No, your just down playing the issue. Furmark, while not a realistic program, is still a program. It is a program which can be run. This software program can make the gpu not work the way it is advertised. That is not acceptable. No software should be able to damage or prevent something working as advertised even at stock speeds. Furmark throttles it at stock. Is that acceptable? It's not the softwares fault for putting strenuous demands on the hardware, it's the hardwares fault for diminishing its capacity to run stably with these demands. If software never pushed hardware, we'd never advance. Is that ok with you to? What happens if a game comes out, that actually DOES throttle it? Is that not a normal program? Are you just stating Furmark isn't a legit program?

It is an issue. Just because it doesn't affect you doesn't lessen it.

I like AMD products more than Nvidia. The quality to me just seems to be higher and my nvidia card which isn't a year old is already starting to die. The fact I like them more than Nvidia, doesn't change the fact I apply criticism where its due. The fact is AMD/ATI was and is negligent in properly cooling the VRMs does not make us 'haters'. My last 4870 died because of the VRMs over heating. This is not a software issue, it's a hardware issue.

This was already an issue with the 4800 series, and with the "doubled up" nature of the 5800 series why are ppl so suprised? I don't think it's realistic to expect Ati to rework their current architecture to ensure full speed while running Furkmark. What they have done is seems reasonable to me. I think ppl are nit-picking and exaggerating. Would they have preferred a massive delay to ensure full speed operation in Furmark? lol They're great cards, get over it. I had a 5870, awesome card, but my GTX 280 still gets the job done, for now

go back to september where they specifically mentioned the VRMs were designed to throttle, CAUSE THE OLD PROBLEM WAS GPUS CRASHING. so they did fix the problem.

i just RMAd a 4850 that actually had real heat issue on the VRMs while playing games, mass effect pushed the gpu alot harder than other games ive played since i got it. to really test out the issue, i ran the OCCT gpu bench (much like furmark) and logged the temps, the guys at xfx said not too as it can permanently damage the cards.

sofar no one has any game or benchmark that causes it to throttle, and until i see one, im considering this not an issue.

I'm currently hashing things out with ATI before the article goes live or I even continue testing but I have seen 110°C+ temps on the VRMs in Far Cry 2 DX10, HawX DX10, Unigine Heaven DX11 and STALKER CoP DX11. On the other hand, temps stayed within normal ranges in Fallout 3, Call of Duty: WaW, Left 4 Dead and Dawn of War 2.

This holds true for all three HD 5970 cards I have....

It looks like temps are a particular problem in DX10 / DX11 apps which makes sense considering the high load they put on the card. This could also explain the oddly low performance of the HD 5970 at higher resolutions / IQ settings in Far Cry 2 DX10 versus a dual HD 5850 setup. I know many people have suspected drivers but I have gone through a number of supporting betas (early RC, 9.11 beta w/ HD 5970 support, 9.12 beta) and none of them improve upon the performance of this year-old game. Maybe I am wrong but considering the temps I have seen, it would make sense.

When I was testing ways to cool the VRM for a silent PC with HD 5850, using some small aftermarket heatsinks for VRM's I had some runs of FurMark (1 hour long each ) in which the VRM would get up to 123-125 oC. The HD 5850 did not go into any kind of throttle for thos VRM temps.

The VRMs are simply too hot. Better cooling or adding more phases would increase the performance. Any reviews about mods/custom cooling for the HD5970 yet?

EDIT: While writing this, Monstru posted above... - I'm awfully sorry!

Here is a 5970 under an EK FC5970. I suspect he's using too much vcore for 1000mhz, however, his gpus are in the 40's while his vrms are in the 80's

wow, soon people are just gonna ask what the VRM temps are.

i wonder if the swifty unisink will even be worthwhile for these.

    Thumbs up

Sorry but my VRMs never pass the 80 in gaming, of course if your game is Furemark for hours they will max at 107 for me. Even 71 in crysis, all I have done was raising the fan to 40% and my PC case is open with a 120mm 0.65amp fan blowing on the 5970.
I was too afraid before buying the card but after seeing 71 in crysis I was happy. And that is the hottest VRM and the card was OC to 950/1200.
And this is on idle when the weather is cold on air:

Both cores if not my score wouldnt be that high, vGPU=1.17
v on the ram was on default 1.1v. I just cant get the memory past 1150 even with 1.15v any help?
My screen is 1080p and therefore doesnt support 1200, so I just set everything on Extreme with 4xAA 16AF. My cpu is old thought Q9550 at 3.4Ghz.
Whats not right for you? The temps above are not the load temps I stated it was idle temps load with vantage was 66.

I cant get the memory past 1150 even if I up the votlage can it be my psu not giving enough voltages? TX850 with 70A/12v. Im scared because in Furemark I see powerconsumption 72amp which is higher than the PSU can that burn the psu?
