Yes, it fits perfect because (a) you positioned your brackets on the left & right of the CPU, and (b) your case must be a lot larger and gives you more clearance above the top of the motherboard.

I have the Lian-Li Lancool K1 mid-tower, and if I position the C12P as you have it, it'll hit my Corsair 620HX, or the PSU tray. Here's my case but with my old Intel DX48BT2 board, with C12P installed:

I've grudgingly ordered a Noctua U12P, the height of that thing but on its side really puts me off, I'm worried about gravity pulling on the board, even with the SecuFirm retention mechanism. Regardless, it seems to be a well-regarded cooler. Thank you to cheapseats, I never knew there was a U12P.

Tell me, with your U12P, did you use the air heatsink that comes with the Asus board, instead of the fusion block? Does it fit? I hope so, I've already installed the air optional heatsink with a good layering of compound.

Might be worth reading back a few pages about board warping issues when using a TRUE120 - I experienced 3mm of distortion myself - how does the weight of the Noctua compare ?

I'm running mine flat on a table, so I can't really say about warping. U12P isn't that big or heavy though - I wouldn't be too worried about it myself.

Found the cooling fine for e8600 and haven't bothered with a second CPU fan yet :up:

Thank you for considering the weight. As I discovered, the Thermalright TRUE is 790g, and that's without a fan, basing the fact that a fan is around 190g, that means the TRUE would approximately be 1000g.

The Noctua from specifications is 600g without a fan, with a fan it's 790g. So the Noctua is approximately 200g's lighter. I still am hesitant against using a tower type cooler, I worry about the long term affects of gravity with this type of heatsink.

Thank you, I appreciate you taking the time for the picture! Your picture is extremely helpful and gives me confidence I ordered a heatsink that won't be a useless brick. I really *want* to use this C12P but I just can't get it to fit, ah well. I did think about changing case so even although the heatsink hangs off the top of the board it wouldn't hit anything, but its cheaper to buy a new heatsink!

The TRUE With 2 120 fans will be fine for long term use 24/7 you have nothing to worry about

As suggested in this thread and others, I removed my heatpipe assembly and applied Noctua NT-H1 compound, then without adding washers I simply tightened up the screws a little more on the back of the board.

I run the same as you do, the TWIN3X2048-1800C7DFIN G.

I started with 400 10 4000 1600 666 18 1N tRD5 and it was pretty good but I need 1,70+ for the NB with tRD5 and tRD6 is no good.

Tried 475 9 4275 1900 777 21 1T tRD7, awesome bandwidth and latency but I need 2,15v on those ram to be stable, a little to much for my liking, maybe with a little more tweaking I can get below 2,05v.

How do your setup look like with your ram at 1900 777 18?

With 500 8,5 4250 2000 888 24 1N tRD8 I can get 32M stable but not stable when I loop Crysis with Crysis Benchmark Tool or when I play Crysis, maybe with more tweaking it may can be stable but I don´t know where to start, skew or subtiming, any suggestion.

With my 790i Ultra I could reach 2050 888 24 1T tRC 34 at 2,05v stable with Crysis.

I can run 500 8,5 4250 1600 666 18 1T tRD7

To beat 450 9,5 4275 1800 777 21 1T tRD6 I need something like 2050 - 2060MHz at 888 with ratio 1:2 and I talk about more fps, but if I can get 475 1900 to run below 2,05v I think I go with that setup.

So this is where I stand right now.

Does anyone else's Rampage Extreme heatpipe assembly sit high at some points? I just looked at my own after re-installing it with thermal compound, the small rubber washers don't even touch the board in some cases, yet in other areas they do! The screws are fully tightened though, it's odd.

Also, is it a given that if too much compound was used on the Northbridge (NB) then when the heatsink is screwed in place, the compound would run down the side of the chip? I checked and I don't have any compound squirting down the side of the chip, but still wonder if I used too much:

I've had a 975 board myself (P5WDH deluxe) but i honstly don't know what you mean with SB voltage= PLL. :shrug:

Mine hangs once in a while also (maybe once or twice a week), mainly at idle but is Prime and 3D stable.

@ Ghostleader - Thanks for the detailed reply :up: . I can get up to 1840 with 7-6-5-18 timings and 2.06v but 1900 requires 7-7-7-20 and 2.10v. That is my limit for CPU temps as my rad fans are running at 9v until I get a controller so i've backed it down to 1880 and 470FSB for an acceptable temp->noise balance.

