Because the AUTO values overvolt like mad!! Seriously put your voltage settings couple notches above auto and you have nothing to worry about. The GTL values as everything else have a default setting which the BIOS should provide to you. Max values for PLL and fsb termination voltage are 1.60 and 1.38. You should never go above them atleast not 24/7 anyway.

And if you haven't run the most recent Prime95(V25.6:shrug:) atleast 8 hours per large and small FFT:s your not stable imo. I just ran all the 3 tests available alteast 9 hours a piece. I haven't checked the IntelBurntest myself but I hear it's very good at finding problems with stability very fast.

PS. If you decide to use Prime95 you should have the round off checking setting enabled otherwise it's useless to run the program.

I ran prime small FFTs and intel burn test and it was stable ; but yesterday while i was palaying a game i got application error ( some mem error )
Then ran a blend test and got error on core0 .
I still get error only on core0 .
Btw , you've said that the max for FSB Term. is 1.38 .
I have it 1.48V :confused:

Tulu - run your ram slower, to take it out of the equation when overclocking your cpu. Doing both at once is bound to cause issues and confuse you, as you can't pin down the offending piece of hardware when there is instability.

Find max cpu clock, then adjust the ram to suit, as you will gain more from running cpu at max and having ram slower than having flying ram and a slower cpu.

My advice was adressed to xTKxhom3r but should apply to you regarding the
stability testing. I may have been wrong on the voltage subject as it depends
on the processor used. My 45nm Q9450 is very sensitive but I can't say anything about your proc.

Leeghoofd please help us on the voltage subject regarding the q6600 and e8400 as I answered before I thought about it.:ROTF:

Well worth getting a DMM for testing voltages on these boards. I think all boards and even bios' are slightly different. A DMM can be had for peanuts these days.

Okey,
i lowered my rams to 851MHz FSB : DRAM 1:1 now.
I ran prime , i got error again on core0 just 5 mins. after this time. :shrug:
I just want to know that , i 've ran small FFT's 3 hours and 5 rounds of Intel burn test it was stable ; i wonder that if passes smallFFTs and IBT ,couldn't i say cpu speed stable ?

I've ran as 851MHz @ 5-5-5-18 trfc 55 @ 2.1 V

Edit: Now lowered FSB to 413MHz ( 413 x 8 ) and set rams to 826MHz @ 5-5-5-18 trfc 55 @2.1 V

As I stated I'm not at all sure about the voltages anymore, because you have a different processor than mine and this is my first Intel platform I've ever overclocked. With Q9450 the values I stated are those but they may not be the ones that apply to your case.

I AM NOT AT ALL SURE ABOUT THE VOLTAGE ISSUE SO DON'T TAKE MY WORD ON IT.
Just to be sure you could lower your fsb termination voltage to under 1.40, ~1.38 maybe and if everybody agrees you can raise it when your sure it's safe. That way you don't break anything and enjoy the comp little bit longer.

On the core 0 issue you could try raising your vcore or gtl reference voltage for that core a notch or two.

The stability in my opinion is a matter of own preference. In my case I ran Prime 95 Large FFT for 21 hours, small FFT for ~10 hours and blend for ~9 hours just to be sure that when I compile programs in Gentoo there's no error
resulting from my overclock. If you consider you have not some critical application that needs absolute staibility then why worry so much? If you do
you should use all 3 programs (IntelBurntest, Prime95, OCCT) IMHO to be sure
the rig is completely stable at all times. And not some 1 hour this and 2 hours of that but rather 8 hours or overnight etc...

Here is the good news ; i 've lowered the FSB to 413MHz and now it's stable for about 70 mins. :yepp:
It seems that 1.37500 Vcore was low for 425MHZ FSB.
Now , should i go on to run blend or stop it and run a small FFTs ; so what is my next step ?

Does every voltage setting overvolt? Or only vDIM, vFSB, vPLL and vNB like in the picture posted a few pages back?

No definitive answer on that yet, we know the measure points for the SB but I haven't pulled my board out and measured it.

Tried and failed on core0 , will try GTL Ref ( 0/2 , 1/3 ) = 0.690 now.

Also try increasing vcore to 1.40 - 1.42v (bios) it may just be your cpu. You should be safe up to at least 1.45v vcore with the 65nm if you can keep the heat under control.

