Be careful what you wish for. No telling what they will replace it with or how long it may take. It is odd though that John's i reading correctly. This seems to be very rare from what I have seen. I wonder if it is just a quirky read problem or if there really is that much difference in the core temps on some chips. it would be nice to be able to understand this phenomena. I've have a hard time understanding why after all this time we can't get more accurate temp readings at least at the bios level on most motherboards.
It would be interesting if you could isolate each core and see if the one that reads so high atv idle would fail a torture test much sooner than one that shows a lower temp at idle. Maybe you could run an individual core "affinity" test using Superpi or prime or something?
thanks...he is doing ok except bleeding out of his "new" pee hole (boy dog)...he had "huge" multiple stones in his urethra behind his penis...he is 12 years old and he has a genetic disease called "cushing's disease" which causes the stones to form...it is tantamount to having diabetes...i give him a drug which acts like a chemo drug to kill the outter couple of layers of his adrenal gland which is over-producing cortisone...the prescription strength for the drug is elusive since the dynamics internally fluctuate a lot!
i've already stress all four cores at stock speed and cores #0 never moves off 51C...stays the same for idle!
i'm going to try to call intel today to see if i can get an RMA out of them....i truly would like accurate temps over a very high overclock...i could live with 4 ghz and be happy.

I am not sure if I was the John mentioned in your post but I have relapped my HSF and still have similar results, I'm 99.9% certain it is nothing to do with the mounting or the cooling solution used (Stock Intel XE cooler) I have even set the Fan into performance mode (screaming loud 2800RPM!) and still no difference. Have experimented with disabling C1E, Speed Step and Thermal Monitor and also Auto or Manual Voltage
Still no differences.

i just got off the phone with Intel tech support...they will NOT replace or even RMA my QX9650 with this off the wall temp readouts that you and i have!
the guy was basically reading me the party line...basically, he says if it isn't performance related they will not give you an RMA.
he got me to download the latest Intel Utility to read the processor and he said this utility doesn't work on all boards...guess what, it would not install on my DFI X38...try it on your board to see if it will work: http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd...u/download.htm
he said that third party software reading temps is not supported by Intel and therefore, can not be used to support my case...that is why he wanted to me use this software to read out the processor temp.
i am going to have to write a letter to Intel in oregon to complain...this guy 's name was Darwin and he is located in costa rica.
i am really disapointed in Intel and this tech support guy not even giving me an RMA to check the cpu out...he told me to send it back to the place that i bought it from but i already recycled the box and plastic package...i will give clubit.com a call just to check if they can replace it but i seriously doubt it without the entire package.
EDIT:...well, i called clubit.com and explained about not having the box to return the processor...the girl checked and said i could return it and i will be most likely charged a 15% re-stocking fee even though it is for an exchange....it's not definite but there is good probability that they will charge me....darn...wish i wasn't into re-cycling:D;)
Is there a difference between full load and idle temps for each core?
Also having a CPU-z register dump from one such chip would help me see if there may be other reasons for this unaccurate reading.

at stock speed, core #0 remains at 51C at idle or at load, when running wPrime 1024M bench (last about 5 minutes with 100% 4 cores loaded)
it appears core #1 and #2 will fluctuate in idle and will increase under wPrime load...they might be close to accurrate
core #3 reads higher than cores #1 and #2 but not as high as core #0...core #3 does increase under load.

EDIT:...just did a comparison with EIST and C1E turned on and then off...when i have it on, the two cores that are the same and close to what i believe is accurate temp are cores #1 and #2...NOW...with EIST and C1E turned off, the equal cores or accurate cores appear to switch to cores #2 and #3.
EDIT#2:...i am not so sure about what effect EIST and C1E has on the core temp readouts as far as what numbered cores read out to be close to accurate...i could not duplicate after several re-boots getting cores #2 and #3 to be the even number core temps; the ones that i would think are accurate.
it is plain to me at least core #0 is not reading correctly at all, load or idle!

ASUS have released a BIOS update for the P5E3 today (0808) I am going to flash it when I get home from work as this officially supports QX9650 and addresses some RAM issues.
I'll see if the readouts change with the updated BIOS.
It's blimin annoying that Intel are not interested in an RMA if their chip has a defective component (TDiode)

get this about what the Intel Tech Support guy said about worrying over temps...he said, basically, not to worry about the temp...when it gets to hot it will automatically signal the board to shut down...SO...DO NOT WORRY about temperatures...DO YOU BELIEVE THAT!...he was truly passing the buck by not wanting to RMA the processor....i got clubit.com to give me a return #...i will get charged a 15% restocking fee for not having all the packaging...it's going to cost me $200 by the time it is over.
i am still going to write intel a letter to complain about the handling of my claim and the cavalier attitude of the tech rep...he was courteous to me but in no way was he cooperative!...INTEL:down:

Well I did the BIOS flash and that made no difference really, except I now have multiplier adjustment of 0.5 instead of 1.0 and it made my system unstable at previous BIOS' settings, in the old BIOS my VDIMM was 1.86 but now I need 1.88 otherwise it crashes in Windows (still memtest stable though which is odd).
Intel sound like they enjoy passing the buck along, I reckon Intel should have a special tool/utility that will measure temperatures universally and not just on their own motherboards!