@ Aln688 - Mine was all over the place too so don't worry. Look for N/B idle temps of around 40 when you get it running. Good to hear that the Noctua H/S is lighter than the TRUE. My TRUE120 is now a shelf ornament !!, my personal opinion is strapping 1kg to a vertically mounted board in temps between 30-70C cannot be too great for the board and I know of at least one RMA in this forum due to warping.

Finally settled with the settings in my sig for 0801. I can post detailed bios settings if requested or email my bios backup file. This board requires a lot of patience and GTL & SKEW tweaking.

Thank you Rob2k, glad I'm not the only one that's concerned about board warping due to using brick-like heatsinks. I don't mind slightly higher temperatures so long as my board isn't going to suffer in the long run. I wouldn't say the Noctua is ideal at 790g, but it's better than 1000g.

When I get it running I'll post my NB temperatures, idle and load. What are the primary tools to stress Windows to check NB temperatures? I see Prime 95 mentioned? I'll also be looking to overclock my Q9550 2.83GHz to 3.4GHz, this should be an easy 400 FSB, matching my Kingston HyperX 1600 RAM.

Did some more testing on the board and I just got my replacement Corsair HX1000w Lapped the True again just to waste time and here we go tomorrow I might Go 2000mhz ram at same timings with 4500mhz cpu clock using 9x500 that should be my 24/7 setup that would be nice.

If you look through the early pages of this topic there are pics of the H/P thermal tape not touching the components just to the left of the ROG flashing logo so worth checking there too. The screws are all the same but I don't think every H/P threaded post is the same length without going in the loft and checking this out. I had high hopes with this boards stock cooling and additional heatsinks (hence high cost !) but all of that is in a box never to be used again.

As far as benching tools from my screenshots above you can see that I use RealTemp to show temps of individual CPU cores and Asus PcProbe for NB and SB temps. Everest is a great tool for memory and cache read/write performance. HyperPi is the mutlicore version of SuperPi and can be set to run on all 4 cores at once to 32M accuracy. The 24 loops take about 14 minutes so it is a fairly short indication of system stability after which you can use Prime95, 3dMark 06 and Vantage to test longer term stability and also more varied aspects of your system - graphics, disc performance, etc. It can be a touchy subject as people have varied opinions as to what makes a system stable. if mine runs HyperPi to32M on all four cores at once, primes for a couple of hours, runs 3dMark 06 and Vantage and then games without freezing or crashing then I am satisfied.

@ Ozzfest05 - Good results with the G.Skills. Looks like 500 is just around the corner ;)

Well Rob2k (and others), you were right. To double check I took off my heatpipe assembly just to check it was making contact, here is what I found:

...this was AFTER I already removed it, applied good quality thermal compound to the NB, SB and MOSFET chips and had re-installed it. I could hardly believe my eyes. About 70% of the NB chip wasn't even touching the copper.

I did notice that some of the "pillars" on the bottom of this heatpipe assembly touch the board (via the rubber washer), where some didn't. I'm furious that a board of this cost is so sloppily engineered so far as the heatpipe assembly.

I'm unsure how to proceed from here, I'm not really wanting to water cool. I suppose I could try the washer mod as mentioned before, problem is, I don't think ALL pillars or holes in this heatpipe assembly need a washer, ugh.

FYI, you're right, each pillar or post for the heatpipe assembly is not the same length, how on earth could they QC when this is the case?!

Hi Aln688 - On a bit of a mission tonight so will have more time in the morning - there are passive N/B heatsinks available from Noctua and Thermalright that still allow for a decent sized CPU H/S to be installed. If you search this thread I think 3oh6 has had some impressive results with the Noctua one. It just means fitting the small EK sinks to the other components (see my avatar pic).

Zeus, I'm sitting here shaking my head constantly wondering why the hell a board that costs so much, has so little compound on the parts that need it and so little contact pressure. It's outrageous. I've never spent this much on a board before and yet with this board I've spent the most time and effort on it. I really want to ditch it and get a Gigabyte, but I don't know how good or bad they are, maybe that's just another barrel of problems, who knows.

