regular plat with SLI version BIOS. I think these 2 are physically same. The main issue with MSI is you have to play memory setting a lot in order to get high Bclock.

raptord,
Could you be more specific about this memory settings? I also have one MSI X58 Platinum (non SLI one, but I could flash it to the SLI version).
Past 3.9GHz I really can't keep the system table, specially at 20x200. I can run stable 19x200 wich generates the same uncore/qpi/memory values (3200/3600/1600), but for 20x200 I could only run 1h prime stable then crashed and I had to use like +0.230 vcore and +0.220 vQPI generating high temps.
I'm also stable at 205x19, but 210x19 for instance is completely instable too. The only things I set manually for the memories is 1T 8-8-8-24 or 1T 9-9-9-25.
Ok then :) now I have come to my 24/7 setting.. Think this is quite good though.

9 hours prime95 stable.
Cooler: TRUE push
Anyone think I can get any further on my TRUE or have any sugesstions any of my other settings? New to Intel OCing.
If that's a 64bit OS, you need to check the 64 bit Mode box. That way LinX can use all your RAM. In you pic there, you're only using about 1.6GB even with the All button pressed because LinX is not in 64 bit mode.
EDIT: I see that box is greyed out for you. Are you running a 32bit OS? Why?
Just picked up a 3841A595 920 from Microcenter. I'll update this once I get my other parts in.
Yep 32bit OS, dont really know why, just do it =)
i got 3gb and 32 can use all, i see no need for 64bit?
I've tried it once , sure there were no problems really, just some programs that didnt work for it, but that was a while ago, those things have improved though, and Linx are using all mem i CAN use, there almost only one game i play, and thats Q3 and i dont know if that works in 64bit. maybe i should change? anyhow, i dont think that using 800mb more mem in linx will make my system unstable in the test?
cheers.
Same here, the most I encode is the odd .avi to VOB files using nero 7, I haven't paid attention to the exact comparison between the 3.9HT and 4.1 w/o, but I know that the cores never go past 70% load either way, and it's something I only do 1-4 times a month ! So why lower my oc, or stuff another 12c into the processor 24/7 for a feature I never use ?
If software changes to use it, or I start using apps that benefit from it, I know enough to turn down the oc 200 mhz, actualy the profile for just that is saved in the bios. 3.9HT and 4.15 without. Even with improved cooling I don't think my speeds will be raised...just temps lowered.
To each his own though, I'm happy with it as is :)
Maybe its a difference between linx 5.6 and 5.8 and I'm not sure what it means exactly or if its comparable system to system but your GFlops is lower than mine and time per pass is higher as well with my 920 at 20x180 (3600).
I just thought it was odd when I saw your SS.
EDIT: That may explain your low temps with linx at that clock speed, something may not be taking.

Given that the memory controller is on the i7 chips, are we comparing apples and oranges when we talk about vcore requirements without using similar memory parameters (amount of ram, speed, and timings)? Or is it only the cpu vtt value and not the vcore that should differ with different memory configurations? I have come across a post or two suggesting vcore requirements can be decreased by downclocking ram.
Just wondering, as I have two supposedly "good" batch number 920's, one requiring 1.418vcore and the other 1.4625vcore to run stable at 4.0GHz with HT on and turbo off. I run both with 6 gigs of ram at 1600mhz with 8-8-8-21 timings. Just curious what ram configuration folks who run 4GHz stable at 1.3ish vcore are using.
(I realize chips can vary considerably even within the same batch number- just curious if memory might explain some of the differences in vcore requirements. Or maybe I'm just envious of the folks with better chips:D).
Batch: 3841A522, 200*21 (HT off)
Vcore: +120mV
VTT: +100mV
Ambient was low-ish, prolly 10~15C, at 15~20C it hits 60~65C or so:cool:
Nice clock, since you're running prime95 I noticed that with ver 25.9 64bit version if you select custom you can allocate all the available memory now. I don't recall earlier versions being able to allocate all the ram so you may want to give it a shot, 25.8 might work as well but I never checked personally. If you enter too high a ram value you'll be bangin on the swap drive which will bring things to a crawl.

