.

SO CAN WE ALL JUST DROP IT NOW????

Wow just wow. I am just laughing now. I am in agreement with HuffPCair. This should of ended pages ago.
As far as CPUs go; Duals, Quads, and yes even single cores all have their place. Its just what you want to do with you PC.

    Will a E8500@ 4.1ghz to a Quad Core at 4 ghz + be a big jump

Are there any quads that do 4.5ghz on simple water setups?

Good for you! But I don't think you'll surprise many people with your findings...

To the OP, return that cpu!... yes that one. Now, save for another month, get a Q9550 and overclock it to 4.250Ghz, no dualcore can touch it.

question regarding Quads, i am in the market to move away from my E6600 and into a quad but with all the different options available right now is kind of hard to choose, i don't need something extreme just something to revitalize this system to hold together for a bit longer until their iron the kinks out of the i7 platform.

So my questions is what would be the difference between a Q6600(OCed) and a Q9550(possible OCed also) i know that the Q66 is a 1066 FSB vs 1333 FSB in the Q95 but once you OC it, don't you also OC the FSB therefore nullify said difference , would the extra cache in the Q95 warrant the extra $125 difference in price again i am not talkign about who will have more 3dmark points but when it comes down to real world performance.

my system is currently a E6600,Asus P5B-DLX,Dominator 8500, and aX1950 XTX(FYI everything is WCed), have a new 4870 1GB coming to replace the X1950 so now all i need is a new CPU to finish the deal.

My system is mainly used for watching movies(blue ray included) and gaming, but my gaming is nothing that is EXTREME(no crysis or anything like that) just an MMO called LOTRO, so what would be the best way to go about upgrating this cpu.

I had that CPU as well, except OC'd to 350x9 because lowering the multi and raise the FSB doesn't do jack in terms of performance but!

I pretty much do what you do as well and "I" thought it was going to make a HUGE difference going from Dual to Quad but it hasn't that much.

Now, I don't regret getting the Q6600 but it's definitely worth getting a Quad, because I plan on keeping this system for 3 years, so a high-end video card would not cripple the CPU power in the future....

I'd say keep your current set up because the difference may or may not be noticeable to you but if you're willing to shell out $180 for a Q6600? Then go for it.

As for the 45nm (Q95s) CPU? They're a hair faster than then 65nm but then again, a Q9550 cost $315, a $125 difference........and back when I tried to go Quad, the difference in performance between the Q65 and Q95 wasn't worth the extra cash for me.............but it may to you so, it all depends how fat is your wallet and the will to gain speed.

BTW, P965 chipsets aren't that great with Quad 45nm CPUs, from what I've seen around here, a P45 chipset would be the ideal.

Is 3.2GHz as high as your E6600 will go?

As for the quad vs. quad comparison, the Q9550 is faster per clock, produces less heat per clock, has more cache, has a wider bus, and can clock higher 90% of the time. I'd take the Q9550 in a heartbeat; however, I'd wait until mid January because it's dropping substantially in price.

You won't see any difference in LOTRO going from your E6600 to either processor, and you obviously won't see any difference playing high-def movies, but you'll get way better encoding, decoding, compiling etc. How much of that actually takes up your time, I'm not sure.

For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.

for some odd reason yeah anything over 3.2 ghz will crash the system, and i am not talking prime95 crash, i mean crash as soon as you do anything(open firefox, or any other app)is a revision b2 stepping 6(if that matters) my main reason for moving to a new CPU is the concern for my current one holding back my new Asus DK 4870 1GB, which i have read it could be the case(maybe it was someone just saying stuff that is not actual truth). truth be told money is not an issue, i just hate getting rid of stuff that still "works" only reason i went and replaced the video card now is because blue ray takes a toll on the system with my x1950 since it does not support gpu based decoding, also since my x1950 XTX was one of the first revision by Diamond it didn't come with the chip for HDCP so up until now i have had to circumvent that by using anydvdHD to get rid of the HDCP handshake.

regarding the board stability i wouldn't even mind running the cpu on stock speeds if that were to be the case as long as it improve on what i have and is also "future proof"i have my eye on the DFI LP DK X-48 originaly was thinking of doing Asus Rampage Formula but the DFI has been praised as a more tolerant and user friendly board, i have been using asus board since the pII days so is about time to move into a new board manufacturer if for nothing else than for their pretty looks.

and again i don't do any encoding, rarely burn a dvd or anything else that could be somewhat extreme, so movies, gaming(limited) is what i am aiming for.

Edit as of last night for some odd reason my board won't OC at all so is back at running stock speeds which is hurting my overall performance(very noticeable i might add) so if you had to choose which board would be the most reasonable choice for Quad,ATI and DDR2
btw thanks for the quick feedback, XSF community really is the best!!