No problem Rob2k, you seem experienced in such matters, I appreciate any advice you have. I've made an executive decision, I'm going to rip off the HPA (Heat Pipe Assembly) and go with Enzotech copper heatsinks. I need help from the community here determining which heatsinks I need for which components. The components I think I need to buy heatsinks for are:

* Northbridge
* Southbridge
* MOSFETs
* Three large chokes (next to silver Fujitsu chip)
* MOSFETs one row to left of CPU socket
* MOSFETs one row along top of CPU socket

I see Sidewindercomputers has a good range of coolers, problem is, I look at them and don't have a clue if they'll fit my board. FYI, I'm not watercooling, just air for now.

for the MOSFETs, you want BMR-C1s, a single pack should be 8 which is all you will need for those.

for the MOSFETs around the NB, a package of the MOS-C1s should do the trick...it's been a while since i have been under my heatsinks i have on there but the package comes with 10 and i think 8 is all you need.

to be honest, the chokes near the NB don't need heat sinks, but if you wanted to add a second pack of BMR-C1s, a pair of those cover them nicely.

for the SB, the SLF-1 should do the trick.

for the Northbridge, pretty much any NB heat sink will do good. the more cooling power the better. i am just not familiar with the Enzotech lineup to recommend anything.

i honestly can't believe i haven't added an alternative cooling section to the OC Report but will get started on that as soon as i clean a few things up. i have a full Enzotech setup, the same parts i listed above, and will use that as the hardware. here is a photo of my setup with Swiftech MC-14s (basically identical to Enzotech BMR-C1s). i simply cut an MC-14 in half for the MOSFETs near the NB.

I do like your idea of the BMR-C1 heatsinks along the top and left side of the board, very neat and tidy. I sense a sigh of relief to ditching this Asus HPA (Heat Pipe Assembly), that thing was the source of frustration. I'll try to ignore the fact I spent over $400 on it and I'm now throwing parts away.

The SLF-1 Enzotech part, does that sit flush on the SB chip? I read somewhere that it sits to an angle not covering the chip, I can't find that post. So in your opinion is it not worth covering the chokes near the NB? That would be a time saver.

Also I heard it mentioned you tried the Noctua HC-U6 NB cooler, how did it install/perform? I see it is now discontinued. Thanks again.

the NC-U6 works fine as would the HR-05 but you will need active cooling with either one IMO. there is just too much heat being dumped by the x48 chipset that either one without a fan would struggle.

as for the SB, yes, the SLF-1 or even the CNB-S1L as Ozzfest05 suggested sit a bit at an angle but cover more than enough of the SB to cool it more than adequately. the SB doesn't generate much for heat at all so either one would work fine...the passive one actually being the better choice perhaps. i just grabbed the SLF-1 as i can always take the fan off if not needed but when it is on my 790i boards i will need the fan.

oh, and if time is your only hangup on heat sinking the chokes near the NB...spend the 30 seconds to peel a backing off heat sinks and sticking them on ;)

@ 3oh6 - Long time no hear :up: Just out of interest what S/B temps do you have with the SLF-1 ?, I have the CNB-S1L passive version and the max S/B temp I have seen is 53 degrees. I pre-drilled holes in the mobo tray behind the retaining clips so that I could change over without removing the board - just the graphics card - if it was worthwhile.

@ aln688 - Good to see you are well on the way, stick with the RE it will be worth it in the end. The Enzotech MOS-C1 worked well for me and saved any cutting. Here is my board 'naked' but with new passive cooling before adding the water blocks :-

Really? So a fan really is needed as well? I spent time looking into the NB heatsink and the Thermalright HR-05 IFX has provision for an 80mm fan. Looks like I'll be needing it then. Yet another fan, I hope my PC doesn't sound like a vacuum cleaner when I switch it on! Do you use water cooling or a NB air heatsink?

Ha ha, I was thinking of potentially having to cut the copper heatsink in half and match it up with a whole one to get full coverage over all three chokes. I think I have time in my busy schedule to peel the backing off some thermal tape... :)

Your board looks great, but what about cooling the MOSFETs around the CPU? Or is your water cooling device have that covered? I think for me, I'm changing from the Thermalright HR-09's, I'm going with an Enzotech MST-81 MOSFET cooler, it's actually listed on Enzotech's site as compatible with the Rampage Extreme.

I think the toughest part is waving goodbye to a large part of the board, taking into considering the cost of this board, and also the cost of buying new copper heatsinks to replace the missing HPA. I was seriously considering trying to make the stock HPA work, but after seeing the posts/pillars/legs of the HPA all different lengths, and a forum post that suggested the copper that sits on the three chokes/resistors near the NB is too low, therefore lifting the HPA up off the NB, I gave up trying.

I wonder if the Rampage Extreme II (X58) is the same under the HPA as this board? Who cares, once I've got this up and running, I'm not touching it for years, I'll take a look at Rampage Extreme V if there is one.

