The DS3, like most 965P mobos, use a JMicron SATA/IDE controller chip that Windows sees as a SCSI device. This is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.

No idea why yours show up as SCSI.

You are probably using the default MS XP IDE drivers and did not install the JMicron specific drivers. You should cos the default ones do not support the JMicron fully.Originally Posted by therat

When I go into windows update I did notice that there were JMicron drivers listed there as a recommended upgrade but so far I haven't downloaded.
My DVD drives seem to be working fine so should I bother with the JMicron drivers?

My optical drives show up as SCSI because I'm using the correct JMicron drivers for XP. I have the JMicron chip configured as IDE since I'm not using the SATA ports and I'm not using RAID.Originally Posted by therat

my dvd reading this is VERY slow. Does anyone have a fix for this?
REMOVE THE RAID SOFTWARE THAT YOU INSTALL WITH THE CD!! THATS HOW YOU FIX THE PROBLEM!

So its a GOOD idea to use the JMicron drivers? Or.... not..?
remove it. it fixed all my problems with dvd/cd and stopped showing my drive as scsi went back to the correct ide.
ok so i'll leave my setup as it is without the JMicron drivers. All working fine here as IDE.Originally Posted by crspyjohn

its showing that because you installed the jmicron drivers
if your using RAID then you have to
if your not using raid then uninstall those stupid jmicron drivers. jmicron is a crappy chipset made by a crappy company with crappy drivers
also make sure you have the latest F4 bios as i takes care of DMA mode issues.

You will most likely need it if you ever use S3 sleep/resume else you may be able to get away with the default XP drivers. I am using the latest JMicron drivers on my P5W without any problems, it's a good bridge chipset for ATAPI despite what others may say -seen much less incompatibilites compared to other chipsets.Originally Posted by hypnotoad24
The other thing to remember is to deactivate power saving options (viz. ALPE/ASP) under the BIOS/SATA else things may lag too.

What problem? Device Manager labeling the controller and drives as SCSI? The JMicron drivers are working just fine here and I don't really care what DM labels them as.Originally Posted by crspyjohn
Edit: I forgot to ask if you tried the latest JMicron drivers or only the old ones that came on the install CD?

There are two Serial ATA controllers on the board. There's the Gigabyte SATA controller, and there's the Intel SATA controller. The intel connections are yellow and the Gigabyte connections are a dark violet I believe. They use completely different drivers. The question would be is the IDE port you're connected to controlled by the Intel controller or the Gigabyte controller?
There is a separate IDE (PATA) connection which shouldn't be controlled by either I would imagine.Originally Posted by norain

sorry, for that you will prob. need a DS3 owner to come along and help out cos I own only the Asus P5W and P5B mobos. Dropped by this thread hoping to help someone avoid potential problems cos I was in the same mess when I did not install the JMicron drivers, was hoping to make do with the default XP ones.
I had similiar problem yesterday, all what I did I unistalled that JMicron driver from device manager, and then rebooted my computer. Also don't install these JMicron drivers from windows update, they make all pata/ide-devices regonised as scsi-devices.

The Intel ICH8 southbridge has no IDE support. The JMicron controller has 2 SATA ports and 1 IDE channel. IDE devices showing up as SCSI in Windows is not a problem, in and of itself.

Etc.
Microsoft apps don't detect SCSI rewriters. You can't use a SCSI detected rewriter in windows media center, windows media player, windows dvd maker, etc... That's the problem of having a IDE device detetcted as SCSI.
