GIGABYTE P67A UD5 + 2600k ....new platform, lot of fun

Are about few days I'm testing this beauty. The GIGABYTE p67 UD5, is quite the same of the UD7, the difference are just the lack of nf200 onboard, and there are just 3 pci-express slot instead 4:

    BIOS
    UTILITY
    MANUAL
    COMPANY PAGE

I'm using water cooling and I have to say this new baby is really another story besides Lynnfield.
With the Vcore on auto, the system is fully stable like that:

The water temperature is about 21 °C. During the vantage CPU test the CPU temp. never go over 47 °C

Setting the vcore @ 1,36 volt ( in the bios) the system is fully stable @ 4.5 G
The limit is given by the CPU architecture. The highest settable multiplier is 51. The motherboard allow to set until 90, but over 51 the system doesn't boot.

Setting vcore @ 1,5 volt from bios:

In that way the cpu temp during vantage cput is about 80 °C.
The system is fully stable, but i think is a little too much for a daily use.
In the next days i will try to push a little the bclock.

There's also only 1 NIC vs 2 and 6 sata slots vs 8 between the two. (the sata slots part matters to me at least)

How much vcore for 4.9GHz (49x100) and 5GHz (50x100) ? Looks like 4.9GHz or so is the max you'd wanna use vcore/clock frequency wise on that sample for 24/7 use.

I like the black & blue look - was considering MSI for the same reason....

Watching the reviews of P67 Sandy's for my next upgrade! Nice OC but want to see what the standard 2600 will do

Ya 6 isn't enough imo, the asus pro/deluxe have 8 and the asrock extreme6 has 10.

It depends. If you use 40x multiplier and you can put 106 bclk ( i think i've seen in previews or reviews ), then 6 * 40 = 240 mhz! But in extreme like 50x multiplier i don't know how stable will be if you have bclk over 100.

But yeah, bclk doesn't make any difference compared to X58 or P55 bclk

Ouch 4.2ghz gives it the same cpu score in Vantage as 4.6ghz on my 920.

Still that's like 10% clock difference only though, for a next gen CPU architecture the SB is still somewhat dissappointing from an IPC point of view. Power efficiency is brilliant though but I personally care more about the performance part. :p With OC benefit taken into account there's still a decent around 28~35% gain though, obviously only comparing with aircooling and looks like SB @ 4.8 ~ 5.0GHz or so might not draw more power than Lynnfield or Bloomfield at 4.0~4.2GHz or possibly slightly less even, haven't seen how it scales with voltage increase so quite difficult to predict.

    Yep, we need s2011.

I don't have big expectations for s2011 either, maybe 5% IPC increase but ofc there will be more cores but there's still rather few applications where more than 4 cores really benefit significantly from more cores but perhaps they will offer some workaround for bclk limitation at least so LN2 users can have some fun too. This time around I will actually wait and see what the other side has to offer even if I'm the kind of guy that often upgrades directly at a CPU launch for no real reason other than to be able to play with newer hardware cuz it's like a hobby. :p

How are you cooling your chipset with water on the CPU, & how hot does the chipset get?

I was reading the manual and found something that could be a problem for me. Wonder if someone could explain ...

On page 8 of the manual (the block diagram) it shows the first two PCI-E slots would be 8x each if you run CF/SLI. No problem. It also shows the PCI-E 4x slot (the last one) runs off the P67 chipset (imo separate from the PCI-E_1 and 2).

But then on page 10 it says under the PCEIX4:

"The PCIEX4 slot shares bandwidth with the PCIEX1_1 and PCIEX1_2 slots. When the PCIEX1_1 slot or the PCIEX1_2 slot is populated with an expansion card, the PCIEX4 slot will operate at up to x1 mode."

This would be a deal breaker for me and I haven't noticed this text or warning in any of the Asus P67 previews. If anyone could clear this up that be most helpful. As I obliviously can't be running my RAID card off a 1x bandwidth.

I think this is a limit of the hcipset architecture, but just my touight, i need to check better.