Thanks for the advice, both yourself and 3oh6, extremely useful and gives new comers hope with this badly engineered heatpipe assembly.

yeah, been knee deep in 790i fun, the RE hasn't been fired up in a while. i haven't actually mounted the SLF-1 yet. i am hoping this weekend i will have time to do the 'alternative cooling' write up for the RE. i will do some testing with stock cooler and the SLF-1 with and without the fan for the SB. i'll keep you posted if i don't get the chance this weekend but i don't see anything preventing it from happening.

i needed a fan because i run open air setups when i tested it. without a 120mm fan blowing over the memory/NB, the temps just kept rising. if you are in a case with enough airflow around the area you might be able to get away without one. all depends on the setup. i run water on the NB, haven't had air cooling on it for quite some time. my RE is strictly a bench board.

yeah, no cutting for the Chokes, just a pair of BMR-C1s or Swiftech MC-14s covers more than enough. Rob2K has done the same as i have but with the BMR-C1s, as you can see above, and they work perfect. the cutting was only for the MOSFETs around the chokes, but with the MOS-C1s, no cutting is necessary...again, see Rob2Ks photo above. his NB setup is the ideal one and what yours should look like with the outlined parts list. as you can see as well, the SB is fully covered, just a little crooked.

I went with Thermalright HR-09S and U Type 2 combo but they feel a bit flimsy if you catch them whilst handling the board so go with the MST-81's - probably cheaper too.

Too early to think about X58, time to have fun and enjoy the performance of what I have now its running to my liking with 33% CPU O/C and 18% FSB O/C.

Look back at post 25 and post 28 which shows how I modified my TRUE120 B/P before moving to water. Unless the B/P has been re-designed since the launch of the Black version then I recommended cutting a hole for clearance to the component on the underside of the CPU socket.

I had to take the dremel to it to get it to fit as the holes just ever so slightly don't line up. :mad: So I put a small grinding stone on and extended the holes just a bit. I used it before I put the mips sb block on. With the NB under water the SB never went over 37 degrees, and this was with 1.6V through the SB.

My initial aim is to get my Q9550 2.83GHz up to 3.4GHz, 400 FSB to start. I have Kingston HyperX PC 1600 modules, 2 x 2GB, I'm thinking I may have to upgrade those to the 1800 version. If I can get to 4GHz on the CPU that will do it for me.

I believe so, yes!!! It works quite well but as I said I had to do a little modding on the length of the holes to get it to sit properly.

This is max stable for me on 801. Volts seem to be maybe a little lower all around but OC wise 5.4 is it where as on 501, 601 I can hit 5.6, 5.7. This bios is probably aimed for you guys running the samsung chips. 2160 on the ram is nothing to sneeze at though and it passed 450 percent memtest. This is with the Cellshock Black!!:) Glad I bought 2 pairs as they will make the trip to NAHELEM COUNTRY!!! :D Included this LightMark 2008 benchie, cool tune, quick, 64 bit compatible and better than watching the same old 3D mark over and over. :yepp: Off to work tomorrow and I don't know if I'll have an internet connection soooooooooooo Merry Xmas, Happy New Year to ALL!!!!:up:

and 1600 CL7 tRD 5 is possible for 4x1gb
the benchy just now 1N is actually not stable and 2n is just marginal
what i found more stability is

set channel A to pull enabled at trd 6 with 2N.. so basically a 5/6 trd
and u will get around 10400 with 4gb kit and the best of all around 48.6-49.0 for latency...

still find 4 sticks on this board is a bit unstable because of dimm A1 and B1
IBT proves this over and over again and also theres 4 test i like to do that shows stability before i run linpack

all must be run in diagnostic mode in priority 10 for orthos and virtual mem disabled. with a 64 bit system.
Test 1 .
Run Orthos, Go to Blend and then to Custom.
Change from 15 minutes to 1 minute... This will show how unstable ure GTL is very quickly.
run all interations twice so roughly one hour 30 minutes or so.

Test 2.
Run Orthos Go to Blend and then to Custom
Change min FFT to 4096...
this will show unstable ure gtl/nb/mem is .
run for atleast two runs so roughly 33 minutes or so

Test 3.
Run Orthos Go to Blen and then Custom
Change Max FFT to 8
this will show how ure CPU vcore to GTL and NB is unstable...
run for atleast two runs so roughly 30 minutes or so.