As the Intel guy said, the CPU has overheat protection built into it, and there are other ways to check the CPU temperature. May be it'll be less accurate, but this is your decision.
Intel's DTS reading isn't something they officially support anyway, so I don't think that they will give you an RMA for the CPU no matter what you do or who you write to.

put my Q6600 back in...off to the dirt track to spin it around a vista install.
XP runs very even on all four cores for wPrime 1024M bench....at idle, 3 cores are within +/- one degree and core #0 is within +4 degrees of the 3 other cores.
art, the intel warranty clearly states that the processor and heatsink will be free from defects in material and workmanship...as i explained to the tech rep...you buy a tv set...you take it home and set it up...then you find the remote is broken...you can walk up to the tv and power it on/off, change channels and so forth...but otherwise, it's defective...what will you do?...i know that i would take it back or call for a pick-up if it is a large unit...i don't think you will accept a tv that you put down $1200 USD for and not expect it to function fully.
i have a feeling my Q6600 is going to breeze right through vista 64 install.:up:

One of my ideas was that maybe each core had it's own Tjunction, but looking at the dump tells me that they all have a Tjunction Max of 105C.
I don't know why there is such a difference between cores.
Either a poor callibration of the DTS or maybe bad contact between the cores and the IHS (just shooting in the dark)

FYI, my Q6600 is working 'fine' on this DFI board...i am believing more now that the 9650 is defective...i could not install vista or it did install but it would quickly freeze in windows desktop...i am asking other posters in the DFI X38 thread if they have the 9650 installed and running vista either at stock speed or overclocked.
i'm at 3960 mhz with the Q6600
I'm having the same issue on an Abit 35 pro with 2 different 9650's. I am going to try them in a new board tomorrow and see if anything changes. BTW, my Q6600's temps are within 1-2 of each other on this board.

What does it mean if there is a bad calibration of the DTS?
would this be fixable with a BIOS update or a Core Temp Update?
Also another thing, why is there such a huge difference between core temp and ASUS probe?
ie ASUS Probe reports CPU @ 16C yet coretemp reports 31 31 52 52.
Is this because ASUS have a BIOS problem?

i'd think DTS is a core problem versus a bios problem.
I think so too.
Could be defective\poorly calibrated DTS.
Calibration is done at the Intel fab and BIOS updates can't fix this as its individual for every CPU.
are you beyond the return policy with your seller for defective hardware?...if so, then the only way to get an exchange is to call Intel tech support...i tried but i got the stone-wall treament from a guy who is in costa rica...he spoke very good english but he wasn't going to give an inch in allowing me an RMA.
i was able to return my 9650 to the online retailer since i was one day before the 30 day policy expired...shew!:)...should have a new one in 5-7 days....i am hoping it is not the same pack date.:shrug:

i'm very interested in the functionality around DTS and coretemp measurements. in the old days of e6400 about a year ago the DTS reported temps as an offset to TCC activation threshold.
has this changed for newer processors? is DTS now reporting the offset to Tjmax and not TCC activation anymore?
also, in the past it was impossible to read TCC activation threshold through any registers. reading your statement i get the feeling Tjmax can be read in an MSR - is this correct?

Thanks I've got an RMA number and they are collecting it on Wednesday, I am packaging it all up afterwork tomorrow. I'm not sure when I will get my replacement, but they had no problems with the reason I gave as it could be a potential for serious damage.
I'm not sure if it is related but during video encoding or wprime after 30 mins Core3 starts to go mad and I "lose" it's sensor (it goes blank) and the wprime thread laggs for core 3 by 3%! (after 30mins) and video encoding slows down. It's as if I "lose" a core.
Hopefully I will get a replacement within 2 weeks which as less then 5C spread between all 4 cores.

glad to hear that you got an easy resolution.
supershanks in the abit IX38 thread told me he got a bad E6600 or E6400...he thought the board was bad and therefore, he replaced that first...same problem...not until he took the cpu back and got a replacement did everything run smoothly.

