Here the results on my first attempt and my first post on this forum as well...

I succeeded unlocking my Phenom II X2 550 on an AsRock A780GXH/128M (BIOS P1.20) after having installed Win XP SP3 (see CPU-Z link and screendump below). I used default BIOS settings, put Advanced clock calibration (ACC) on 'auto' and Cool 'n' Quiet to 'disabled'.

Prime95 blend ran for 15 hours stable, but in return I have boot problems now!

After 'hibernation' or 'restart' the system doesn't even boot into the BIOS anymore (no startup splash screen, just black screen, no mouse lighting, fans are running). Only after many reset button / 5 sec power button pushing, it seems to revive and (if hibernated) windows says it failed in resuming from hibernation, then starts fresh windows and runs ok again (still showing 4 cores in CPU-Z).

The BIOS max Vcore setting is at 1.55 V (default value) and the cores run at this max voltage as well (see screendump).

Later I tried to step back to BIOS P1.10 and unlocked it with ACC -> 'auto'. Although the default max Vcore value is the same, the funny thing is tha the cores are now running on 1.40 V and the system is not stable at all, crashes in seconds / minutes. The CPU model is not recognized by this older BIOS btw.

Any suggestions to fix my boot problem are very welcome!

Hey guys, Thought i would post my attempt here.

    I brought the 550 BE and a Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P

So far i have failed to get 4 cores working.

Using the F4G bios, i am able to set to ACC auto + hybrid mode, but when i reboot, it crashes at the windows 7 loading screen.

I have tried alot of different settings with the voltages.
vcore up to 1.5 and nbvid to 1.3(the nbvid voltage change doesn't show up in software tho, says its 1.1v I think this is a bug with the mobo?) But it still crashes as its loading windows, usually gives me the error:IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

So i guess the other 2 cores on my 550BE are duds? Unfortunately i forgot to write down the stepping number.

Only other reason i can think of is - I had a old amd x2 4400+ and asus mobo in this computer and i haven't reformatted windows 7 after changing mobo/cpu/ram, but i doubt this would be the problem?

Anyway this is what i can OC to on 2 cores and be rock solid stable, it ran prime95 for over 5 hours small ftt fine. 40 deg max temp 28-30 idle

I have had it up to 4.1ghz and able to run some simple tests like super pi but it crashed if i ran something like Intel burn test very quickly.

just interested to no if changing the HT link speed has any benefit? i tried it at 2.4 and it seemed fine.

Also is my NB frequency at a good level?

    thanks guys.

You need to start at stock speeds, and try lower memory speeds first.

Does unlocking it from dual core to quad core effect memory performance? Like if you run it as a dual core can you clock ram higher?

Unlocking your dual core won't allow you to achieve higher speeds on your RAM. Unlocking your dual core actually may LOWER your max RAM speed because two additional cpu cores must now communicate with your RAM.

I assumed that, but I really see no difference either way.

    Not too shabby there.

Any idea why higher NB reduces the bandwidth of L1 and L2 caches at 3.6GHz? It's only marginal in the grand scheme, but they aren't unaffected or improving.

Judging from the list on the first page, 0924EPMW seems to have decent success. No idea about 0925CPMW though.

@ HondaGuy - Is it just me, or is the F6 BIOS not available on Gigabyte's site in the US? I see F4, F5 and F6A. Talking about MA790X-UD4P, same board you have screenies of above.

How high does the 550 usually go with stock volts? Primestable and occt and that not just screen stable.

After upgrading to the F6 bios I couldn't reach 3.6 ghz stable on stock volts, stable after switching back to F5.