Test 4
Of course fav HSI Memtest for atleast 100% for 4gb roughly 1 hour

if u can pass the above.. linpack is guaranteed and ure gaming is fine and dandy and u will pass prime95 12 hours all the interations

so far on this board with 4 dimms i cant pass any of this test...
not a really happy camper here

2 dimms yes .. but 4 nope...
which is y linpack 50-100 runs.. aint happening any time soon.

OCCT.. such a lousy test... even gaming crysis warhead from begin to finish is a better test of stability

also theres a trick to this board for rams...
u can gain better nb voltages with good ram timings and trd loads with straps and ai clock twister

example strap 400 with ai clock twister stronger at fsb 400 CL7 trd 7
or strap 266 ai clock twister moderate at fsb 400 CL7 tRD 6
or strap 200 ai clock twister light at fsb 400 CL7 trD 5
keep trying with the dram dynamic this enabled or disable.. DONT LEAVE IT ON AUTO..

What? every time I run orthos or prime 95 I can run it for like 2 hours before it fail the same configuration fails in the first 10 minutes in OCCT I switched over for that reason, please dont put negative comments about a good program So far its the best ive used along with lin pack, If my system passes 3 hours of mixed testing in OCCT it will never crash during games all my Overclocks have been tested never had a program I ran loops of Crysis Benchmark program on highest settings for an hour and OCCT Failed in 7 minutes.

just that i find occt is really doubtful... was actually comparing to that four test... sorry about the crysis comment..but when it comes to 4x1gb clocking occt doesnt stress enough on the rams and gtl.. personal opinion..

especially when it fails very often one of that 4 test i use... before linpack..
been clocking that way for a long time and always found with that 4 can usually pass anything...

oh yeah i dont aim for gaming stable.. i want super stable...
and this board is damn hard.....for 4x1gb...

hmm has anybody gotten a proper reading for the nb gtl..
i keep getting mix result..

No problem I only use 2x1 sticks im getting better clocks slowly just received the board a week ago or so 1960mhz is real nice though, I use OCCT then Prime 95 for overnight test sometimes but mostly Linpack OCCT and I use PI, I do ram overclocks but mostly focus on cpu the 4.4ghz and 1960mhz ram is good for right now and real low voltages are being used but I dont know how much more I can squeeze out of this air set up.

My version of stable is passing 1 hour OCCT Ram and Mix tests Linpack 32m SPI and Running for a week at the clocks if no crashes occur then I cosider it stable

not planning to keep with 4 sticks - just seeing what I could get with OCZ + Transcend as 4x1GB (XP 32bit only though ;)).

Micron (OCZ?) and Samsung (Trans?) not great together :D - no CL7 with all four sticks in, and nothing higher than 800mhz on any divider.

Memtest86+ 4 x pass before this Windows run, so 'stable' as far as tested. Everest Read and Latency are hopeless, but 32M time seems reasonable.

Could some people who have time, please post what make and model of RAM modules you are using, and also what stable OC speed you've managed to get out of it. I have Kingston HyperX 1625 modules which I've read can get up to 1720MHz, not the highest but at CL7 still respectable. I'm asking incase I need to change my modules to 1800MHz versions incase I want to OC higher than my RAM will allow.

Question, if you look at the Rampage Extreme as fitted in a case, there is an Asus heatsink at the top right of the board, it's the typical gray slotted fins, with the spring screws through the back of the board. Have either of you replaced this heatsink with copper as well? I think I'll have enough Enzotech copper heatsinks to cover whatever is under that heatsink.

i haven't changed it and to be honest, a heat sink there isn't really necessary. hell, even the MOSFETs for the NB are optional i would imagine. these components are designed to run high temps and most boards don't have them sinked. most of the cooling solutions on motherboards these days is nothing more than branding.

Hi Aln688, the same goes for me as with 3oh6 above - i've left this H/S stock.

As for memory see pt no in my sig and post #1506 for my 24/7 stable settings. The Doms are working at 1880FSB (940 memory bus) which is not a huge overclock as I feel that my quad is the limiting factor here at 470 but the timings are tight at 7-7-7-20 CR T1 and common performance level 06 which converts to decent read bandwidth over 12k.

Ghostleader is having some good results with the same sticks combined his E8600 - see post #1512.

The Doms are the 3rd set of DIMS I have tried after having OCZ2000Mhz and G.Skill 1600Mhz. If you have not yet bought your memory then I would recommend 1800 or 2000 rated sticks so that the memory can keep up with your overclocks on the 1/2 divider.

