Q9450 OC / Temps / Settings

Quick Question: Once I get everything in, I'll start OC'ing. What's the best tools to check system stability - OCCT & Prime95? Anything else?

Also - Is there somewhere I can find out what Temperature Limits I should stay within on Load? I'm assuming Real Temp is the application to use for monitoring temperatures.

Real Temp is what I use to measure my core temps. As far as testing I use mainly Prime95; but I do use Super PI and do a quick 4M test, as it usually spots wrong settings [at least to me it does] and I do not have to wait a long time running Prime95 to know I messed up somewhere along the line. Also, since I'm a gamer, I like to run a quick FFXI Benchmark [is the game I play the most on my PC, so I like to make sure it runs tip top] which oddly enough has spotted a few conflicts here and there for me. Once The PI and the benchmark go fine, I go ahead and run Prime95 and keep an eye on it for the first couple of hours. After that I just turn off the monitor and let it run for 8 more hours at least.

You're saying that P35 is useless for clocking 45's, yet as soon as someone perks up to contest your opinion (yes 'opinion', not facts) you go off on one.

Judging by your claims I can expect this Q9450 to breeze past 4ghz on the Maximus.

I don't understand why everyone's getting all rattled up. All I get from his post is:

1] P35 was not really made with the 45nm in mind.
2] OC'ing a 45nm on a X38/48 will yield better results [eventually IMHO, right now the BIOS versions for most X48 boards aint that great].
3] He's stating that, if Luc went with a 45nm, then he should have gone with a board made for that kind of CPU.

Then again, that's just my 2 cents on the matter. Carry on.

Enough results here in the forum for proof too.
My CPU makes 3.8ghz on a 70 bucks gigabyte DS3 P35. Can't even get 3.6ghz stable with more voltage on the x38.
Hand picked x48 might yield better results but not better then on a P35.

If you look for through this forum for good 45nm quad overclocks you will find out that most achived thm on a P35 board.

See, that was the point behind my post. I do believe that this will change soon [with some boards at least, ASUS seems to be taking it really slow when it comes to BIOS updates for the P5E3 Premium, the 3 they did come out with didn't do anything for overclocking, they just kept adding support for "processors". Meanwhile my Q9450 was recognized from the get go with the first BIOS and they said it was not supported until the second BIOS version, go figure]. I have high hopes for the BlackOps motherboard, not just because I own one, but because of what I read about it and the features it comes with. Once manufacturers start providing good support, X48 should take off like it was meant to do.

please post all your actual voltages such as PLL, FSB termination, and Northbridge. Also run cpuz and see if your chipset is G35 rev3. The FP0/Batch# of cpu may help to. I've had great success with this board up to 498FSB for screenshot and 495FSB 3DMark Stable.

I'm stable with all settings at auto except the FSB at 333-390. Beyond that I get intermittant POST. I've tried adjusting cpu, nb, dram voltages. PCIE = 100, lowering freq for RAM, Tried higher timings for RAM. All with no go.

I think it may be my board. I've tried bringing down the multiplier to 6X and at 400FSB and got no POST. Should I try to reseat the northbridge heatsink?

I doubt that would help, the NB heatsink is so stuck on that board that you more than likely with knick your board trying to take it off. Quite honestly I think you should look for a better PSU, 500W is not going to be enough if you intend on running a 3870 in that setup.

Also, is Real Temp 2.60 the latest version you're using?

Lastly - BIOS on the ASUS P5K-E/Wifi-AP has changed tremendously since my last ASUS P5W DH Deluxe. I was wondering what's the best place to find out some step-by-step advice on how to go about OC'ing this Q9450 on the P5K-E/Wifi-AP.

I have been reading alot online as the temperature sensors on the Q9450 are sensitive to which program you use to detect them as far as I can tell.

My Q9450 runs at 39-32-39-39 no OC'ing (realtemp) no load)
also runs at 39-32-39-39 at 3.33GHZ 1.29v NB (realtemp) no load)

I have used a few programs on my Q9450 to give examples of temps at idle 3.33Ghz (at 6 multiplier)

Realtemp 39-32-39-39
Coretemp 49-42-49-49
Hardware Monitor 49-42-49-49
Intel T.A.T Wont run on this CPU
Speedfan 43-37-44-44
OCCT 49-43-49-49

Supposely Realtemp is the only one that displays true temps on 45nm core, according to tomshardware forum.

I am using a WC setup consisting of D-Tek Fuzion, MCP655 pump, Swiftech MCP30 NB and thermochill PA120.2 (push config) flat out.

Can anybody else confirm that the temps they get from different programs are very different please?
And if anyone can tell me why my temps are so high and explain why the second core is so cold and my 4th core doesnt heat up more than 2 C then you have one up on OCZ Forum, tech.pc.co.uk and a few other forums!

Bass- just read the info about calibration regarding Realtemp at techpowerup (where you DL it from).

Also, the difference is NOT b/c of the sensors as you posted, its b/c each program has a different Tjmax setup (which you will see when you read the info about Realtemp)

The difference is in the tjmax. Your some of your cpu core sensors also seem to be stuck. This is normal. Intel says to disregard core temp and instead use cpu temp.

@ Luci5r; What batch cpu did you get? I'm interested in seeing how your board overclocks that cpu. Also, what is your vid. #?

UPS tracking is showing it should be here Wednesday. Motherboard & RAM is due to arrive today. What is Vid#? I'll give you the Batch information off the CPU as soon as I have it.

I'm still trying to gather BIOS information on how to OC this chip on this motherboard.

Intel told me the same thing when I emailed them about my temps on my Q9450. If you were going to monitor just the Cpu temp what program would you use?

I dunno where you have been for the past 2 months.... but X38 does not clock 45nm Quads worth a damn either... most Maximus Formula's are stuck at 440mhz FSB regardless of BIOS. I have gone through 3 chips, 2 X3350's and 1 Q9450 and all of them got stuck in the 440's regardless of voltage (and I am watercooled).

The only boards I have seen worth a damn is G35 (P5E VM HDMI), 790i, *some* X38 boards mostly from DFI/Gigabyte have clocked 45nm even over 3600mhz. And of course its emerging that X48 / Rampage Formula (real one, not flashed) is clocking them all the way to 480mhz FSB.

So all that being said I dont know where you get your info that X38 is any better at clocking 45nm Quads over P35. And dualcore I doubt is any different between X38/P35 its probably about the same hitting 4ghz area on the 8400's.

I'm using Real Temp at the moment, which if I'm not mistaken reads the core temps and not the CPU Temp. The email I received from Intel Techs said to not concern myself with the core temps and only the Cpu temp. I know most here tend to use Real Temp so why would Intel tell me otherwise?

okay so im to carry on using real temp and not exceed 71.4 Degrees C as suggested on intels website!

P35 wins hands down al most every time compared to X38 let alone X48 and that has been proven time and time again on numerous forums and bench testing sites!

Stuck sensor is on the CPU i believe...(see realtemp documentation)

P35 may win, but its only by negligable amounts. not something anyone would notice over X38/48 or 780i/790.
