    New Big Typhoon Revision?

Supposedly I have been told that Thermaltake has updated the mounting kit slightly on the Big Typhoon so that you know longer have to use the stock DFI backplate and the shorter screws. Can anyone confirm this for me?

    Thanks

I just got a couple yesterday. They don't require the use of the "stock" backplate...they include the "H" clips for the backing just like for the top of the unit. I can't speak on what the older design was though...

They always included the H backplate as far as I know... I always bought my own bolts and thumbscrews for them....

I just got one last week. It came with 2 H plates and other stuff. They tell you to use longer screws that are inclued and a H plate on the back of the board.

I used the H-plate but i put some thick nylon washers inbetween the H-plate and the motherboard so the h-plate wouldn't crush the capacitors on the back of the socket. I had to use longer screws and wingnuts as well.

Ok that's great news. I just wanted to know if I still had to run to the hardware store or not. For some reason Lowe's does not have the 6-23 1.5" wingnuts I was looking for. Now I can look for a painless installation.

I'm assuming these washers come with the BT? Also, you placed the washers between the H backplate and the back of the board? Thanks for the opinion.

Sorry bout my bad MSPaint skillz but this should help.

    Silver = H Plates
Yellow = Thick nylon washers from old Maze3 waterblock
Red = Some longer screws I had laying around
Blue = Nuts I had laying around that fit screws

    Hopefully this helps.

Before receiving my BigTyphoon i've read many horror stories about the mounting hardware ... so untrue ... it comes with everything you need to set it up using it's custom backplate. Maybe a couple wing nuts would help but it's ok ...

So I take it you installed using the directions provided by TT? I ask this because I was told by some that they recently have some revision 2005.05 directions that explicitly tell you to remove the backplate.

Yes, this is true. My directions said if you have a plastic backplate like used on the asus boards (DFI as well) to remove the backplate and use the H-plate they provide.

I'm sure you can do it how they're directions say, but i didn't want to crush the resistors on the back of the motherboard. Hence the nylon washers/spacers in my pic.

I rather used the stock plastic backplate than crushing the resistors on the back. Works fine so far. I also have the rev 2005.05 manual, but I think they forgot something and/or they translated something wrong. The older revision of the manual is on their page.
I dont think that it makes much of a difference if you use the stock backplate instead of the metal one which came with the BT.
Everybody seems to mount it differently Just have a look at some of the other BT threads to get the idea.

I removed the normal DFI backplate and I've used the H back-plate and H rubber plate from the original BT accesories to mount ... very easy and simple.

I had a few metal backplates here from other coolers I reviewed. I just popped one of those on.

I'll show you the 'Mad MikeE' way that leads to easy mounting and uses my DFI backplate tomorrow, when I redo my V1000 for WC and the OCZ 600 (power tools involved )

Talking Mad mikee's way of putting in a TTBT

Parts (All 6-32, using DFI backplate) (top screwholes sanded til flush w/ board )

THE TTBT (Can't leave stuff alone, gotta make it just a BIT better )

How the mounting looks (final tighening done while looking at PC health in bios - VERY IMPORTANT. (Also note the jb-quik (jb-weld) to keep the crossplate where it belongs )

The whole mess (neatness was not a factor HERE, for that you have to see what I am switching to (quickie change for CPU) in the WC section (next post))

Mike, doesn't the lower origin for mounting put a lot more pressure on the CPU socket as opposed to having the H plate up high?