Alright, thanks. I'm going to remove that heatsink just to see what's under it. If I'm going to rip out the entire Asus heatsink assembly, everything goes. I'll try to use some of the Enzotech copper heatsinks on whatever is under the stock.

You mentioned 1/2 divider, considering my RAM is 1625, if to start with I had a 406 FSB, then could I keep my memory linked to the FSB? This would mean 406 * 4 = 1624? Is this the same as 1:1 divider?

My aim is for a 425 FSB, which will give me a 3.6GHz on the CPU and 1700MHz on the RAM. From what I've read about my Kingston HyperX modules, the RAM can OC to around 1720MHz but still retaining CL7.

This is my first Intel and DDR3 system after many years of AMD and DDR2 so anyone please correct me if I'm wrong. The FSB freq is quad pumped so 4x the bus speed where the divider is the FSB to DRAM ratio so half of the effective FSB freq with the 1:2 divider. Then with DDR memory (DDR=Double Data Rate) the memory speed is multiplied by 2 for it's effective frequency which then equals the FSB freq (so yes 1:1 there). By using another divider the memory can be ran slower - and more recently faster (asynchronously). Usually running components synchronously yields better performance. Think of the divider as the fraction of the FSB frequency but then double that result for the memory frequency. Hope i've not made a hash of that and i'm not teaching you how to suck eggs (as the saying goes!). What you have in mind sounds fine and perfectly achievable after binning the HPA.

The 2x1Gb configuration in the white sockets seems to be the most clockable on this board.

I'm not exactly clear on a few points, and anyone can jump in to answer if they want. Is it true that to overclock the RAM, it's best just to have 2 x 2GB modules? Or can I have 4 x 2GB modules? Ideally I'd like 8GB of RAM. I got the idea that to overclock RAM, it's not viable to have 8GB in there.

Currently I have already bought the Kingston HyperX DDR3 1625 modules, 2 x 2GB of them. From reading reviews they can overclock to 1720 at least, one review site pegged them at 1810 but at CL9. I'm considering returning them to buy the Corsair DDR3 1800 modules the same as what you have.

But, if I buy the Corsair 1800 modules and end up running them at 1700 all the time, would I be as well just to keep the Kingston's? As said, I want to overclock the RAM for a 425 FSB, but I'd also like 8GB at the same time.

its best to have 1 512 or 2x 1 gig, 2x2 gigs doesnt overclock as well and most of all never fill 4 slots

vNB: 1.51v
GTLs:
CPU 0/2: +50mv
CPU 1/3: +10mv
NB: +40mv
1.5v SB: 1.55v

Others on auto

With this strap I was able to boot at tRD = 8 and Pass dual PI 32M
With 1.41v vNB I got BSOD right before I saw the desktop
With 333/1066 divider the machine was bootable but BSOD when loading Windows using tRD = 8

What's interesting is, compare with the anaxxtech's review (Rampage Formula)
It has a formula about the calculation if the machine will be able to POST or not using a certain tRD.
While 333/1066 divider's value is bigger then 200/667 in terms of theory we should be able to boot up and load to windows without a problem using the same tRD value.
The problem is, with 333/1066 divider tRD @ 8 is completely unstable while 200/667 can boot up and pass dual 32M, even memset to tRD = 7 for a memory benchmark (possible to pass PI as well, haven't tried)
Any suggestions and comments on that?

And, I have a problem on overclocking my CPU to 4.5Ghz, will post the problem later. Still looking for assisstance :(

Sounds great, Rob2k. One thing I do know, DDR2 is 2 x the FSB (in otherwords DDR2 fetches data twice per clock cycle), where as DDR3 is 4 x the FSB (...or four fetches per clock cycle). I learned this after reading lots of reviews on RAM modules and the overclocking section of the articles.

I understand the FSB divider now, it's merely a way to disconnect the FSB from the speed of the RAM. I suspect using anything except a 1:1 divider will very slightly impact performance of the system as a whole. When you say "synchronously", I think you mean 1:1 ratio with the FSB to RAM.

Great, thanks for explaining! I'm glad my plan sounds alright, my Enzotech heatsinks arrived today, going to start removing the heatpipe assembly and install the Enzotech's one by one. I went with the Noctua NC-U6 Northbridge heatsink, very small but tough device. 3oh6 recommended a fan to install on this but I'm unsure I need one if I'm only running 425 FSB? Maybe I do, as I said, I'm unsure.