Hey guys,
First post for me. First system build also, and first time attempting to overclock. System setup:
i7 920 @ 3.6ghz (see below)
ASUS P6T V2
OCZ platinum 1600 @ 1440 7-7-7-18 1T timings
cm v8 cpu cooler
As you can see, I'm doing this on stock voltages. The temps seem to be my biggest limiting factor. They were idleing in the 39-43 range and load temps you can see below.
However, I just back to school this evening from my spring break and the ambient temps seem to be making a huge difference. It's quite cooler in this room, and i've been booted for about an hour and am idleing in the 35-37 range. Much more comfortable
http://i580.photobucket.com/albums/s.../currentOC.jpg
Any problems you guys see running 24/7 at this? Passed 2+ hours of prime95 capping at 76ish. Looking for some feedback being my first time!
I think you could have a good argument as long as we are not exactly certain which voltages influence which component. However if you look at my OC (see sig) I'm able to run RAM 100Mhz faster than the rated speed and still have my CPU at 4Ghz with vcore set at 1.35v in bios and 1.28v at load. Moreover at the moment I'm testing 1720Mhz RAM and 4.1Ghz with vcore 1.4v in bios and 1.33v at load.
In both cases QPI is set to 1.35v, CPU PLL at 1.88v and DRAM at 1.64v allmost all other settings at AUTO.
Is 1.42500V much for running a 920 at 4.2GHz with HT off and
I also require 1.42500V for running my 920 @ 4.0GHz with HT on?
I find it much if i compare it to the rest here...
What are youre thoughts on this?
See that you are using x64 and im not.. i have that instaleld now, and will do this test again 20 rounds all mem. strange thing though, that screen is Windows 7, and i tested this in vista to, wich gave me higher flops? same 32bit. Ah well, will get back to you, and 62c on a high end WC and 20c amb, only 1.36v? not so impossible.
cheers.
Can some one plz answear this question
when i run stock 920 133x20 CPU-Z reads 1.144 voltage
if i run 133x21 CPU-Z reads 1.225
now what exactly is considered stock voltage intel site shows 0.800-1.225
Thanks for the reply
The reason iam asking is at 1.184 and qpi voltage of 1.21 sometihng again cant remeber i can do 175x21. I havent had the chance to test alot. But for 2 hours its stable prime 95 blend. Now at 1.225 i can go all the way to 186x21. But the qpi volts need ot go to like 1.3 maybe less havent tried. Any Idea how safe 1.3 QPI is for long term usage.
Ok, now I have installed my x64 OS , and did a LinX again, all went well as supposed ;) that extra mem didnt do anything to stabilty, and i passed 20 rounds instead of 15 as before. Setting is as followed.

hehe hell yeah :) no problems so far, 64bit yeah ;)
almost 60flops, good enough. and pretty good cpu, though i need more likely 1.40 for HT ON, but who needs it? Those who say, why get a i7 if not HT ON? why? its integrated IMC, its Native Quad, performs a little better than wolfdale(dual) and its quad, i never had a quad before, and i like it, i dont need HT, come on, show me how much better (virtual) cores are in everyday usage and then hit me instead of smutter me. Im ok if if im wrong, then i can admit my defeat. but compare surfing benching and gaming, and then come back and show me the advantage with HT.
Cheerio ;)
here is mine, batch 3837B215, HT off.
im now at 4.2ghz with HT on stable 1.4v
Anyone with this batch # - 3846B109 DO? please post your oc results and general clocks. Just waiting for a few more parts before setting mine up. Thanks in advance.