But the weather is too hot here , my room is appr. 30C now.
My cores are max: 67 67 61 62 with realtemp with 1.38125V for now . ( at that moment it makes 8k test with blend )
I know that these temps won't be so high anytime except torturing.
There is another question btw , what are the safe temps for torturing,bench in realtemp ?

Old 65nm chips are safe up to 1,55V with good air cooling or 1.5V with usual decent aftermarket cooling.

Fair enough about the temps, that's why I mentioned it, not knowing where you live or your climate.

Hope the GTL REF gets you that FSB stable. Many people even run 0.70x (0/2, 1/3) on the 6600's. Also try reducing the FSB term voltage to around 1.42v an using 0.70x - 0.72x GTL REF. Lowering the vFSB will reduce your temps slightly.

Yeah, it helped. :) I got 378-380FSB stable at 1.5125v BIOS (2 notches above 1.5) for 1.504v load according to CPU-Z. It's got me 3.4GHz, but I can't seem to go any higher. If I set a higher FSB or change my RAM speed in BIOS, when I save and exit, it won't POST. I flip the switch on the power supply, reboot and then it tells me that my OC failed. Once I'm in Windows, if I do a shutdown or restart through Windows, it reboots fine. Warm reboot from BIOS though, won't work. :confused:

I was hoping my 975x chipset was holding me back, but it seems my B2 E6600 is not a good clocker... :(

I want to OC my RAM now and tighten the timings, but I think it's on it's way out and dieing, so I can't get very far. I increase the voltage, tighten the timings slightly (4-4-4-12 @ 800mhz @ 2.16v instead of 5-5-5-15 @ 757mhz @ 1.98) and it won't boot. I KNOW this RAM is capable of doing that easily because I did it on my old board. It would do 950mhz 4-4-4-10 @ 2.2v all day stable on my old 975x DFI.

Don't know what to do... 333 and 400 strap change nothing. :confused: :shrug: :(

Cyptik, help me learn something here....Why are you telling him to raise the voltage AND the GTLref? Raising the voltage automatically raises the GTLref...right? Or did I misundersand?

Personally, I find it MUCH easier to find stable settings when messing with ONE item at a time...In Tulu's case, I would have set the GTLref at stock (.67), then ONLY touched the VTT voltage. Once I got it stable, THEN I would lower the VTT and raise the GTLref.

If you download the Intel Storage Manager Utility under Other on the Asus website site then extract the file then go into the drivers boom there they are. I just updated my raid storage controller driver by pointing windows to the folder appropriate which is 64bit.. I think that might... might be my issue here. I am on 0803 BIOS right now and scared to try 1102 again :P . I noticed Vista was using the ICH8R / ICH9R Driver..

Well I went to the 1102 and it stopped talking to my hard drives at the progress bar and the progress bar just kept going. I could see where the hard drives stopped getting hit because my hd light stopped flashing. I went to the 1103 and it went right through to windows??? I get into windows and open ie and go here and start typing and boom it locked up... I am able to run 0803 though which I am on right now. There is something they changed after 0803 that it does not like.. Anybody??

Actually thats not recommended. These boards seem to adjust voltages beyond healthy levels sometimes (especially for CPU and NB).

Tulu, I experienced similar things (different cores failing at different times), I bumpe dup my NB.. Where is yours at?

Question re: DMM. I seem to be getting different values depending on whether I use a molex as ground or the mobo as ground. Also, different molex connectors give me slightly different values. I have a Radio Shack 22-810 DMM. Any ideas why I can't get a consistent reading?

Tulu - seems like that cpu is going to be stubborn. You could try lowering vFSB back to 1.42 - 1.44v, and raise GTL's one 0.05x step at a time up to perhaps 0.75x.

I think you may need to just give it more vcore to get it stable at 3.4GHz, some 6600's just won't do it easily, pity about your hot climate though. Perhaps try 3.33GHz at the same vcore you are at now? I don't think you will get solid stability out of the GTL or vFSB adjustment, but you could possibly raise the max bootable/benchable FSB by a few MHz.

@jas420221 - I suggested that because it's the quick and easy method to see if higher GTL and vFSB will assist the overclock - as you know, GTL is derived from vFSB, and both GTL & FSB has shown to help certain people OC quads, especially the 65nm's - trying each at a time of course is more accurate, but I wanted to get somewhere fast, rather than take days to establish whether it was going to help or not.