Well I may sell my HPA on eBay, but then again I may save it incase I have to send the board back to Asus for warranty claims. I'll get lots of photographs of replacing the HPA with Enzotech copper heatsinks, this is a great thread and I've learned a lot from it. I want to extend this thread by posting more pictures and potentially helping others in the path to lowering temperatures by replacing the HPA with alternatives.

Hello ci2kla and :welcome: - I'm sure there is more reading to be done on the tRD (Performance Level) and my understanding on this is very limited. I have had mine always set to AUTO which sets it to 6. I tried 5 manually once and it did not boot past the bios post.

We should all send our HPA's back to Asus so they realise what a cr@p job they have done :D but as you say its probably best to hold onto it for warranty or in case you sell the board in the future as all of the new replacement cooling can be taken off and used again.

What CPU and O/S will you be using ?.

I plan to fit SLF-1 at the w/e as from Expat Griz it sounds like the S/B will run at least 10 degrees cooler than with the CNB-S1L. To be honest stick with the parts you have so far, once the system is built if you are unhappy with the performance of any part then look to swap them out. Memory reviews are a useful guide but only if they are using a similar platform, CPU architecture and cooling as the restriction may lay elsewhere. To answer your question about running memory slower than its rated speed then see post #1471 - generally it can be ran with tighter timings and less voltage and then the extra headroom may be used later after a change elsewhere in the system eg, if you went to W/C.

Try PL6 and pull in the channel A and see what you can get. If you can POST but BSOD in windows you may need a pump of vNB or so IMO.

BTW, does anyone have clue on my E8400? I can't pass ORTHOS still...small FFTs failed in the first loop. While using single core version go on 11 hrs without a problem (only stress one core). Please help...

I don't think Asus cares to be honest, I've never had to request support from them but don't rate them very highly either.

My operating system will be Windows XP Professional x64, the operating system that is based on Windows Server 2003, just the 64-bit version.

As for CPU, I have the Intel Q9550 2.83GHz, which I'm aiming to get up to 3.6GHz. Thanks, I'll stick to the RAM I have, it will go up to 1700MHz I'm sure, pointless to buy 1800 speed RAM and run it at 1700MHz, just an un-necessary expense.

If you are aiming for 3,6 you should consider to run FSB 450 and RAM at 1800 (CAS 7, tRD6), it´s gonna be a pretty awesome 24/7 setup.

For predicting 'allowable' POSTs, I've not had much success with the tRD equation either - I found settings that wouldn't actually POST came up as allowable using (my understanding of) the formula.

I came to the conclusion that the fixed values (for FSB range) given in the A/Tech Rampage Formula article, only applied to DDR2 (it's a DDR2 article of course). I think the 'tRD Calculator' at OCZ uses the same values and is for DDR2 only. Can anyone confirm one way or another? :shrug:

Anyway, I found in tests on the 333 strap and 5:8 divider (333/1066 from your description?), that as a general rule (on my board at least and up to 625FSB), the tRD value must be at least one higher than the CL value for POST to be allowable. eg CL7/tRD8 or higher and CL8/tRD9 or higher are allowable for POST using 5:8 divider.

As a general rule for the 1:2 divider (at least between 450 and 515FSB, and again maybe just on my board ;)), the tRD value may be one lower than the CL value with POST still allowable. eg CL7/tRD6 or higher and CL8/tRD7 or higher are allowable for POST using 1:2 divider.

At some point below 450FSB - maybe at 400 and below but haven't tested yet - the 1:2 divider appears to allow the tRD value to be two lower than CL value. As cstkl1 showed a few posts back tRD 5 can be used with CL7. I suppose the 1:2/CL7/tRD5 combination is allowed by the lower FSB level.

So far I have found that Pull-ins obey the same 'rules' so, for example, no POST with pull-in to 6 from tRD7 with CL8/1:2 at 450-500FSB.
As rob2k mentioned finding with tRD5, pulling-in to 5 from tRD6 may not be allowed with CL7 either, depending on FSB.

Of course none of this explains the instability you found on the 333 strap but not with the 200 strap, since you were able to POST with CL7/tRD8, as expected.

I haven't tested at all yet on the 200 strap but cstkl1's findings with 1:2 at 400FSB with 4x1GB, using low vNB (1.25V) and CL7/tRD5, look interesting too. I've only gone above 515FSB using 5:8 (333 strap). Will try some 200 strap runs to see what I get in terms of vNB/stability/performance :D

I've been using Moderate/Strong/Stronger for Clock Twister, trying to offset my lack of decent CL7/1T clocks and that also contributes to my higher vNB requirement.