Been searching around and this DO batch seems to be ok. Happy.
Im not 100% sure, but looks like the same batch that im waiting for.
But i see that many D0 need less volt then C0\CI need, anyway i hope i get one that is good.
And off course i will post here when the cpu and mobo come=)
See here for info on HT vs. no HT :)
What I use HT for most is crunching (BOINC WCG), there the speedup by HT is almost 40% over no HT
Of course, different people have different priorities (mostly gaming... ) but mine lies with crunching, so I run HT all the way.
Also any rendering app will profit hugely from using HT, even Winrar - Games, not so much. Maybe GTA4 or Supreme Commander, but that's about it really.
@glide1: Nice CPU, my 975 needs around the same Vcore to run 4Ghz, which means you should be good for 4,4-4,5Ghz stable on water ;)

SLBEJ but what about if its a A batch , are the B batches better ?
This opinion may vary, but it's probably too erly to tell at this moment... This similar discussion I think was had when the first 920 chips came out and there were some "is B better then A batch conversations/"
I have seen some fine examples of some good B batches but now I slowing seeing some good clocks on some later A batches...
Thanks for the help...
Well I went to MicroCenter and they just got a shipment and they had were S-spec: SLBCH :shakes: I have 2 guys there that will call me when they see them. So I plan on picking up a couple. I wanted a new i7-975, but it will not be out tell June now.. :(
I finnaly got my i7 system (for now C1 processor, still waiting for D0 to arrive at our little forgotten country:down:)
I have one question: About Turbo. If I turn turbo on CPU-z shows multiplayer 21, and EVGA utility shows 21 for core0, and all other have 20. Is that true, or did I mixed something up?
Ive couldn't resist to post at least one pic:

so...whats the safest max vcore can we pump these thing to do a bench. I heard 1.45v-1.55 is fine? Is that right :)
ill have some results of a intel batch # 3842A309 i7 920

On some OCs, I've found that doing only 5 passes of LinX didn't result with any error, but when I tried 10 passes, it errored out like 3/4 way into the test. So, you may want to test for 10 passes and see if it makes it. If it still does, then it's all good.
This screen shot was just for a comparison to a system eva2000 ran. I have run overnight prime 95 with no problems and also used it for the last 3 weeks including a few games and some divx - wmv 9 hd encoding that use all 4 cores while still using firefox ect. I am happy it's stable and was thinking of dropping the vcore down a step.

Who knows the batch 3847B019 I7 920 D0?
is good?
Mario, good job dude. You got a EVGA classified now?
yes, I just got it today. I busted my UD5. While re-doing my water loop (added 3 more fans to my rad and changed tubing) My cpu block felt on the cpu socket of the motherboard and bent a bunch of pins. so far the classified looks good. the only thing is that It needs a bit more vcore than my UD5 to achieve same clocks. need to learn this bios better. oh btw I ordered a xeon W3520, it should be here next week.
damn man, sorry to heard about the UD5. The classified looks like a really solid board indeed but i'm sure you were used to the UD5 BIOS. I'm sure once you get more familiar with this BIOS, you'll probably get better clocks out of it or as good as your UD5. THe Xeon should be nice. IT'll be nice if you do a comparison between both chips :)

can't find it in your database, and since i have the opportunity to exchance my C0 with it .... ?

Someone heard about this batch ?
just got a W3520 batch number 3850A823 packing date 04/15/09. so far 4.2 ghz with 1.25v. testing some more tonight. Still trying to figure out this classified board.
Hi,
I have a D0 that I just put in that is running stock. It is running 12 GB of Corsair Dominator RAM at stock (1066mHz) speed. The CPU batch is 3910A313 that I got from the Tustin, CA Frys. I am using a Gigabyte EX58-UD5.
Anyone have experience with this batch? How well do you think it will do with 12 GB of RAM?
No, I am not going for 4gHz or anything. I was hoping for anything over 1400mHz for the memory and 3gHz for the CPU. Is that doable with this stepping and 12GB of RAM?
I do not have time to tweak like crazy, I am just looking for a set and forget setting. Not looking to max out my stuff all all.

I'll have to get everything set up and test it out this weekend in my Classified 760. I need to try out my new beast of a power supply Enermax Galaxy EVO 1250W as well that I got earlier this week.
ey mario with all these Xeons and i7 chips you be getting your hands on ;), you should start crunching. Or are you already? You got a great team to crunch for here dude