Polizei, how could Vista have native support for a device that wasn't in existence when Vista was released? All you need to do is update the driver on the Vista install. At least with Vista you can do it with a flash drive instead of having to use a floppy. The Asus disk has the utility to create what you need.

Hey guys. About the setting "Execute Disable Bit" I have been enabling this but have seen a lot of people disable it. What exactly is the reason for disabling if it is supposed to help with virus protection? I thought it would be a good thing to have on. Of course I have my own Anti-Virus/Anti-spyware/Firewall and do not use the crap that come with windows. Should I be turning this off?

It would be stupid to disable it period, kinda like hardware virtualization.

Why would it be stupid to disable it? By hardware virtualization do you mean "Intel Virtualization Tech"? Unless you are running multiple OS then I do not see why you would enable that.

Tulu, why are you using so much FSBv? I am completely stable at 1.32 for 425mhz. I spent a long time at 3.4ghz with my Q6700 at 340x8 and all I needed was 1.26NB and 1.32FSBv.

Ha you beat me to it - I was going to suggest going back to low vFSB, low vPLL and starting again.

Tulu, try that, set 1.32v FSB and, 1.52v PLL and 1.38 vcore, set GTL refs to 0.670x (both) and see what FSB you can get up to stable.

I do not mess with GTL Ref at all. For PLL you can go as high as 1.60 and then work your way down to as low as 1.52. My Q6700 has a high VID 1.3250 so I needed 1.41vcore to be stable at 3.4ghz. For 425mhz FSB you should be fine very near 1.26NB, 1.32FSBv and CPU PLL 1.52-1.60. If you are pushing you ram really hard you might need to use more NB but I never did. You need to make sure your CPU vcore is correct by testing with small fft's first for 1 hour at a time lowering each time it passes until it doesn't, then go back up and try to get that to pass about 3-6hours maybe more if you want good stability, I find that I can not pass ram tests with OCCT unless my vcore passes at least 6 hours of small fft's. After I get my vcore set then I switch to OCCT 2 hour Ram test followed by a 12-18 hour blend or mix with either OCCT or Prime95 for final stability.

I see,
but i've tested my Vcore with SmallFFTs for 3 hours and at the same time i've ran Intel burn test for 5 rounds and was stable. ( with 425 FSB and with only 1.36875 Vcore )
Yesterday while i was playing a game i got application error ( mem. adress error ) than i ran memtest86+ but there was no error.
I tried to run blend test and started to get errors .

You are probably having stability problems with your ram. Set it to as close to 1200mhz as you can get and right at your stock voltage for your ram. Disable Static Read control and leave Read training and Mem OC charger on auto. Set your Performance level to 10 and leave your clock twister on auto. Set your vcore back to 1.36 or 1.37 and CPU PLL 1.56-1.60. Run that and see what happens with GTL's on auto and 1.26nb and 1.32FSBv. Memtest86 will pass even though your blends and ram tests fail in windows. I do not like memtest86+.

Been thinking. If you really want to rule out your NB and FSBv you can set NB to 1.30-1.32 and FSBv to 1.32-1.34. If that fails then your ram is almost for sure causing your problem. I use a 65nm Quad like you and Leeghoofd here taught me most of what I know about this motherboard. Unfortunately for us there are not many people using 65nm Quads and this board so we are kind of left guessing what FSBv and NBv we should be using.

Your at 413fsb x8? If you want 3.4ghz really bad then I would quit your blend and go back to 425. Use my setting but maybe start just a bit higher at first with FSB and NB volts and then work your way down if your wish.


EDIT: Tell us your complete ram settings. Make sure they are set to stock levels, 1200mhz and whatever your recommended voltage is. Disable Static Read Control at first you can always tweak that later, set to PL10 and leave your twister on auto. I guess you can use MemOC Charger if you like, it has never caused me issues. You just want your Ram to pass a blend or Ram test with OCCT right now. When you get your NB/FSB/RAM setting stable you are good to go ahead and start tweaking your ram by lowering the PL and using Static Read Control

Can you do a bandwith test in everest with those settings plz ?... then try to go one setting lower on the ram speed (I never used 425FSB before, no idea which speed it is) and enable static read control, might give ya way better bandwith then ya current settings... also I think a lower pl can be expected then... I'm not at home so I cannot verify them settings...

