I was thinking to go for 6 gb(3x2GB) Dominators @ 1600. Will it be a problem to run 6 GB of ram on 32 bit OS, as I know - it will only show 3 GB inside OS.

I am going to load 2 OS:
1. Win XP 32 bit (For work purpose - I need Sql 2000 32 bit and I cant spend $3k+ on SQL 2000 64bit Ver)
2. Vista Business Edition 64bit and run VMWare inside it to have Xp 32 Bit as guest OS.

Alright, why is 1600 supposed to be a better OC'er than a 1333 with tighter timings? Could somebody explain to me how these two would OC differently?

I was reading Saaya's Nehalem 101 thread and it stated that if you have a Extreme Edition you can simply raise the multi and oc the CPU that way without fiddling the BClock, is there a decrease in performance from doing this?

Also with DDR3-1600 ram, how does the 133 freq mutliply to DDR3 1600?

Any reason SQL 2000 x86 won't run in 32-bit compatibility mode? All the 32-bit apps I've installed thus far run just fine.. They just install themselves in 'Program Files (x86)' and run in WOW64 seamlessly.

Well - put the CPU under the F1 pot just to get a feel for what the CPU can / cant do

Cold boot bug at around -70 and cold bugs around -100

CPU: Retail i7 965EE
Board: Gigabyte EX58 Extreme
Memory: OCZ PC12800 DDR3 Triple

All my testing to date has been with the CPU between minus 50 - 60 degrees.

Have been having a play to try an find my max clock (havent tried too many tweaks yet) and think I have found me limit without turning off hyperthreading etc :weirdo:

Best WPrime 32 and PiFast runs at 4896

Best WPrime 1024 run at 4860

Best Super Pi 32M run at 4788

Will try some 3D benching tomorrow and see how 3DM06 and Vantage go :D

Whoops -back to 1.62 in bios - not sure how I did that :eek:

This will eventually go under my modded MachII - just perfect for these CPU's :up:

It's because of the integrated memory controller on the CPU now. I don't know how much the MC compares to the one AMD uses in terms of some MC's being weaker than others but if your CPU has a weak memory controller it can affect your overclocks. The more RAM you have installed and the higher the mem speeds you run the more stress you're putting on the MC. Increasing the CPU speed also increases the speed of the link between the CPU and MC so that's why high memory speeds become less stable the higher you overclock the core speed.

yeah, I got lucky with a pretty good cpu, makes up for my E8400, and my mediocre E8600:D. Mine starts eating vcore above 4.1, looks like yours does it a little earlier.

Just for the record... nobody has yet been able to achieve 4ghz stable, right? So whats the highest any person has been able to get 24/7 stable? 3.8ghz? 3.9 maybe?

Will I be able to run these triple channel at 1600 MHz on a Gigabyte X58 -Extreme board?

I don't mind loosening up the timing, but I am curious, will I need to get new RAM?

If they won't do 1600 MHz due to Vdimm, what do you think their max will be?

I should be getting my CPU and MB tomorrow, so if I need to get a new memory kit, I'd like to order it tonight and get it shipped next day.

Nothing prsonal but I wouldn't call this Prime stable in my book OCCT is not prime95...

The memory part I wont know til 6 months when I update to 3x2gb and windows 7 64 bit, (and probably 1800 speed to run 10 multi), as my xpsp3 32 bit wont use more than ~3.5.

maybe i940 is binned, and maybe better chance of getting 4 for that reason and can use less bclk to get there which gives you better chance for those chips that cant use high bclk, though my chip will do 20x200, max bootable bclk is 215. Or maybe I just got lucky in the chip lottery.

I didn't say my 965 is 4.65ghz stable M8. I can bench up to 4.65ghz on watercooling ;) In france we use to test our cpus with occt more than with prime. For me i can daily use my cpu at 4.2ghz with 1.34v, it never crash all day playing games or benching but to be "stable" the vcore has to be increase to 1.37v

Can you give some bios entries on how you set that up? It seems no one is putting bios entries.... Nor is there a template.

Certainly because only few settings had to be tune :p:
For me only:
-vcore 1.34v
-qpi/dram 1.35v
-vpll 1.8v
-vddr 1.66v

Loadlline calibration enabled and timings for 870mhz 88820 1T
Don't forget to disabled every useless cpu fonctions

Well regards to air cooling solutions, is much more difficult to get the system stable than with water cooling solutions. If I had a water setup then I would probably end up with 1.30 V for 4.2Ghz, no news about this. The maximum decibels that my system outputs is around 23 which beats most watercooling solutions concerning decibels. Cheaper, no need to manage and quiet.

Glad to hear someone besides myself bring up the issue of noise, this is my #1 hot button. You imply that your computer is quiet, could you elaborate as to type of cooling you have? My computer, a C2D with Tuniq 120, is very quiet, but my concern is that when I go i7 920 I'll have to crank up the fan noise. Suggestions?

The image below is my primary system specifications.

My first priority was and is to keep the system below 23 DB:

But How?

First: A case which will contain the output noise like Cosmos RC-1000

Second: The best air cooling solution to date [True Copper 2.0kg]

Third: 2 fans which will help to cool down the heatsink Noctua NF-P12 with a maximum output noise of 20DB. I have the case + CPU fans = 6 total and I plan to add 1 for the HD cooling all good quiet fans.

Fourth: My system will be 7 fans at maximum of 20 Decibels which at the end will not trespass 23DB.

