Toms is just plain horrible. Its only a tad better than theinq and fudzilla. Also dont count on any CPU using DDR3-800

BUT.. Looking at his chart, the bottom three are single socket so they are bloomfields not gainestowns..
    single QPI vs dual..
The confusion is we're talking dual socket in this thread and that graph shows some single socket cpu's

Yep. But its the same as Core 2 vs Xeon 3300/3400 series. 100% same. Just like the price.

Someone must somehow wrongly have linked W to workstation and the ball kept going from there. Plus its funny that sites reports(all with same source) that E5506 and 04 is quadcores. But 5502 is dualcore....

Its like fudzilla wrote the news

Correct, and on his chart it gets more confusing to most because they list the top W5580 under workstation and we all know that is a dual QPI cpu intended for dual socket boards..

They are none of the above. But 100% custom design. If you also note that the CPUs/Memory are on a slide in board.

Another little thing to keep the confusion going

Yes, I thought so, too. And with the "W" prefix, Tom labelled them "Workstation" and not "Server".

But I still haven't understood why Intel didn't name the W5580 X5580 instead? Is it really just because the TPD is 130W and not 95W?

So that some fool wouldn't stuff them in a 1U and stand back to watch it melt! j/k

    A noob question here:
I only wondered myself this now, but, on those DP mobos can you use all the memory slots the board has if you install only one CPU at first or can you only do that if both cpus are installed?

You can only use the memory slots connected to a CPU.

So if you got 18 slots. 9 for CPU A and B. If you only have a CPU in socket A. Then you can only use 9 slots thats attached to A. And with 2 CPUs you can use all 18.

    Err... Turbo-boost AND 80W?

Sounds like not much thermal space to boost either way.

Too bad that Blu-ray burner has to go, but I still undercut the single socket Mac Pro.

I just speced out a system. If you fully upgrade everything, you can get up to a whopping 14,999 dollars for just the box. That does NOT include dongles, keyboard, software or monitor. Freeking insane pricing.

But Turbo only works on one Core at time, right?

If it works correctly, I do believe so. But most i7 boards seem to run them 24/7 on all cores

Turbomode works on both all cores and a single. Like a 2.26Ghz becomes quad 2.4Ghz or single/dual 2.53Ghz etc.

It all depends on cooling, headroom etc. If its a scorching hot day or not. If the 100% load is light or heavy etc.

There is a simple video about it here.

Sure, but why would someone say a $100 costs $300? I never saw anyone add more than one or two of these apps.

Those L5520's look real nice actually at only 60W TDP, though wish it had the 6.4GT/s QPI. Those with the X8DAH board look like a winner for a storage server. I know where my tax refund is going.

What are the memory requirements? Unregistered or Registered. Its back to high cost CPUs but cheap memory.

    Hooray
    You ready for this?
    They will take all three types depending on the board;
regular DDR3-1333, then ECC and last ECC Registered, all depending on the motherboard maker.
    Orginal spec was DDR3-1333 ECC
I just bought 6x1 gig of those for $136.00 delivered from kingston.