Those setting look good to try. I have CPU TM Function disabled. If Leeghoofd helps you, (he taught me) I would go with anything he says. As far as stopping your current blend that is up to you, if that setting that your are blend testing with is where you want to be at then maybe you finish that to your liking. Tulu, if this helps these are the complete full setting I used to get stable at 3.4ghz. You will need to use your own Vcore and CPU PLL though as your chip seems to be a better overclocker then mine. Also you might need more ram volts since my kit runs stock at 1.8-19v.

Has anybody took the heatpipe thingies away and used some aftermarket cooler
with it? My SB gets very hot and was wondering if I could cool it with water or
bigger HS. My overclock seems to be limited by my crappy proc and cooling but
every little thing I could do to improve the situation I would do.

hey tulu try undervolting your ram and underclocking it i have some ocz flexII 1200 ram and i could never get it stable at 1200 with 2.1-2.3 (rated voltage) but one day i decided to run it at 1000 (auto strap) and with a lower voltage 1.9 and boom 100% :banana::banana::banana::banana:ing stable no joke 1.:banana::banana::banana::banana:ing 9 dude ant its stable but if i push it to 2.0 or 1.98 its un:banana::banana::banana::banana:ing stable even at 1000mhz so give it a try might work for you too....i think this board doesnt like to play nice with ocz ram or with high voltage ram i dont know....

Can running the cpu at the lowest possible vcore damage it in some way? Probably a stupid question, but anyway! :P

No, undervolting is not going to cause the cpu damage, it's exactly the same as not supplying sufficient voltage to an overclocked processor - errors in processed data are the only ramifications. However with a minimum vcore of ~0.85 (as PCS said) you are going to be very limited speed wise, probably lower than stock.

Oh, and concerning the OCZ ram issue, it use to be D9 based, and have no issues with high volts etc, however now it is based on another IC tyoe, it seems to be very different. However if you cannot get it stable at stock speeds, voltage and timings, rma it.

You would have to grab those files out of that folder after extracting the file like I had mentioned with another PC then put it on a usb stick and jump back to your pc you are going to install on and use the stick to load the driver at the f6 screen.

Any way side note, Asus kind of pissed me off last night the tech I spoke with Michael Level 3 Indiana helpdesk, didn't update my case# after I spoke with him for an hour and never called me back when he said he would. I am going to send this one back I guess but, what I noticed is that after 0803 they implemented the cpu margin optimization and I'm begining to wonder if for some reason my cpu doesn't like it any more after my other board crapped out on me. I wonder if the mother board blew out what ever that setting is on my cpu.. I still haven't called back yet I hung up on Joe to give him a taste of his own medicine. I will probably run by what I'm thinking to the highest level tech possible over there and see what they think. If it ends up being they blew out my cpu with that setting whatever it might be, I am going to have them get me a new one.

Vista never had that F6 screen like XP.

I gave up with the floppy/ICH10R drivers for XP and that's why I'm on Vista now, because I thought Vista had ICH10 drivers installed already.

I haven't pushed the vdimm over 2.30v, but the real idle vdimm was 0.01v above bios set, which increased to 0.02v above bios set under load. I would assume it would be similar at higher voltages too, but you would have to measure with a DMM at idle and load to verify that on your board, as myself and another guys measurements showed quite different real voltages at the same bios settings.

It may be something that a new bios can solve, or a limitation of the P45 chipset. The DDR3 boards are having terrible trouble getting anything stable when memory load is 'high' (DDR 1300+) apparently due to 'noise' to which the P45 chipset is very sensitive to. I have a feeling the P45 is not going to be good for high stable memory OC'ing, (which is proven with the DDR3 boards struggling to get anything over 1333 stable) just good for around the 600 FSB mark with 45nm duals.

However with poor memory latency and speed, and a high PL at any given FSB/ram speed, the P45 seems to be inferior to the X38/X48. P45 seems to be quite disappointing actually.