Second screen shows how much extra I would need to reach about the same Read but still with higher latency for 2T. Wouldn't fancy trying to stabilise at 490FSB with tRD 6 though :D

I can get by with 425 FSB, the multiplier on my Q9550 is 8.5, 425 * 8.5 = 3612, which means the RAM is 425 * 4 (for DDR3) = 1700. Also my Q9550 is the E0 stepping CPU, I don't know if that means it runs cooler or not.

The RE is beeing upped extremely much here in price, in sweden har it costs now 3700kr, thats hard translated to 460 dollars...

You're not kidding !!! - £375 for a RE2 mobo !!. When I bought the RE in July for £270 I thought I must have been mad especially when you consider I stripped off the original cooling and spent another £55 on Enzotech and Thermalright heatsinks.

Incidentally the RE has increased in price to £282 for some strange reason :shrug:

its only locked upwards so lower the multiplier in bios down and up the fsb to maintain same cpu speed and with the higher fsb it'll be quicker

An update to this - it's actually the 200 strap, not FSB level, that seems to allow tRD values to be two lower than CL value (1:2 divider only tested so far).

Between (at least) 400-500FSB, tRD 6 is available with CL8 on 200 strap (but not on 266 or 333 straps). Similarly tRD 5 ok with CL7 up to......

Not sure yet about performance - no noticable effect in Everest or 32M for 200 strap over 266 or 333 straps, despite being able to use lower tRD values.

Does some other (hidden?) timing run looser when using the 200 strap ?

Just working through this really - any thoughts guys ?

The pictures from another forum thread demonstrates perfectly, here we have an X38 board (very similar to X48 layout), with the Noctua NH-U12P, Thermalright HR-05 SLI/IFX and slimline fan, exactly the same parts I'm planning on using, please look here:

This plan seems to work, I've mapped it all out. I wanted the Noctua 80x80x25mm fan, but there isn't enough room between the HR-05 and the U12P CPU heatsink.

@ Cheapseats - Thats some good information on the straps. I can only boot on the 333 & 400 straps so it maybe FSB or hardware dependant.

Had a few freezes over the weekend within 30 seconds of coming out of sleep. Just modified the power profiles for now so it never goes into this mode. Any ideas as to what may be causing this ?.

ok for 400 fsb
it goes like this

for strap 333 with strong/stronger no much diff at 1 T
is roughly = strap 200 with light at 2T at tRD 5.

so i guess its just a balance of tRD's and clock twister...
so with the straps and running 2:1 ratios.. choose better balance on the NB stress for certain clock skews..

base on certain fsb to reach stronger clock skews ure jump from strong to stronger is quite big...
so to choose like in between values
i guess would be manupalation of skews and tRD's either set or by pull in's.

but damn man
this board sux that it cant do 4gb at 2000mhz...
and 4x1gb kit still has that hanging issue which doesnt even make sense y it has in the first place.

previously with p5e3 all the hanging issue was because of undervolted nb or vdimm

also this board has the same issue with the maximus 2 formula..
theres a max nb voltage u can go with certain fsb voltage.
maximus extreme didnt suffer this but that board to get it superstable at 4.5ghz was a no go...

interesting crazy board eh..

That sounds complicated !!. I have used SKEWS for CPU, NB and DRAM channels A & B but have no idea what the clock twister set to AUTO is actually doing. Just glad that I have a working setup at last. Yes it is VERY crazy .......... but fun :D

@ Aln688 - It looks like you have missed H/S from these components ....

Was this deliberate ?. There is a good post #313 from EF where he used a digital temperature probe to determine what gets hot and what doesn't.

running 4X1GB here too at the mo.
for me, the PC would hang after sometime of use until i set the cpu/nb skews and the mem clk skews.
admittedly, i'm not going for any huge overclocks though. i just wanted some stable 24/7 settings (with no lockups) so i'd have something to fall back on when oc'ing

for now, i'm running 500x8, mem at 1600 7-6-5-15-1N. i've passed 12hrs of memtest and had no probs gaming etc.

Ha ha, you get the prize for observation! Yes I know about those two MOSFETs thanks, I just ran out of MOS-C1s (the small 2x2 heatsinks) as I'm upgrading the cooling on two boards. I've reordered more though, should arrive Wednesday. Thank you for alerting me, much appreciated. I'll repost more pictures of my board once those two MOSFETs are covered and my Thermalright HR-05 SLI/IFX is installed. Cheers.
