We finally got the mobo. but Justin, sorry to make you disapponted: the board is 780i SLI, but the chipset is only a 680i plus a BR04!

the chip in the lower part is BR04. it is notthing but a bridge chip to enable PCIe Gen2 for the mobo. The bigger one is a 680i.

The only thing I can think is a late development working or a cheap solution as James mentioned on the previous post. It is not huge anyway, mod here and there, it's done, release, sell it, end.

all i can say is i don't care what chip it is as long it has active cooling!:up:

GOOD GOD that is a huge heatsink. While I dont mind having a nice HS for my motherboard, I prefer adding ones out of caution not neccessity. If nVidia is having that much trouble keeping their TDP under control the quality of the board itself surely cant be on the same level as Intel's.

"someone" told me that the only funtion of the BR04 is to enable the PCIe Gen2.

Well by the time you need the bandwidth that PCI-E 2.0 provides but 1.0 doesn't not many should be using one of those boards anymore. Point is, who cares about PCI-E 2.0 for anything else than e-peen?

Na look at the size of that brige chip compared to the NB itself, it can't be just a bridge chip. And who knows if it's even a bridge chip. Nvidia might have some other interface (think Hypertransport) so the 16x "PCI-E 2.0" aren't connected via the 16x 1.0 interface but something else.

Everyone's complaining about how poor this is yet nobody hast tested it yet. Wait till you see it's performance, it's likely a new 680i Stepping so overclocking will be better, and maybe performance.
And I dare to predict that PCI-E 2.0 performance won't be noticeably worse than on the X38. I mean Nvidia is the company to release the fist PCI-E 2.0 cards, and they wouldn't re-release the 680i if the perfromance sucked, better release nothing than if that were the case.

And in the end you should be happy that they didn't develop a new chipset when they didn't have to, because we, the consumers, would have paid the money that chip's development would have cost.

Heh, the only way Jen-Hsun would let Nvidia get bought out is if he were to run the combined company. Nv is just going to continue with this SLI stubborness and stupidity until it hurts them in the pocketbook. With a single slot 2900xt performing card that isn't a power/heat hog coming from AMD shortly, that may actually come to pass sooner than Nvidia wishes. CF is going to be the clear choice over SLI.

If thats the 780i, I'm going X38...

AMD would be a steal at $7.3 billion, since it is worth about $14-15billion and Nvidia would be a terrible buy, since it is worth only $3-4billion.

Anyways, just letting you know that's not how things work.

Market cap most certainly is how such things work. The value of a company as a going concern often has little relation to book value much less just a measure of its assets. The value of a company is based on what the market is willing to pay for an ownership interest in that company, i.e. the shares of that company's stock.

I had tons of nForce mobos and problems were only on Gigabyte GA-NF680-DQ6 ... with rest no problem, and i am using NForce Striker and eVGA till today and i am very happz with ... nForce is great chipset ...

New chipset silicon from NVIDIA probably wont appear now until the DDR3 variant due in Q1 I believe. It looks like you are stuck with old chipset tech if you want to use old RAM on NV.

That's one thread about the most problematic and picky of all 680i boards. I've seen more :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:ing over strikers then any of the rest.

Every place you really look the evga is the one endorsed as the best clocker, least problematic, and the one to buy.

One persons results are just one persons, scores of "CPU INIT" speak louder

after going through 4 EVGA 680i boards last month I finally broke down and bought an IP35 and am loving it..

the 680i is still sitting here in a sealed package, I dont think I can bear the guilt of selling it on ebay :p:

Well after owning the Abit 680i crap (twice burned) I am finally ultra stable with my quad at 400FSB and 3.6Ghz and it happened so easily. I am sure I can push it even further but I don't bother yet since the mosfets would need further cooling too. (SB, NB< watercooled now)

But everyone is saying 680i is :banana::banana::banana::banana:, if so then show me a better platform to run my monitor @ 2560x1600 with two overclocked 8800 GTxs (or ultras)? Which is this? The 680i and the EVGA is good at this task.

So for the time being THE FASTEST GAMING platform is this; simple as that.

Beggars cant be choosers. 680i is crap compared to Intel chipsets, but its the only one that you can run SLI on. So some of you are stuck with it. If nvidia allowed SLI on Intel boards I can assure you that they would perform on par with nvidia parts, if not better. No one in their right mind would buy a 680i board then.

Oh please Intel, go into the high-end graphics market, make up your own dual-card configuration, have it blow ATI and nVIDIA away, let it generate minimal heat, consume minimal power, outperform the competition, and give true 1+1 = 2 performance in dual-card configuration.

Let's wait it out and see how triple-SLI is.
To be honest, if manufactuers want to buy a huge heatsink on the northbridge, southbridge, and "SLI-bridge", as long as it is out of the way, and it works, I'm all for it.
I am all for chips not generating that much heat and consuming less power and performing well too, but, hey.

well all i can say is i cant wait for skulltrail to come out but the news on the 9800 is trouble some im gonna have to use my artifacting/fragmenting 7900gt till its released T-T. and i for one second that intel should make their own video cards and sound cards i mean a complete package that will use less power and would run and overclock like no other one can only dream about it. but thats imo take it with a grain of salt XD.

agreed! Foxconn is heading in a good direction with enthusiast level boards.. the Mars is pretty awesome and even their rev2 680i board is pretty sweet as well.