I'm not sure about that, i have hit 590 FSB (limited by the low vcore of 1.32v I was using), and can easily bench at 571 FSB. I also know Leeghoofd hit 600FSB, so I think PCI-E lock works. Also leeghoofd tested and couldn't boot the pc when he manually set the PCI-E freq to 110+ so I would assume if it went above that due to PCI-E lock failure, it would not boot either.

What comments/testing results lead you to your hypothesis?

There are plenty of people that run pcie bus to 110Mhz or so... Its just if your board can handle it is the thing.

i have tried 101, 103, 105, and 110mhz. 110 fails, but then again i cant verify it is 110, might actually be 135 depending on if the PCI-E lock is working correctly or not.

setFSB always shows too high a PCI-E clock. (yup, 125mhz @ 500fsb) it might be right but i dont trust it w/o some sort of 2nd opinion.

Ah, that's ok. I can just download them and install them through Windows? That works, I suppose. I was going to say... my RAID performance looked an awful lot like my old ICH7R benchies, and I thought ICH10R would be better.

nice suggestion! i have not tried underclocking the PCI-E, will try that next.

the problem im having....
im easily Prime95 stable @ 525fsb with any multiplier 6x thru 8x. (its a e8200) however 3D benching and gaming randomly falls off the face of the earth starting @ 505fsb. no amount of voltage or downtweaking helps in the slightest.

i tried jumpin to 533, 550, 566 hoping the lock would reengage, but that didnt work. CPU benching yes, 3D benching no.

also...
@ 400fsb i have zero artifacts, but as i approach 500fsb a very small amount of artifacts will appear in certain places. not randomly but in certain places. could easily have overlooked them if i wasnt paying close attention for them.

i swapped out a few vid drivers sets, downclocked the card, changed quality settings, etc, nothing helped there.

i cant help thinking this reminds of the days before AGP lock were depending on your vid card you might have to jump 33mhz fsb in order to retain AGP lock until of course it just ran out of dividers and the AGP would overclock.

EDIT: i almost forgot... the "3D PCI-E problem" also happens in the 480-499fsb range, no 3D benching there but 500fsb is OK.

I am fully aware what PCI-E does....... but it could be anything else what is causing it not passing 500fsb... Strap/dividers and many other things

Guys i had some weird findings, I appearently flashed my board to BIOS 1201 as soon I received it. It came however shipped with 0803, So i dont have any idea if the previous BIOS might be better. The weird thing with this bios is if I want to use a a VTT of 1.12 I cant boot normally if I pass 1.22NBv , if I use 1.24NB or more a VTT of at least 1.16v is required for 400fsb or higher. And I do have some occasional Blackscreens on boot sometimes randomly.
Is there any better BIOS around then 1201? ( poiting @ 1103/0803)?

I found out what was wrong with my setup. The new option called CPU Margin Enhancement I believe not by it right now at work.. Apparently it has been causing issues on the 9450 for some reason. This option is to enhance overclocking FSB wise. I guess my chip just got fedup with the setting at the point that my RMAed board stopped working. Supposebly if you set it to compatible you can land more of an overclock.. FYI for everyone here. They are going to take my specs and try to duplicate it and when they do they will send me a beta to try to resolve the issue for me..

P.S. you load the driver by extracting the files as mentioned on previous post and go to device manager and open the storage controllers part and right click on the Intel stoage controller which wil say ICH8R / ICH9R and click on the update driver software I do believe it says and the rest is pointing it towards the drivers.. The tech I spoke with knew what he was doing.:up::clap:

I am testing an E8600 on a P5Q-D.
401 X 10 is a breeze at 1.2v, quite amazing.
500 x 8 is not as stable.

Running 401 x 10 with DDR2 @ 1006, should I have the strap to Northbridge at AUTO (which it is now) or at some certain speed? How do you know what to set the strap to?

sorry for the n00b question, but how do you set 10:9 so i can run my fsb at 450 and my mem at 500? my 780i did it, but i can't figure it out on the p5q-d. also, how do you read the nb and sb temps on the mobo? does any of the included software monitor those temps?

btw...this p5q pisses on the 780i. i'm running 0.1v lower and 12C cooler at the same 3.6 ghz. so glad i upgraded!

default is .67 . try setting than manually for all cores (2 adjustments) reboot, see if it lasts longer or not.. if it doesnt, up them .01 until you hit .7 if that doesnt work, bump the vcore up one notch, and the gtl at .67 .