Fifth: some people tell that I7 runs hotter than Penryn which I confirm it does, however much smarter than Penryn. The thermal work load is quite well balanced by the fact when 1 core gets hot then they switch to another core or make tasks using various cores which the temperature will never go beyond 90c at best. there are applications which use 8 cores however not fully by many tests made by me. So the point is by the time they make an program which utilizes 8 cores fully then will have good air cooling solutions around to cool down it or just buy the tick core codenamed westmere 32nm.

So no need to be aware about the temperature levels by any means, my focus is the sound that the system produces.

Right now:

Sound: less than 23DB
Temperature:
Idle: 56c
Load: +100c 8 logical cores 100%

It will not run over 100c by the fact it will drop the processor multiplier when it reaches 98c in order to reach reasonable temperatures.

What I'm saying is if we had not this feature then this processor would burn very fast. So as long as any of the cores of this processor does not reach 99c then is fine.

I am running a RE2 with a 920 O/C to 3.8 with 1.3 Vcore I cant seem to get 4ghz to run, I am watercooled also running prime95 with HT disable I gte 60-61-62-60 if I turn HT back on add +10C

I fail prime at 1.38125vcore at 3.9ghz with ht enabled after 10 minutes or so temps hitting 77c hottest core wc but 3.8ghz stable HT disabled 1.3v same as you x2beach

what is the purpose of the uncore frequency?@ 195x20 (3.9ghz) I have it at x17 (3230mhz) I know it has to be atleast 2x higher than dram multi but what effect does this have on OCing, doesnt seem to change anything stability wise from x17 to x20

Gigabyte x58 boards latest bioses lock the multi on turbo mode even on 8 threads loaded 100%.

Well if is a bug and not a feature is a nice bug , 200 extra mhz always welcome :cool:

But this reason most people got problems run 200x20 stable cos they prime95 at 4.2 ghz real

Bios F3, turbo works as intel intended. When TDP reaches a certain level, extra +1 multi is dropped. Bios F3, loading 1 or 2 cores with blend, and turbo still on, load 3 or 4 and turbo is off. This setting is useful for allowing turbo at same vcore as when turbo is turned off.

Bios F4's, this "TDP limit" is apparently turned off, just like you can disable speedstep, so that turbo enabled is practically giving you +1 multi, so you will need more vcore to be stable. If this is a hidden setting in bios, (at this point I would think it has to be), I wish GB would let us turn it on or off, ie make the setting visible....though I guess we can by changing bioses...There are pluses and minuses to both ways.

I agree control over that feature would be very cool it opens things up for 920 users if this is possible I would hope all the manufacturers would make this option available.. So actually you get a 21 multiplier all you have to do is enable turbo for 21 and disable for 20 that's great actually.. I don't see a negative side to this what so ever...

P.S. I finally stabilized the 920 at 4.0Ghz on the P6T Deluxe I will post some pics in a bit after I prime for a few more hours but I got 3 hours of prime95 in now and it looks like it's finally stable..

Yeah, I read about it some time ago, but I was not really able to find a proof for it. Stressing more than 1 or 2 cores/threads, multi's gonna drop - was all peeps were reporting, iirc. But I remember seeing results of a fixed turbo mode in some of the gigabyte testing threads first.

Those C0/C1 chips are bad to the bone... That guy is priming at 4.0Ghz with HT at 1.2 that's awesome haven't seen anything like that before...

i am shocked at all the posters trying to overclock and having very frustrating results with high temps...of course, anytime you are 1 ghz over default speed, on air, is doing very good in my book!;)

Good news for sure, I just bought the same cpu (exact!), mobo, and ram here in Canada. I pick it up friday morning with a Cooler Master V8, HIS 4870 1gb, PC&C 750 crossfire editon. Ran a search on the batch # and found this thread, I've been out of this for a while it should be fun.....

These are not bad chips by any means, 50% overclock on every chip is just amazing.

I did not expect nehalem to overclock more than 3.5Ghz on air to be honest.So these clocks are trully amazing, making the upgrade worth it in my opinion.

BCLK - 211 What voltage do you have to raise to attain this number? I read that you had to raise vtt. The highest BCLK I was able to attain was 205-207 and that is with 1.35 vtt(roughly).

I manually set by bios Qpi/Vtt at 1.28v. I have no problems of stability.:)

I am having problems tranferring files on 64bit Vista it's taking like 1 hour and 15 minutes to transfer 35.0GB of music anyone known why that would be??? Am I doing something wrong I am using WD Velicoraptor for my operating system and tranferring files between 2 Seagate 1TB drives internal..

Man, glad u posted that. I have the same problem as you do.
Very slow transfer... Reinstalled windows/drivers etc but still same problem.
No idea what else to check.

Try the new Intel inf utility ver. 9.1.0.1007
Use the -OVERALL command. I have fast transfers.

do you have SP1 installed?

have you tried to disable "Ready Boost" to see if that helps?

I have a C0/C1 as well, hopefully going to have it under water tomorrow. Did I get lucky getting 1 of these? Mine came from ebuyer.com on launch day incase any UK guys are interested.

I've only got 3.83GHz here and I am on air cooling. Still I'm happy because it's much faster than my Q6600. Also I've finally got SLi on an Intel platform with massive bandwidth to boot.

You have not installed it? The older ver. is on the P6T CD for the x58.

You want to use the -OVERALL command found in the readme.txt

-OVERALL

I created a directory called Intel. I placed the update utility in there. And created a shortcut. In my case C:\Intel\INF_allOS_9.1.0.1007_PV.exe -OVERALL

look, Intel uses 9.1.0.1007. Read your MB pdf.

You can OC all you want. The OS set-up is just as important for performance.