It's all packaged up now, so I'm back on my old S478 P4 now.
I should get my replacement nextweek. (providing they are still in stock).
I included a brief resumé of the problem and a picture of coretemp and taskmanager just in case the "testers" just pop in the CPU and say "Oh it POSTS therefore nothing is wrong".
I'll have a dig through that thread to see how supershanks turned out before and after RMA.

i'm getting this sick feeling that intel is having quality control issues.
I hope not, but I sort of feel the same as our pack dates were the same (11/21) Perhaps the damage MIGHT have been caused in transit from the Intel Factory?
Or because 45nm process is still in it's early days...perhaps a few teething problems as they ramp up the process?

I will not be getting my replacement until next week, the fustrating thing is that the courier collected it on Wednesday but they have still not received it yet as it is at a sorting office. Hopefully they will receive it just before the weekend.

That sucks, perhaps you need a BIOS update or something as your CPU might be a binned QX9770 or QX9775. I'm hoping I don't have to wait that long.
It's really weird how a processor less than a few weeks later than the other one does not clock as well, back in the day it used to be the steppings which determined big differences. ie M0 vs D1 Northwoods or G0 vs B3 Core2Quad.

I have no idea why, I guess they just don't calibrate them, or the CPUs aren't reporting an absolute temperature anymore.
the idle temps at 4200 mhz with this coolit freezone elite are good but when i load the cores up with wPrime 1024M bench...it is on par with my TRUE...amazing, a $400 cooling system can't beat out the TRUE heatsink...hehehe
i can pump the mhz up to 4300 but it won't boot at 4400 mhz...it shuts down like an overtemp is occurring.

Well, there is definately something wrong on the chips end (e8400 DTS).
At stock I get 37/54. Remounted twice, not even a degree change.
Loaded @ stock, the core temps dont change. They stay 37/54.
When overclocked to 4ghz, at idle the cores are still 37/54 and loaded they reach 59/59.
It's actually quite bothersome. Oh well, what can you do?
I guess we just have to learn to ignore the temps we are so programmed to watch.
EDIT: This just in, Temps are 37/54 @ 4.2Ghz...... What a surprise!!!

It overclocks to 4 ghz stable at 1.375v w/vdroop mod (I assume that's an average overclock/vcore, right?)
My replacement CPU will be arriving next week as the e-tailer which is handelling my RMA have informed me that they have a delivery of stock tomorrow and as soon as it is all booked in they will dispatch my replacement QX9650 cpu.
I just hope the temperatures are correct this time!
The problem I had was that even at load the temps were wrong, I admit the gulf between the 2 cores was narrowed from 21C to just 12C but even so that was a large variation...and it did cause stability problems.
Fingers crossed my replacement will be fine.
I'll let you know what the packdate is to etc.

i had the 1st 9650 replaced and my 2nd 9650 is crap with overclocking beyond 4200 mhz...WAY to much heat from the cores and heat produced through the PWM circuit feeding it the power.

i was recently seeing idle coretemps like this (4ghz overclock):

core #1: 28C
core #2: 38C
core #3: 28C
after resetting to default bios settings to see if C1E and EIST would work properly, which it did not, i recalled my overclock settings using the F7 key in the IP35 Pro board...when i did that, see how the idle coretemp readings changed; where core number one changes its reading 10C higher and core number two decreases 10C:
core #0: 38C
core #1: 38C
core #2: 28C
core #3: 28C
do you have any knowledge why consistent power up and power downs for a 4ghz overclock, your program was reading like in the first situation, and since the change to default settings and then recalling my overclock settings, the latter core readings are now changed for those two cores?
I could very well be way off, but maybe the core IDs are different?
You have 4 physical cores, maybe the core which was "core #1" to the OS (as core temp bases it's reading on Windows affinity settings), after the reset the same physical core is being assigned as "core #2".
I'm not sure if this is possible so take this explanation with a grain of salt

Hey all i have a question. I just installed Core Temp on my Opteron 170 + DFI LP Ultra-D rig and my cpu temps are around 10C lower than compared to MbM5. Is Core Temp the real temp i should go by? I have my vcore at 1.4V and i'm wondering if i should go higher if my temps are this low.

There is some talk on the real temps threads about the sensors getting stuck on many quads. I tested it on my 9650 on phase and it said all mine were stuck, but I think that may be because I'm on phase and nothing reports my temps right, not even in the asus bios.

my new 9650 has 10C split betwen each set of cores at idle...when i bench them, the cores come within 2-4C, which means that the DTS sensors are cr*ap at the low end of the temp scale...they were inserted in there to really trigger throttling and then, i presume, board shutdown.
