I can sell my 8800GTS 640 for $410 CAD. People already want to buy it. I was thinking, should I sell it and get the 2900XT?
I hate computers! : P
oops I mean 8800gts 640 for 2900xt im tired :/

sell it now only if upgrading to a gtx
No i'm not... I could basicly get the GTS for the same price as the 2900XT If I sold it. so I could test it out and stuff.
Allthough im not too sure on a few things... Will a OCZ GameXstream 600w handle it? and how loud do you think itll be in a lian li pc65? compared to the GTS.
afaik the 2900 has the same hsf mounts as the x1800/x1900 series, so u might find a cooler for cheap.
However, the performance increase will not be significant, unless you're running and gaming on vista
i'd recommend to wait for prices to drop on the 1gb ver of x2900
HSF is different and it's not as loud (specially the people that do not own one) make it out to bed. Your PSU might be enough but don't expect high OCs. And yes, wait for the 1GB version.
It doesnt run louder, it doesnt run hotter, it does eat more juice but there isn't a stardard and it's like you'll have go out and get a 1KW PSU. I owned a 8800GTS 640MB and although it gave more fps according the game benches (i.e. FEAR) the game ran just as smooth with the HD2900XT and I couldn't tell the difference or even feel the HD2900XT slower. And if you like to 3DMark benching, the 8800GTS 640MB can't touch the HD2900XT.

i was gonna but the 8800GTX 2 times, but ended up getting the 2900xt.
Theres some 3rd party heatsinks coming out of Computex.
If you have an intel chipset, you can crossfire, and have alot better performance than an 8800ultra overclocked but for alot less $$$.
i think the fan is a little too loud in a quiet environment (i do have a sapphire 2900XT) and it does shoot out some warmy's too.
Dont care about power usage coz all high end video cards do roughly the same.
Idle is extremely good, super quiet and cool (using windows desktop stuff)
Never said it runs hotter.
It does run louder, just watch the guru3d video.![]()
Also, this guy already has the 8800GTS 640mb, which nets faster framerates in games, so what would be the point in selling it to get a HD 2900XT? Higher 3dmark scores? That's about as pointless as a pimp trying to pull a nun.
i s'pose if you were bored and want something to do.
they'll charge even more for the 1gig version.
some specific app's will run better on the 2900 i think..and some dont.
sold a gts recently; they are popular for some reason
cheap GTX (+20%ish performance) or wait until G92 GTS/X...(+50-100%ish?) i'm waiting for G92 GTS (christmas?) - when i'll sell my other 8800 GTS
now i'm of to ebay to sell my 9136's wile their aus retail price is still high![]()

I think it's worth it ONLY IF you already have a 1KW PSU (room for another cheap X2900XT for INSANE performance) and if you have watercooling.
Do you think there is anyway you can make a video of it's noise? I already heard the one of 2900's in CF but that dosen't really count cause it's 2 cards.
If I sell it now I can get a fair price for it , if I keep it and wait for the 1gb version as much as I want to get it i'll only get like $330ish CAD for the GTS.
Unless the 2900XT 1gb's are coming out soon.
Totally agree with the above post.![]()
I would suggest you keep your 8800GTS 640MB.
I've never liked ATI's move to the Catalyst driver set which forces you to install Microsoft's .net framework that ends up slowing down your whole computer.
I just don't like it at all. Too bad you can't change GPUs in laptops (x700 in my notebook).
I couldn't see why you wouldn't be happy with the card you have now. Multiple monitor and scaling support is, in my opinion, much better with nVidia graphics cards over ATI's and like people have said above it draws less power.
This is important because of the environment and well, you might as well add the price of a new power supply to the cost of the 2900XT since the one you have now could possibly be insufficient for it.
SOLID card all around and nVidia's graphics cards also have yet to see mature driver sets.
I'm not all too familiar with ATI GPU vendors, but nVidia's vendors usually have great tech support and lifetime warranties.
I suggest just using your videocard for whatever games you are playing now and see if it's "enough".
If not then step up to a GTX, but don't change it up for an HD 2900XT.
Cheers,
Mike
Its true, you must install M$ .net framework 2.0, otherwise CCC won't start. I don't agree about the point its slowing down my whole computer though..
id say its a waste of time and effort. If the two is so similar as nicepun said then why bother going for it if there isnt any noticable gain?
Intel is like Egypt in Rome:total war
CCC only gives you access to the more advanced features, something that ATI Tray Tools will do just fine. As far as I can tell, CCC has always been optional to install (I've used it once over the past 3-4+ years). While the CCC was slow as hell the last time I used it, CCC and the .NET framework didn't adversely effect my computer.
edit: Sorry for hijacking...I guess I can contribute to the thread too
I'd say if you want to take a gamble on the 2900 and play with 3dmark, go for it. As of now, the drivers are immature and as DilTech and others have pointed out, I wouldn't buy a card today that might outperform the competition at some undetermined time in the future, ESPECIALLY given the current climate in the graphics industry.

The crap people make up to slam ATI is awe inspiring. It is right up there with people making 'reviews' of cards they dont have.
First you dont need a god given PSU for an ATI card. I used a 450 watt FSP psu on my XFX for a good OC. Try that on a Nvidia card and see if it doesn't give you a "power cord not connected' message.
Second no you dont need Net framework except possibly for crossfire or simple convinence.
Sound ATI might be louder with a sound meter but to many they are far less annoying than the ATI air raid siren you get with many of the Nvidia heatsinks.
Sadly ATI is not as good at putting a good spin on ther products and often loose out to the marketing master even when they have a better product.
The average user most likly will not see much diffrence between the GTS and the HD but overclocked and with the more recent drivers the ATI is a clear winner.
Unfortunately many people seem only to do enough research to confirm their previous beliefs and therefore many only bothers with the most quickly released reviews that used older drivers.
Yes the established review sites can not be expected to work on the weekends but when their results do not reflect the product as shipped they start to become pointless. I am expecting any performance oriented user to download the latest drivers not simply settle with the shipped and out dated ones like the review sites used.
Do your self a favor and look at the posts of people that have the card and use the latest drivers it is a different world than the review site.
I am considering the 1gb card that is expected soon but the high BS level is not making the choice easy.![]()
